Have you noticed how Desantis will never take responsibility and always tries to place it on others? I worry for our children, teachers and all who work for the schools.

Coronavirus & School: Florida Teachers Union Sues to Stop School Openings amid Virus Surge | National Review

In the suit, filed in circuit court in Miami-Dade county, the Florida Education Association accuses the governor and several other defendants, including state education commissioner Richard Corcoran, the state Education Department and the State Board of Education, of violating a state constitutional mandate to keep public schools “safe and secure”
......
“The governor needs to accept the reality of the situation here in Florida, where the virus is surging out of control,” Ingram added.
......
DeSantis had recommended that all Florida schools reopen at full capacity next month, saying that if schools remained closed, parents would be unable to return to work. The governor has begun to walk back the July 6th order in recent days, saying on Monday that the mandate wasn’t his idea.

“I didn’t give any executive order, that was the Department of Education,” DeSantis said.

Currently, 39 hospitals have asked the state of Florida for help with nurses, according to an email to CNN from the Florida State Emergency Operations Center.

Jackson Health System in Miami has asked the state for an additional 275 medical staff, according to Jennifer Piedra, communications and outreach director at the health system. These medical professionals include 50 respiratory therapists, 100 nursing assistants and 125 nurses.

Meanwhile, the Covid-19 positivity rate at the Jackson Health System was a staggering 38% Sunday, the latest metric available, Piedra said. This rate includes all tests processed at the emergency department and tests conducted on inpatients and employees.

In the past 10 days, 146 employees, including 49 nurses, have tested positive for Covid-19, per Piedra. This equates to 1.1% of the total workforce.

I don’t give a hoot who gave the order, the school system needs an overhaul anyway. What better time than now?! DeSantis could be the hero like he wants to be. Step up and lead the way!

When I volunteered at the school years ago, I couldn’t believe how much of the day was spent on managing kids behavior, which was the parents job. If you’re kid is a holy terror, the learning environment isn’t going to matter. JMO

We have had e-learning in FL for years and it will be just fine for a standard learner. An online class is actually required for graduation here!

Learners who need services, we definitely need to come up with a safe plan. (For the record, I had a kid on each end of the spectrum, one very advanced and one with learning disabilities.)

Contract issues are going to be very interesting this year for school districts. When I taught I had a 212 day contract. Normal contracts are 184 days. 7 hours and 10 minutes.

The districts can't afford to have people on contracts who are not working. Especially now. Or filing for unemployment benefits?

What a mess.

Florida sees record-high coronavirus hospitalizations Tuesday

Florida saw a record-high number of hospitalizations from coronavirus on Tuesday, adding 518 admissions, according to data from the Florida Department of Health.

On Tuesday 136 deaths from the virus was announced, bringing the total number of people statewide who have died from coronavirus up to 5,319. Florida’s coronavirus death rate is higher than any other state, including Texas, which has about 25 percent more people, according to the Associated Press.

The Tampa Bay area added more than 1,000 new cases, with Pinellas County seeing the most new deaths and Hillsborough County seeing the most new cases.

The number of positive cases rose by 9,440, bringing the total number of infections since March to 369,834. The positivity rate, or the percentage of total tests coming back positive, for the day was about 14 percent.

Florida’s weekly death average has continued to rise over the past 10 days, hitting the highest it’s been at any point since the start of the pandemic. On Tuesday it hovered at about 115 people dead per day.

A public health employee predicted Florida's coronavirus catastrophe — then she was fired: 'This is everything I was trying to warn people about'

It was April 26, a warm spring Sunday in Tallahassee, Fla., and she was just finishing work at the Florida Department of Health, where she was managing the state’s much-praised coronavirus dashboard, which she had also created.

“I feel sick,” the 30-year-old doctoral student continued.

The exchange marked the beginning of an exceptionally turbulent period for Jones, who was demonized by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as a rogue employee while also being celebrated by his detractors as a brave truth teller willing to stand up to political power.

In a whistleblower complaint Jones filed last Thursday with the Florida Commission on Human Relations, her attorneys alleged that she was fired by the state’s Department of Health for “refusing to publish misleading health data.”

I highly doubt HE told anyone to not hold the convention. More like THEY told him not to hold it. Someone must have finally got thru his thick head that there’s a real virus out there killing people. Duh.
You bet that’s what happened! Even though he claims otherwise.

ETA: Asked later why he is canceling the convention, Trump said “I would just say safety. Just safety. I could see the media saying ‘oh this is very unsafe.’"

I was just on video webinar and one of the guys I know works for the our county health dept. As an aside (unrelated to the meeting) he mentioned that for every positive Covid-19 test he gets, he has to reach out to that person. He must document how are they are doing, what their symptoms are, what meds they're taking, etc.

He said it was very surprising how many positive people had 1) no symptoms, 2) a few symptoms, 3) had enough symptoms that they felt awful and 4) the ones hospitalized. He actually stated "don't let some crackhead tell you it is a hoax." He went on to speak to how people are taking too many risks by going to bars, restaurants, shopping, etc. Then he apologized for being so passionate.

We were all very appreciative of his comments and told him so. Poor guy looked like he'd lost 50lb and his hair turned gray. I can't quote his name obviously so take this as paraphrased and as my opinion!!
