Florida’s upward trend in coronavirus cases continues with 1,371 new reported infections

On Wednesday, Florida’s numbers reflected that upward trend in infections. The state reported 1,371 new cases of the coronavirus Wednesday, including 36 deaths attributed to the virus. The new numbers bring the state’s total to 67,371 since the pandemic first hit Florida in March, and brings the new death toll to 2,801.

My youngest has been given 10 hours a week and cannot even get on the website to claim her 1o hours. The one week her boss was off, they gave her 40 hours. She still can't claim that. The federal checks are coming regularly. Now she is concerned they'll shut everything off once they figure out the hours are not accurate.

Unemployment claims continue to rise in Florida and beyond

In Florida, another 110,520 filed claims for unemployment assistance last week. Through Tuesday of this week, the state Department of Economic Opportunity said more than 1.9 million people had applied for unemployment assistance.

More recently, the state instituted a “virtual room” that limits the number of applicants allowed on the unemployment claims website at any one time.

@PayrollNerd here is a crazy UI story. This guy was doing his claim each week, he never recieved the UI Debit card. He tries and tries to reach UI, for weeks.

His card was stolen. From his mailbox.

He talked to a claim rep, who told him. "Oh, everything is fine with your claim, you are receiving payments, click"!!!! What?! They didn't even let him explain the problem!

What a mess!

I hear you about claiming earnings, it is scary to even think about messing it up. She should just do continuous filing, reporting wages each week, rather than a re open.

I think people bailed if they could. I wouldn’t want to be stuck somewhere cold and dreary while forced to be isolated. I have to wonder if leaving the perceived safety of a warm climate, and going to a cooler climate, is scary to the snowbird population.
Why wouldn’t you feel safer just staying one place and not traveling? I would want to stay wherever my family was versus going to a vacation home for a few months.
I hate the heat, humidity and mosquitoes.

Well, for the snowbirds, it is the snow/ice storms that they cannot navigate. They can no longer shovel snow, walk on ice, or drive in it either. If they need access to healthcare or even basics (food, water, gas, heat, etc) they can't get out to get them. I do think there is a myth that C-19 isn't as prevalent in hot climates.

Driving in the rain is about the worst thing here or evacuating during a storm. Mosquitoes are a pain for sure but they can be managed with spraying. I just bought spray for the lawn to help with mosquitoes and ants. Now if the rain would flippin' quit, I could get out there with the hose and spray!

oh what did you buy? I need to do that - my lanai is screened so they aren't a problem but when I am in the yard in the evenings (the only time you can do yard work without suffocating IMO) it's terrible - I'd love to know what you are using. our rains have been relentless.

This is what I ordered off Amazon. It has good reviews. I have 1/4 acre which is 10,000 square feet. I ordered 2 bottles. I hope it works well because it has rained for nearly 2 weeks straight.

Florida reports highest single-day total of coronavirus cases

MIAMI — Florida’s Department of Health on Thursday morning confirmed 1,698 additional cases of COVID-19, the highest reported in a single day since the pandemic began. The state now has a total of 69,069 confirmed cases.

There were also 47 new deaths announced, raising the statewide toll to 2,848.

And Florida is one of 19 states that have seen a rise in new cases over the past week compared to the previous week, CNN reported early Thursday after analyzing Johns Hopkins University’s COVID-19 dashboard.

The health department says it does not “have a figure” to reflect the number of people currently hospitalized and only provides the total number of hospitalizations in its statewide and county-level data. On Thursday, 226 hospitalizations were added, raising the statewide total count to 11,571.

Gov. DeSantis announces plan for reopening Florida schools at 'full capacity'

One of the more disturbing (MOO) highlights from the article:

“We want schools fully open in the fall because there is no better way to educate our kids than have that great teacher in front of that child,” Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran said at the press conference. "We also know that they are not at a low risk -- they are at an extremely low risk, not only of contracting (COVID-19), but even spreading it."

I had to take a break from the covid thread...thank you all for the updates.

We’re on a rise here...now schools will open in August. It’s like this virus has been put to the back as everything is reopening.

Looks like we may finally get a break from those horrid thunderstorms today, yay!!

So do he and his advisors think only children are inside that school building? Did he forget the part that staff are adults??? Holy Sickness Batman!

Second virus wave emerging in US as infections top two million

Experts see evidence of a second wave building in Arizona, Texas, Florida and California.

Dr Daniel Lucey, a fellow at the Infectious Diseases Society of America, said the US has been bracing itself for another "high tide" like the one that engulfed New York City.

Today is a low tide, but "the waves are always coming in", he said.

This is sad that they feel the only solution is to quit the SWAT team. All that training and knowledge is a literal brain drain that leaves the rest of the team members at risk. I’m not blaming them, just pointing out the scariness of the situation.

10 Florida SWAT officers quit unit over ‘political climate’: report

In a letter dated Tuesday, the officers in Hallandale Beach, Broward County, complained of being “minimally equipped, under trained and often times restrained” in performing their duties, Miami FOX station WSVN-TV reported.

The officers – who were leaving the SWAT unit but not resigning from the force -- wrote that they were concerned that city officials were “placing the safety of dogs over the safety of team members.”

Not sure how they’ll enforce this...

More Florida theme parks reopening, but tourists from these 3 states will have to quarantine before visiting

However, those plans may need to be put on pause if you’re coming from New York, New Jersey or Connecticut.

Florida’s Executive Order 20-82, which was signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis on March 24, is still in effect — and mandates that travelers from the tri-state area undergo a 14-day self-quarantine.

Despite the theme parks reopening, out-of-state guests still need to follow Florida's required protocols, which means agreeing to the two-week self-quarantine at your own expense.

There isn't any real solution here. I taught school for many years. The only real solution is that if educators feel like they can't take the risk of teaching, to quit and take retirement or find another job.

Sorry if it sounds callous. I have been going to work every day since this started. I am not home doing "tele work". I see people, talk to them, they give me items, which I have to handle. I have friends who have been safely at home since mid March. And they recoil at the thought of going back to work.

Just the way it is.

Florida sees deaths from coronavirus at long-term care facilities break 1,500

The new coronavirus is linked to 1,502 deaths among residents of nursing homes and assisted-living facilities in Florida, a new state report shows. It’s an increase of 145 deaths in one week.

But the weekly death rate continues to slow. It was a 10.7% increase last week, down from 14.1% from May 29 to June 5. Also, 10 employees of these facilities have died since the outbreak began in March, records show.

Overall, Florida has reported 3,016 confirmed deaths from coronavirus-related illness — so those involving residents and staff at nursing homes and assisted-living facilities account for about 50.1% of those fatalities.

Another report shows at least 10,761 people at the facilities have tested positive for infections so far. That’s about 14.6% of the state’s 73,552 cases as of Saturday.

The data shows 302 of Florida’s long-term care facilities have reported at least one COVID-19 death so far; 23 more facilities have had deaths since a week ago.
