We call it a fuddle, but I think there are regionally different words for it here too in the UK as sometimes people look at me blankly (my family is from Yorkshire and Cornwall)
*looks at Elliefant blankly* :D

It's not a thing we do where I am. But I love the description of the big picnic in a Painted House where Luke describes so many versions of potato salads, ice cream coolers and chicken.

Last summer I remember there were actually info bulletins on tv here about how to eat bbq safely (use your own cutlery, dont pass food around..)

It is funny, food and culture...no offense to you British folks...one time I wanted to make a special dinner for a dear friend from UK, she thought all American food was too "Spicy". So, I start looking at British recipes..."No, that sounds awful, no, no..."...I ended up making a quiche, that seemed to be okay.

It is seriously 20 degrees below zero here today! Soup, ASAP! And a bit of peach whiskey in my tea tonight, for medicinal purposes.

:D I made quiche on Saturday. I dont like them much as I would prefer a good spicy chilli any day, but Mr HKP loved it. I did like the fennel and avocado salad I made on the side tho.

Eating too much stodge here tho generally, I need to snap us out of it.

I need to get out more
I didn't even know there was peach whiskey
But now that I do...:)

Now, shall we discuss my favorite "Salted Caramel" whiskey? You do need to get out more. Or rather, stay in more. Our liquor cabinet has grown exponentially during this time...for medicinal purposes only, of course. We can't go out anymore, so "Date Night" has to be extra special now at home.

That's going on my list too!:)

One of the things that DH and I miss most about not dining out frequently (now that we can) is our favorite Mexican restaurant, Mexican Village in Utica (the original Mexican Village is in Mexican town in Detroit). There are other Mexican restaurants around, but most are not anywhere near as authentic as Mexican Village. It's too far to drive for takeout or we would have added MV to our weekly carryout rotation. The restaurant has two main dining rooms, a small bar area, and a foyer/lounge where patrons wait to be seated. When the weather is nice, there are a few tables/chairs on the outdoor patio. The place is always crowded, and wait time can be close to an hour. They generally only take reservations for large gatherings, and we don't know how the restaurant is handling dining during the pandemic. Hopefully, we will be able to go to Mexican Village sometime in the spring. In the meantime, we are having a large nacho for dinner tonight. Corn tortilla chips layered in a baking dish with ground round, black beans, taco seasoning packet, scallions, chopped tomatoes, black olives, Mexican mix shredded cheese, guacamole and sour cream. I'll pretend that I'm sipping a gigantic Margarita, while DH has a Corona :)

This weekend is "Chinese New Year". We are planning on Chinese take-out. Our favorite place is Yat-Sun. The owner's mother wrote a book about her life as a Chinese immigrant to Montana.

I saw this cute Youtube about a teacher hired from the Philippines- she was from Manila, so not used to any wide open spaces...you all might enjoy it too:

I'm guessing that most of us won't be attending or hosting Super Bowl parties tomorrow, but are you planning any special menu for game day? DH and I are having Nino's Seven-Layer (Mexican) dip with tortilla chips and Naan pizzas with grape tomatoes, marinated artichokes, black olives, fresh mozzarella, and prosciutto. No dessert on the menu yet, but if we want something sweet, DH can always run out to Kroger for their Private Selection ice cream or cheesecake :)

a new COVID low- I forgot about the Superbowl completely this year and did not watch the commercials on Youtube either

"Polar Vortex" is coming...I shopped yesterday. I gotta tell you guys, I am getting so over cooking and eating at home all of the time.

never liked cooking....maybe once a year(!) get excited about a recipe and make an effort. Now it keeps snowing, so not only have to cook, but have to plan ahead of each storm. Did a lot of shoveling and xc skiing, so had an appetite for awhile, but am now also tired of eating! .... and, sadly, am also tired of my COVID goto snack, cheese popcorn.

Valentine's weekend, is anyone doing anything? It's not really my thing but Mr HKP usually buys me roses so I thought I should go to some trouble for him.

Our fishermen have been hard hit during the pandemic due to the restaurant industry being largely closed. In areas such as Cornwall, its their primary means of income so they have had to adapt by selling their catch on line. I've ordered some crabs and shellfish from one of them, expecting a delivery from FedEx today. I'm going to set out a fruits de la mer type thing, with lemon mayo, soda bread etc. Prosecco and candles to crank up the romance!

This is the link, in case anyone wants to have a look

We've had several tv programmes here about Cornish fishing during the pandemic and it's an area we know well, so I think Mr HKP is going to appreciate it (no pressure FedEx!)

ETA FedEx just delivered :)

Sounds good @HongKongPhooey. Super nice spread.

I have all of the ingredients to make white chocolate chip cookies. My husband loves them.

This sounds like a very special dinner for your special someone :) We learned many years ago that dining out on Valentine's Day is anything but a romantic, quiet dinner for two. Most nice restaurants offer a limited menu and strive to turn tables around in 75-90 minutes. Service is usually very poor: Waitstaff are under pressure to get people in and out as quickly as possible. The complimentary long stem rose that ladies receive hardly makes up for the rushed dinner. Given the Covid restrictions for 25% dining capacity, Valentine's Day will be challenging this year.

DH will grill beef tenderloins that we'll have with baked potatoes and asparagus. Nice bottle of red wine. I've been meaning to bake oatmeal bars (with dried cherries and walnuts) for a couple of weeks and will do that today or tomorrow. DH usually gets me roses - yellow, if he can find them (I had yellow roses in my bridal bouquet). We look forward to our dinner out on Monday. Major snow event expected Tuesday. I'm wending my way through the March issue of Food Network Magazine that arrived earlier this week. There's a feature about the best Irish pubs around the country, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Detroit's The Old Shillelagh feted as Most Vegan-Friendly. "Pubs aren't typically known for their vegan options, but this bar has a full plant-based menu that includes Reubens and corned beef sandwiches made with jackfruit "meat" and vegan cheese. There's also a vegan take on shepherd's pie made with plant-based beef." The Old Shillelagh | Downtown Detroit's Irish Pub

Could you share the recipe for the oatmeal bars? They sound good!

Hope the snowstorm doesn't bring power outages.

Thanks for the link! They have a lot of good looking seafood and recipes on there. I doubt I can order from them, though...

I love oatmeal bars. This is the (easy) recipe I use. For the preserves I get organic 100% fruit preserves with no added sugar. Sometimes I used mixed berry, blueberry, raspberry or another variety rather than strawberry.
