What makes Detroit-style pizza so special (detroitnews.com)

Here in the Motor City, we’re well-versed in what “Detroit-style pizza” is, where it originated and why its crispy square crust is so craveable.

The gospel of Motown's square slices — made famous by names like Buddy's, Cloverleaf, Jet's, Loui's, Shield's and others — has been spreading for a few years, with Detroit-style pizzerias opening outside of Michigan in New York, Pennsylvania and Denver. Some people even expressly give a nod to our city in their name, like Via 313 Pizzeria in Austin, Texas, and Motown Square Pizza in Washington, D.C. ...
Detroit-style pizza has become very popular in the area where I live. Some is really good, some is just so-so.

A new pizza place has been advertising that they are opening soon, and they are going to be offering four styles of pizza. Chicago style, tavern style, Detroit style, and school style pizza. All are supposed to be authentic recipes.

I’m a little skeptical that one little mom & pop restaurant can really make four styles of pizza successfully. But I’m willing to give it a try. I actually signed up to be a volunteer pizza tester for their employee training week which is next week.

We had takeout from P.F. Chang's last night, and it seems that Chinese is no longer friendly to me. I had horrible heartburn from the sweet/spicy dip for our crab wantons and my crispy honey chicken (fried). My digestive system has definitely become very sensitive in recent years, and I am going to have to be very careful about my food choices. I had leftover brown rice with a runny egg for breakfast, and tonight we are having Orange Roughy with broccoli.

Watch Food Network's Jeff Mauro make Detroit-Style pizza on The Kitchen.

Detroit-Style Pepperoni Pizza Recipe | Jeff Mauro | Food Network

I made pizza the other night. My husband bought this "cookie sheet" when I told him to get one the other day, I was thinking a regular one, he brought home this one.

https://www.costco.com/the-rock-reversible-grillgriddle.product.100638198.html

I was going to take it back, but I have used it several times, I really like the grill on one side. Anyway, I made the pizza on it, and the crust was perfect. Well done, and a bit crunchy. I hate under cooked pizza.

Normally, I use this dish.

Superstone® Deep Dish Pizza/Pie Baker

But my husband doesn't like deep dish pizza.

The steel company from which DH retired in December supplies steel to the company that makes Detroit-Style Pizza pans for Jet's Pizza. We think it's the best pizza around. We don't always get Detroit-Style, but all Jet's pizzas are fabulous. Our favorite is a veggie pizza: The vegetables are always fresh and crispy. Awesome! Jet's Detroit-Style 101 | Jet's Pizza

I have a round pizza pan with holes in it. I spray it with cooking spray, then sprinkle cornmeal on it. Then lay my rolled out pizza crust on it. I cannot stand doughy crust either.

I agree about Jets! Their 8 corner pizza is fantastic!

I would love to obtain one of their pans.

The magical day has finally arrived! DH and I are going out to dinner tonight to celebrate his retirement :) No weather issues to hinder us - it's sunny and a balmy 62* in metro Detroit.

Here's hoping that it is a wonderful dinner to remember. We want all the gory...er...gooey details later please. I am still mostly dining out vicariously during this time of pestilence.

Thank you! I will definitely share the details. Indoor dining in Michigan has now increased to 50% capacity with 11:00 curfew, but I don't think we will be going out to dinner more often just because we can. We will carefully plan dining-out ventures after we have had both of our Pfizer injections on March 24 & 25 and following the 2-week immunity phase. We definitely look forward to dinner at Mexican Village where we have not been since late 2019.

Yesterday’s Sunday dinner for 1 was yummy! The food pick up gave me cornbread stuffed pork chops. It was one of those fresh dishes the grocery store preps, not a freezer section meal. Although, it was frozen when they gave it to me. I’m sure to keep it safe for transport.

I was given lots of red potatoes and carrots so I roasted a pan of those. Nestle cookie dough was $2.49 at Publix. So I bought a package but only baked half of them. A well rounded meal that was very tasty. Tonight is leftovers.

Websleuths has been running very slowly the past couple of days, and I was reluctant to start writing a review of our dinner date and have the site freeze up on me. We enjoyed our much-needed evening out but were unimpressed with the food at Andiamo in Bloomfield Township. The restaurant is classy and elegant, service was friendly and capable, and there were some very nice touches like decanting our wine, grating fresh parmesan on salads/entrees, and offering freshly ground black pepper. When DH made the reservation (by phone), he was asked if we were celebrating a special occasion. He received a complimentary dessert (raspberry sorbet with chocolate sauce), but we also got a slice of New York Style Cheesecake to go and enjoyed it later in the evening.

We asked our waiter for recommendation on a shared appetizer, and he suggested the colossal shrimp, but DH was planning to order the seafood pasta dish, so we opted for the Jerusalem artichokes that were awesome. There were three large artichokes sauteed in olive oil and served with a lemony aioli and black sea salt. DH had two, and I had just one because I was going to order a chicken entree that included artichokes. Bread basket had several slices of crusty baguette and breadsticks that went well with our salads. I had a mini-Caesar salad - sans anchovies - with my dressing on the side. DH had the house salad that was drenched in vinaigrette: He wished that he had requested dressing on the side.

DH was disappointed with his seafood pasta that had two shrimps, two sea scallops, two mussels, and too much rubbery calamari, including tentacles that looked disgusting. The pasta sauce was nice but the dish in no way compares to a similar dish at Picano's. I ordered Chicken Olivia that is similar to Mamma Assunta that I enjoy at Picano's and have replicated at home. I didn't care for the presentation with two chicken breast halves on one said of an oval plate with penne pasta w/sauce and a medley of vegetables all glopped together on the other side of the plate. I would have preferred the vegetables on a separate plate, and I could have done without the pasta altogether. The chicken breasts in their lemon butter sauce were very good, but the veggie medley wasn't hot and was basically flavorless. The pasta sauce on the penne was awful. We both had leftovers for lunch yesterday as portions were more than ample.

Our waiter, Anthony, was a very nice looking young man with good energy and a pleasant personality. When I ordered my entree, Chicken Olivia, I was trying to be clever and funny by saying that I wanted the chicken dish that was named for one of the stars of Gone With the Wind (Olivia de Havilland) and one of the characters on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Olivia Benson). Anthony didn't know about either one of the Olivias but knew what I wanted because it's the only menu item with a person's name. We wondered what rock he lives under :D We decided not to ask Anthony if he knew the history of the restaurant site where he works. Andiamo occupies the building that used to be Machus Red Fox from which Jimmy Hoffa disappeared after having lunch on July 31, 1975. The rest, as they say, is history: Jimmy Hoffa was never seen or heard from again.

If any of you are low on food or trunk to stretch your supply, this is a great recipe

I guess I’m allowed to post it as I’ve seen a few other recipes and grocery lists.
Hopefully all of us will have freshly stocked stores soon. My next trip will be before 5a.m., I’ll go one morning when I wake early & feel like dealing with it.

I was contemplating what to make and decided my soup / rice / veggie mix was going to have to do. I used to buy those Lipton Rice Mixes years ago. But there’s too much in them we can’t have. So every time I throw this dish together, it’s different. Today, I diced the hard veggies and sautéed them in 1 tablespoon of vegan butter and 1 tablespoon of olive oil.

I used maybe 2 tablespoons of diced carrots, onion, garlic, cauliflower, celery. Once that had cooked maybe 15 minutes, I added two 32 oz cartons of vegetable broth. I use College Inn brand only. The other brands are nothing but carrot juice.

I brought that to a boil and added my soft veggies. About 1/4 cup each of zucchini, yellow squash, spinach and 1 Roma tomato, seeds removed and 1 spear of asparagus. I let that cook at a low boil for 20 minutes. Then I added 3/4 cup dry white rice. I cooked it until the rice was soft, maybe another 20 minutes. I added salt & pepper. Then added 1 can of drained and rinsed black beans.

I literally used whatever I can find in the fridge. But it’s tasty regardless. By tomorrow all the liquid will be absorbed and it’s a rice dish.

WS has been crazy slow and timing out all day.

Site has been wonky since Monday, and maybe even several days before that. Pages loading very slowly or not at all. Site feels like it is about to crash. Maybe it's due to high traffic on George Floyd trial forum.

Sounds good, and yet, sad. I hate it when it is a special occasion, and the food is a disappointment.

While "The Melting Pot" is a chain, we have always had a delicious meal there. Too much food, but I love fondue. The cheese fondue is delicious. And the chocolate fondue for dessert, served with fresh fruit and angel food cake is yummy!

I am sorry the experience wasn't all it could have been. Would you say that the artichokes were the best part of the meal? I am intrigued by those artichokes.
