So I decided after going to CVS, I’d pop over to Publix. Well, the vet office next to my Publix is on fire. We just got evacuated out of Publix. Stupid people in Publix just get in line to pay when the announcement came over the speaker. I’m like WTH? I’m out!!

Yikes! I hope no one (people or pets) were injured.

I hope so too! I was scared of smoke inhalation and fire retardant stuff hurting animals and humans.

The fire dept asked all shoppers and employees to evacuate due to the fire at the vet office. Something to that effect. Next to them is the Publix liquor store and the other side is the phone repair shop. Waaaayyy too many flammable things on top of the gas station!!!

Eek @PayrollNerd ! I hope there were no animals hurt! (or people, but they're not kept in cages so can evacuate themselves)

Looks like we both experienced "fire" situations yesterday. My sister called to tell me to watch Channel 7 news about a fire in a senior housing complex just a few miles from her. I had already seen the report on WDIV's 4:00PM news that was going to be updated from the scene at 5:00. She had driven past the apartment complex last week when she had a doctor's appointment in Algonac. The housing complex was a total loss, but no one was injured in the blaze.

We have a busy day on tap with his/her haircuts, a major Nino's trip that includes our outdoor holiday greens, and Thanksgiving paper goods at Party City. Enjoy your weekend!

I have a day off today! YAY!! It is nice to stop in here and say hello. I have been following all your posts and enjoying reading about your upcoming Thanksgiving food plans. Today I am making my order for pick up at Whole Foods in Ann Arbor. I am going to work in the office for the first time in over a year on Wednesday and pick up my order on the way home. Stay tuned, I will make a post with my final choices and menu. My sister is hosting and I am going to bring a bunch of food. She loves lots of food so I have to do my part, LOL.

Very productive day. Left for hair salon at 11:45. I asked our stylist to take off a couple of inches, so I have a nice chin-length bob. DH doesn't have much hair to speak of :D Nice selection of Thanksgiving plates and napkins at Party. Four fresh evergreen swags with red ornaments and big red bows for our outdoor lights, and a "drop-in" evergreen pot for the urn on our front porch. Groceries for dishes that can be made in advance. We were back home by 2:45. DH will likely made a quick trip to Nino's on Monday or Tuesday when he goes swimming.

My first stop today was the church for my Thanksgiving bag. They gave me an 18.8 lb turkey! I will cook it and debone it. Most will go in the freezer and will take months to use up.

The items that accompanied it were mostly cans and this bag, with what looks like mixes in it. I’ve never seen one of these before.

They also gave me a bag of regular groceries with some type of frozen beef ribs I’d never heard of either. I’ll grill them and try them tho.

Well, I decided to surprise my husband, by actually cooking. Lately, I have just let cooking slide. I bought a ham, cranberry cornbread stuffing, and other stuff for Thursday. It is in our fridge in the garage, in "hiding".

Cleaning the house today.

I will start prepping for Thanksgiving dinner by making cranberry sauce today. I planned a schedule and will make something each day so I don't get overly anxious or flustered when there's so much to do. We will make a joint trip to Nino's tomorrow afternoon for anything last minute and/or fresh. As much as I love Nino's, it's best to avoid the place on Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving  DH will stop at Meijer and Trader Joe's, too.

I've always made my own Cranberry Sauce. It's easy and delicious :)

1 12 oz. bag fresh cranberries
zest and juice of three or four oranges (or 1 cup orange juice)
1/2 cup sugar (brown or white)
1 cinnamon stick
2 star anise
4 whole cloves

Put cranberries and other ingredients in pot, bring to boil. Lower heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cranberries start to pop. Remove cinnamon stick, star anise, and whole cloves. Mash to desired consistency and let cool. Pour into serving bowl. cover tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate. Can be made several days in advance.

DH and I went to Nino's yesterday for the remainder of items that I need for Thanksgiving meal. Our list was short, and we were in the store for about a half hour. Not too busy and well-staffed. DH went to Trader Joe's after his swim hoping to pick up a pumpkin cheesecake. They were completely out of the dessert, so I asked my brother to bring a pumpkin pie that he'll probably get at Kroger. We also have a Bill Knapp's chocolate cake for those who don't like pumpkin-anything.

We will have a basement repair crew working here today. We had leaking walls during recent heavy rains and want to take care of the problem before it worsens. It's an unexpected expense, but we're prepared for household emergencies.

I plan to do some serious prepping today. I will prepare the turkey meatball mixture and let it sit in the fridge for an hour or so before roasting them. I buy Nino's wonderful prepared sage stuffing and will use some for the bread mixture in the turkey meatballs. I will add chopped walnuts and dried cherries to the remainder of the stuffing and put it in a baking dish so it's oven-ready on Thursday morning. Lastly, I'll make homemade turkey gravy. Tomorrow I will sautee pierogis, roast raw shrimp, and make cocktail sauce. I hope your holiday meal preparations are going well and that you will enjoy your day with family and friends. Be safe and well!

I’m starting my prep today too now that I’ve been to both produce pickups. I just realized I forgot milk and an onion. It’s times like this I wish I had 4 refrigerators! LOL!

Wegmans sells small servings of sliced roast turkey with a side of gravy in the prepared food section. Perfect for us…pre-covid we hosted a ton of dinners but we’re so just worn down right now and it’s the second Thanksgiving that will just be us (one kiddo is high-risk). Turkey was very reasonably priced - 3 scoops of potatoes was around $17, though. Wegmans now does curbside, at least near me.

Managed to only get 5 1/2 hours of sleep so I just got up and starting fixing food. My cooking assistant, Neeko is snoozing on the job. (Dog sitting again)

The rutabagas and cabbage are done. Lima beans are in the crockpot. Strawberries washed up. They are not in great shape but they’ll be fine for smoothies.

Next up is the collard greens. I found a few vegan based recipes that are done in the skillet with veg broth, onion, garlic and tomatoes. Collard greens strike me as something that will taste better the next day. I have never made them myself but I like them and so does my youngest.

I’ll roast the squash, zucchini, carrots and a few red potatoes since the other vegetables are done in water or veg broth.

My bird is still defrosting in the fridge. He is huge! I hope he is completely thawed by tomorrow morning.

So far I’ve made the cabbage, rutabaga, squash & zucchini, red potatoes & carrots and collard greens. Cleaned the kitchen, showered & dressed.

Once I get this bird out of the fridge in the morning, I can make pies. Maybe I’ll do the cold water soak tonight to hasten this bird along. I set my alarm for 6:00am. It says 4.5 hours unstuffed. I put carrots, celery, bay leaf and an orange inside. Not sure if that qualifies as stuffed per se. I gave a big meat thermometer so I should be good.

My oldest has her arm in a sling unexpectedly. She is coming up with her ingredients for a few dishes so I’ll fix that food too.

She is having a Friendsgiving on Friday night with her coworkers. Then a potluck next week. I will get the items made for her and then she won’t be overwhelmed.

She wants to make Butternut Squash Macaroni and Cheese. I’ve never heard of it so I will learn to make another new dish.

He lives with 3 cats! LOL! He is not near as furry as he was last time. He went to the groomer and got buzzed.

@PayrollNerd - here in the deep south we always say collards are better the second day.
