I stumbled into a great deal at Whole Foods a couple of days ago. I seldom shop there except for some ingredients that are difficult to find, but WF is a drop off location for Amazon returns so I went in to drop off a return.

They had a huge amount of their holiday dinner foods left, so they were on sale for 50%-60% or more. These were the prepared-in-store foods like dressing, sweet potato casseroles, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, appetizers of different types, desserts, too many sides and salads to even name.

I love WF prepared foods but seldom buy them unless they are on sale. My favorite is their vegetarian roast that is made of mushrooms and other vegetables, and I purchased two of those.

Amazon Prime members get an extra 10% off sale prices too. So I selected a cart full of delicious food for a total of $19.96 and we had a wonderful special meal.

This post is probably off topic for this thread but I wanted to share some good news. I will say that I have much more time to cook now.

After 20 years of working in healthcare I have left my job. It is a terribly stressful time to be working in clinics and I had just had enough of it. I took a job as an instructor for healthcare classes, and I work mostly from home, teaching remote classes.

My concern about switching jobs was that I have to go 90 days before my new health insurance kicks in, and I am on only one prescription medication but it is quite expensive.

When I went to the CVS to refill and without insurance it was crazy expensive. So I tried the pharmacy at our Kroger store, and the pharmacy tech helpfully informed me that if I didn’t have insurance I was eligible to use GoodRX for a discount. When she ran it through GoodRX the price for a 90 day supply was only $19.96, which was less than the insurance copay I had previously paid. Unbelievable. And for transferring a prescription they gave me a $50 credit for groceries.

So for anyone who is without insurance please check out GoodRX for a discount. I am very grateful to the Kroger pharmacy tech for mentioning it to me, as CVS did not.

Amazing! Your groceries and script were both $19.96? Hopefully, those will be lucky numbers for you in the coming year:)

I brought that exact roast with a few of their sides to the family Christmas. It was a big hit, even among the meat eaters! How cool that you got it at such a good price.

Congratulations on your retirement! Costco has a similar program, that my Mom was able to use until she was eligible for Medicare.

I am happy for you! Squee!

Congratulations on your retirement! I'm sure you have a wealth of wisdom and experience to impart to your students. Wishing you success in your new job.

What is everyone making for New Year’s Day dinner? I am trying a new recipe. I hear that black eyed peas bring good luck for the coming year. I can use all I can get, so here you go! Of note, black eyed peas were hard to find. I wanted dry peas in a bag. The stores I went to had plenty of canned. After no less than 5 stores, I found them.
We have a few really nice markets near by. Today I found everything I needed at the Westborn Market. They specialize in fancy foods, great meat and seafood counter and really nice produce. I came home with way more than what was on my list.

After learning about black-eyed peas and greens bringing good luck and money when eaten for New Year's, I found several recipes that combined the two. I cooked bacon, drained, and saved some of the drippings. Added some olive oil and sauteed shallots, then cooked kale until it was tender. Seasoned with salt, pepper, and freshly ground nutmeg. Added a can of drained black-eyed peas and chopped bacon. It was a simple and satisfying side dish.

DH and I are having beef tenderloins with baked potatoes, asparagus, and red wine tomorrow.

My peas are soaking even as I type.

Nino's didn't have dried black-eyed peas yesterday, so I got a can. I will try to make a dish with the peas and kale over the next few days. We're not crazy about collard greens, but we do like kale. IIRC, you shared the New Year's tradition on this thread last year :)

I'm sticking with tagine tomorrow. Everything arrived in my shopping delivery. Beef is marinating in Morrocan spices and it goes in with some random (to me) ingredients - pomegranate juice and dates. Pomegranate seeds go in the couscous on the side.

Not at all traditional, just something I used to make him years ago at new year so we're having a throwback.

ETA happy new year everyone. I really enjoy this thread!

I had a hard time finding them dried. I am sure the can will work out. My recipe says use either. I was just set on the dried.

Sounds delicious. I love pulling out recipes that I have not made in a while. Mr Pirate calls them “throwbacks” too!

My "throwbacks" are Chicken Divan, Beef Stroganoff, and Chicken Paprikash. Our favorite throwback is a can of Hormel Chili with a bag of Minute Rice. We enjoyed this sumptuous dinner many times when we were first married. I was teaching and taking classes while DH worked full time and finished his Master's. We didn't have time or energy to cook.

RX was $19.96 and I received a $50 grocery credit for transferring a prescription. Amazing.
