It must have cinnamon or five spice or something, it smells great, curry was brill too

I made my chili at lunch time and ate 2 bowls immediately. It really hit the spot! I haven't made the corn bread yet. I wait to bake until it's cooler at night or first thing in the morning. Since my youngest is also making chili (vegan version) and GF corn bread for herself and her boyfriend, I will be using regular flour. I get to eat it ALL! I don't have to share. LOL!!!

A little light reading to go with my lunch.

Yes, initially I did 23andMe with Health because I did not know who my father was. I matched to his brother and sister. On the health part, I carry the variant HLA-DQA1. Here's the disclaimer and some of the report titles which was helpful to us for allergy testing. I can eat gluten but neither of my girls can.

I have modified every single baking recipe to use GF flour. At one point, for 2 years, the youngest couldn't even have dairy or eggs. Cooking and baking has been a huge challenge but we've kinda gotten into a groove now, 10+ years later.

Thank you for sharing this information. 23 and Me is actually the testing kit that I've considered. There is an online special offer now, and I'm seriously thinking about ordering it.

One of my dad's sisters and her husband knew a French Canadien nun who researched family ancestry. My dad's ancestors came from Scotland, France, and Quebec. The ancestry document goes all the way back to France in 1600. As I mentioned previously, I am more interested in my health DNA than I am with my late ancestors.

So my youngest made her vegan chili with Gardien Ground Be’f crumbles which are made from soybeans. She said they’re so good that her boyfriend couldn’t tell the difference the first time he tasted them.

They are on my worst list! They were always the last candy left to eat from my trick or treat bag.

I liked Tootsie Roll Pops but thought the little rolls looked like puppy poops :D

I love them vicariously, through Luke in A Painted House (my favourite book) :p

Halloween may embody all things spooky, scary and supernatural, but that doesn’t stop it from also being one of the sweetest holidays of the year.

We’re talking serious sugar sales. Candy purchases, expectedly, jump sharply in the U.S. in the days surrounding Halloween. In 2021, the week with the most candy sales of all was the week of Oct. 25-31, beating holiday candy sales in December, and Valentine’s Day candy sales from February of this year.

The cost of candy is up 13% this year, but that’s not stopping U.S. shoppers from spending money on the holiday. According to a RetailMeNot survey, Halloween spending -- including decorations, candy and costumes -- is expected to rise 200% this year compared to 2021, with the average shopper saying they’re spending an average of $108.62...

From that list, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Snickers are my favorites :)

This afternoon 10 of us met up at Woodys River Roo on the water in Ellonton, FL. The band was fabulous. It wasn’t too hot out.

All the food looked amazing. I had the grouper sandwich which was big and delicious. The fries had some type of coating and seasonings on them. They were good but I’m not a big French fry person.

One friend bought my lunch because I picked her up from the hospital. I told her that wasn’t necessary! I was happy to help. Anyway, if you’re in the area, it’s a nice place to go. Not overpriced.

Why did Tootsie Rolls land on the worst list?!? Our soldiers used to hand them out because they didn’t melt!
I like the little vanilla tootsie rolls in the blue wrapper. (I’m weird lol)

I opened a tin of sweetened condensed milk the other night, thinking to make salad dressing with it. After a moment of trying to get it out of the tin and failing, I realised something. It was caramel. I checked the label. It said sweetened condensed milk. I checked the best before. It was a couple of years over, but that's generally fine.

Then I realised.

We've had a couple of colder, wetter summers in a row, but the one before that was awful. Bushfires the whole length of the east coast, creating their own weather. One day, the hottest place on earth was my town. It got to 48.9C. We didn't see blue sky for months, because the smoke was always, always there. And when we finally did get rain, the rain smelt like an ashtray.

Our drygoods are mostly stored on shelving that's set in our garage, with the wall into the living room removed and replaced with rolling doors, so we can access it. Our garage is right along the western side of the house. No insulation in there, because it's a garage.

It got hot enough two summers ago in my garage to turn a tin of sweetened condensed milk into dulce de leche just sitting on the shelf. No boiling necessary! Just an Australian summer + climate change.

So, now I've got an open can of caramel, which I cannot make into salad dressing. (I'm not THAT experimental!) I guess I'm making brownies again? I had a looksee on the interwebs, and it seems like I could do that peanut butter brownie recipe and just sub the peanut butter on top out for the caramel and it should work.

Haven't tasted them yet, they're still setting up in the fridge, but I'm happy with the look of them! First time I've got a completely glossy top, so I'm chuffed with that (even though that's just cosmetic.) :)

A picture, and a picture of the can, to show you, YES, IT IS CARAMEL. I MADE CARAMEL WITH THE BLACK SUMMER.

I made a really good dinner tonight, no pics sorry, but pulled pork, new potatoes and veg! I know most recipes have pulled pork in a sort of bbq type sauce, but I prefer mines with a gravy! So pork shoulder in the slow cooker, with gravy and sage, for 8 hours then shredded. Added new potatoes whole, and carrot and onion with 5 hours to go. And just had to steam some green veg to serve alongside. It was delicious ! Pork is really cheap here too, so a very economical meal, and 10/10 flavour and yumminess. Lots of leftovers too :)

I went to Publix because I didn't want to cook. I found these tiny little red potatoes. They will be great fried up as Rosemary Potatoes.

I did not get the ice cream gene but I want a waffle cone. So I bought this box of Keebler Waffle cones that was 70 cents cheaper than the Publix brand. I don't think that has ever happened. So I had to buy coffee ice cream to go in them. Not that anyone is going to watch me eat an empty waffle cone at home but I don't want to seem like I'm an idiot. LOL!!!

My oldest is coming home for a wedding Nov 4th. She will have to help me eat the ice cream. Then my youngest will have to come get the rest of the container. Otherwise, it will sit in there and get freezer burned before I finish it.

ETA: I also saw this box of mini Pillsbury pie crusts that you put in a cup cake pan! I thought they were really neat. What a time saver that would be for individual pies, even chicken pot pies or something like that.

I’ve never seen those mini pie crusts before but I will look for them! I like to make vegetable pot pies with leftover fresh produce, and it would be fun to make individual size pies.

I haven't seen those "nibbles' or the mini pie crusts. I like the idea of the mini pie crusts and may try using them to make mini pecan pies.
