I had to go to Publix too. When I got there about 8:00am all the handicap parking was full but I found a close spot thankfully. Everyone else had the same idea - go early. The self checkout line was long, all the registers had at least 3 people waiting. By the time I was done, an asst manager type person opened a register. No waiting - perfect blessing to start my day!
It
was
a
madhouse.

But, made it home with the items I needed. :)

Decided to run the crockpots today. Green beans with onion, peppercorns, kosher salt, minced garlic, parsley all in a vegetable broth. Lima beans with onion, minced garlic, kosher salt and pepper also in vegetable broth.

The rutabagas are one of my favorites. I will boil them. The spaghetti squash is one of kiddos favorite. We have carrots to roast too.

This evening I’ll make pies. 2 pumpkin. 1 chocolate cream.

The Romaine is going crazy in the garden and the spinach has some leaves ready too. So we may have salad for dinner tonight.

Got my last-minute food shopping completed, made the wild-rice side dish, made the cranberry sauce, and made dough for my son to use baking pie tomorrow. Since no one else was home, I had some wild rice for lunch and nobody needs to know I've been dipping into tomorrow's meal today. We're having pumpkin ravioli tonight that I picked up at the farmers' market this week.

Tis the season! Happy Thanksgiving to fellow USA'ers and everyone else too - thankful for this fun thread on WS.

I just finished the rutabagas and couldn’t resist having some!!! So very good.

I went to Costco on Monday. It was crazy busy even early in the day but the Costco employees were cheerful and efficient. Checkout lines moved very quickly.

Last Thanksgiving, I swore, no more cooking holiday meals. I do not have the strength any longer. I didn't listen to myself and I am cooking for Thursday. It is only the two of us for Thursday, and a friend who likes to come over on Friday because she likes the way I do turkey sandwiches. Tuesday I made the cranberry sauce and the cranberry orange relish. Today I had one errand that my friend drove me to, and a stop at Publix for pie. Today I made the mashed sweet potatoes, the dressing, and chopped some vegetables to start the turkey soup from the carcass on Friday. Microwaved mashed potatoes and a green veggie out of the freezer on Thursday. A nice 14 lb. turkey. Right now I am exhausted and my back hurts. Please, someone remind me no more holiday cooking until I move close to my daughter next year.

Last week at work we attended a presentation from an efficiency expert. He began his presentation saying we would learn efficiency tips and tricks that would save us time both at work and at home.

He explained that we would see the value in attending his presentation with his very first efficiency tip. In only two minutes we would learn how to save time every time we unloaded the dishwasher.

He asked if our silverware drawer was next to the dishwasher, or across the kitchen from the dishwasher. Quite a few people responded and said their dishwashers were on the opposite wall from the dishwasher. He then said, “Just think about how many trips you make walking across the kitchen from the dishwasher to the silverware drawer while unloading clean silverware from the dishwasher.”

He said he was going to teach us a tip that we would use from now on, every time we unloaded the dishwasher. Instead of walking back and forth with a few pieces of silverware at a time to unload the dishwasher, his tip was to take the silverware basket out of the dishwasher, carry it over to the silverware drawer, and unload the silverware from the basket rather than walking back and forth from dishwasher to silverware drawer.

I must be an efficiency genius because I have always carried the silverware basket over to the drawer to unload it :)
Like, duh!

I can save even more time: just pour it out on top of the little sorters and let someone with OCD put the utensils away properly.

My feet are toast! Still a little clean up to do but Kiddo is in there working on it. Tomorrow will be an easy day for us. Just the mashed potatoes to make because we like them fresh. We may make some kind of bread too. Maybe a pan of cornbread or bake off some frozen biscuits.

We roasted spaghetti squash, zucchini, multi color carrots, and cauliflower. It was a good clean out the fridge kinda food prep.

I took all the veggie trimmings, toilet paper tubes and cardboard to the compost bin.

I made the chocolate cream pie, zipped over to CVS and got my Covid shot, then came back and made 2 pumpkin pies. They are in the oven now.

I'll crash from my Tuesday steroid day here soon. I only slept from 1:30am-6:30am last night. The house smells wonderful. Kiddo already inhaled a plate of all the veggies we made.

I’ve been cooking a few things for Thanksgiving each day, for the last several days. Because I cannot hold up to doing it all in one day.
I really came close to ordering takeout from a local restaurant. Really close.
But decided to do it myself. At least one more time. I wanted to do it for my loved ones, because they really like it when I do it.

So a a few days ago I made cornbread dressing, and put in the freezer.
Then I made the cranberry sauce. I took the turkey breast and ham from the freezer Monday night, put in the fridge to thaw, and made the pumpkin and pecan pies.
I made Texas Trash (aka Chex Mix)…because my family loves it. I make it by the traditional method…. but with a lot of extra Worcestershire sauce! Hard to get too much of that.

Today' my sweet daughter in law came and helped with everything else. Prepping veggies for veggie tray, dip, making deviled eggs, and cheese ball. Oh and she made sausage balls.

We have all those snacks for football games after Thanksgiving lunch.
Anyway, it’s always way too much food. So we end up with leftovers for days. Oh well, so be it.

Blessings to all for a healthy and love filled Thanksgiving Day, and throughout the year.

Hey, I’m right there with ya. I think this is my last one doing all this cooking. Ya know, it’s not that I’m lazy.
Well, for one thing, I broke my wrist, so everything is essentially with one hand right now.
But it’s not just that. I think I’m honestly just plain downright tired of it. It’s old. It’s not fun anymore. I don’t enjoy it. It’s not the same as it used to be. At least I guess that’s what it is.

Love rutabagas! (“Swedes”, where I come from.)

This, exactly! I couldn't have said it better :) I will be 74 in January and no longer have the energy or stamina to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. I used to be a brilliant multi-tasker in the kitchen, but now I get very anxious if I try to do too many things at once. I stopped cooking a turkey with all the trimmings years ago, switched to somewhat easier Prime Rib for a few years, and eventually a store-bought spiral-sliced ham. DH and I always hosted our family Thanksgiving gatherings that included my mom, my two sisters, two brothers, niece and nephew. Mom passed in 2009 (at 87), and my youngest sister succumbed to multiple myeloma at 57 in 2014. Holidays aren't the same any more. We didn't gather for holidays or BBQs during Covid, and last year, I simply did not want to host another Thanksgiving or Christmas gathering. Our niece and her family met us at Picano's where we had a fabulous dinner with exceptional service. No one had to prep or cook, and there was no need for massive cleanup. Portions are always huge, so we all had leftovers from our various meals. We are looking forward to another wonderful dinner at Picano's today. Local Italian Restaurant – Troy, MI – Picanos Italian Grille

My best wishes to my foodie friends here at Websleuths for a safe and Happy Thanksgiving! You are all amazing, and I have learned so much about regional cooking and appreciate all of your clever kitchen tips.

Me too! I feel like I have ADHD these days when I'm trying to do multiple things. It's hard to focus. I mostly notice this when cooking a meal. I'm 5 years older than you are, and all the standing is hard on my body. Today it is just the two of us so it won't be a big production--just a good-sized Cornish hen and sides. We eat less food than we used to. We do have a small pecan pie to enjoy.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Kiddo & I had a nice quiet day. I worked in the garden a bit tying up the veggies that vine. Harvested Romaine for Cesar salad this week.

I took a nap then made mashed potatoes. Kiddo is reading a book. We ate around 4:00ish. Did not miss having meat at all.

The pies were so good. I only make pumpkin pie at the holidays. I should make it more often. I occasionally make chocolate cream pie during the year.

I’m grateful my girls help me cook for the holidays. I too am getting tired / fatigued with so much holiday food prep. Not that we don’t do it every week anyway. But usually not all in one day.

My oldest & her boyfriend took a spontaneous trip to New Orleans. They are going to this Bourbon restaurant tonight. I’m curious to hear how it went since she’s gluten free.

At lunch she found red beans, rice & sausage. Isn’t it funny how you make dishes like that when they’re kids and they won’t eat it? Then they grow up and think it’s great. LOL!

I ended up doing more than I meant to, and my back is unhappy from so much standing. The sides for the Cornish hen were sweet potato and apple with some brown sugar, a small dish of stuffing, green beans with garlic and tomatoes, and gravy. Now we're going to try the store-bought pecan pie. Only a small piece, with a little vanilla ice cream... I hope everyone has enjoyed their day and special foods.

Thanksgiving dinner was a group effort here from DD and myself. Turkey breast, glazed ham, dressing, giblet gravy, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, deviled eggs, rolls, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. It was all good. We have leftovers for tomorrow. DH had a turkey sandwich tonight and I’ll have a piece of pie soon.

hope you all had a great day!

Wish me luck. I'm heading to the grocery store on the day before Thanksgiving like some kind of amateur who doesn't know better.
Yesterday at 3pm, they let me out of work early. I wanted to go to Lidl for another pumpkin pie (yes I bought one last Sunday but ... I had already eaten it :( ). There were no (zero) pumpkin pies left... (all the others were in great supply: cherry, apple, apple crumb, pecan...). Depressed, I located a veg pizza for dinner and some frozen Indian entrees which I like a lot. Lo and behold a frozen pumpkin pie...I debated- bake this? go try another store? make my own pumpkin/gram cracker pie, without sugar which is actually healthier...turns out the Lidl pie was defrost and eat, so did not require baking (yes) and pretty tasty. So garlic rosemary potatoes and Indian food for Thanksgiving... would rather walk the dog than cook. And, yes, after a few people in the family die (!) the big dinner loses some appeal. DH now watching Youtube videos and planning to make corn bread stuffing tomorrow, with or without a turkey. (Also ever notice that the grocery store is supercrowded the Friday after Thanksgiving too? I blame it on people whose college age kids came home and ate everything and are still hungry the next few days too...)

there is a Costco near me that has (most of the year) an over large parking lot. During Nov/Dec every single space is full. Their gas is also less $ than anywhere else so every gas pump has a 15 car line ...I cannot imagine how insane the inside is.

That menu sounds basically similar to ours. I had a problem with my turkey breast though.
Instructions said, take turkey breast out of freezer 1-2 days to defrost. It’s only three pounds! I took it out Monday around noon, which was three days in advance , (72 hours)
Supposed to take 1 1/2 -2 hours to bake.
Yet in took over three hours time , closer to four. Ridiculous.
Needless to say, I am so done with turkey. :sigh:
So we’ve decided we’re tired of it anyway, so will do something different next year, Adios turkey!
Hope everyone had a wonderfull Thanksgiving!

Or maybe everyone is sick to death of turkey and dressing! I’m not kidding! I know its worse after you’ve spent several days cooking that mess, I can’t even taste it anymore, lol.

BTW: I do make our pumpkin pie sugar free. And it’s good but also way less carbs and guilt. Pecan pie , another story. But that’s what my son wanted, lol.
