Food and Recipes while under Coronavirus quarantine #8

I went to the produce pick up and the food pick up today. Kiddo was excited to have so many choices. She put together a big salad and even fried the vegan bacon from the last pick up.

Onions must be in season! My friend makes French Onion Soup so she’ll be getting a bunch of onions.

They gave us a paper on how to cook leeks. I can’t ever remember cooking with them. The premade things are tuna, which we don’t eat. I don’t think I can eat that type of chicken salad.

What are Sport Peppers anyway?! Banana bread is definitely on the menu this week. Potato Soup is perfect for this chilly weather. I love hard boiled eggs crumbled on cottage cheese.

Not a rice pudding fan but Kiddo is. Kiddo is baking us Grinch cookies now. Yum.

I love the flavor of leeks, used to get them in my veggie box when we subscribed to organic deliveries. Hated to clean them though, had Nipomo sand in each and every layer, lol.

Sport peppers are great on sandwiches and pizza.

I think sport peppers are most commonly used on Chicago style hot dogs and Chicago style Italian beef sandwiches.

That makes so much sense! I thought maybe it was an off brand or something lol

We are snowed in today, 9” so far and still snowing. It is rare for us to get this much snow all at once. My pup isn’t happy and it is a challenge to get him to go off the patio.

Staying home today and will be digging in the freezer to find dinner.
I knew as soon as I saw this post...

We got so much snow here in SW Ontario the past few days. Over 20 centimeters, about 9" here too!!

YES!! French Onion!!

Sport peppers can help you make Chicago Style Hot Dogs!! Get poppyseed buns and some good quality dogs. Mustard, bright green relish, diced/slivered onions. I use cucumber slices, some people use pickles. Some go w/tomatoes, I don't like them on there, but they're ok. Always want the sport peppers, have to sprinkle w/celery salt lightly over whole dog. Steam the bun but don't let it get like a mushy wet pillow. I've seen versions where they use just mustard, onion, & maybe relish with a pickle spear, I believe. (Seeing @IceIce9 already noted this)

Now I am craving a Chicago Style hot dog!

All the toppings but never ask for ketchup…..they might throw something at you, lol.

Did anybody ever have a Nicky's hot dog in Chicago? I'm pretty sure they just have slivered onion (maybe relish) and a pickle spear, checking. I can't get the menu for the one I used to go to. I can't remember if they had relish, but they were good.

Are Vienna beefs worth the price? They're so expensive.

IMO, YES!!! Get the Vienna beef. I am a mid-westerner and my husband is a Chicago southsider. Chicago dogs are one of my favorite things ever. Get the beef!

This is what a Chicago Style hot dog looks like. This is from Portillo’s but there are many places throughout Chicago to get a Chicago Stule dog.

This one has sliced tomatoes but more commonly the tomatoes are diced.

I've heard you can't get the "snap" on the dog unless you simmer in boiled water. I've used a portable indoor grill and I get snap. (Just noting.)

My dad used to simmer the Vienna Beef dogs in beer. It gave them amazing flavor and “snap.”

I don't think I've ever had anything resembling an American hot dog.

Probably the closest thing is a sausage sizzle, which is the height of Australian cuisine from the cheapest ingredients, to be found outside your local hardware store every weekend, and the best perk outside democracy of compulsory voting.

I want one of these sizzles, LOL. It's a sausage on a bun, right? I was reading how some politician got into hot water for eating it instead on-- bread!! LOL I can't understand why, I see images with the sausage on bread, why not bread??

(CORRECTION: Seeing this politician ate his sammy from the side/sideways, and this was the problem-- not the bread.)

It is a plain supermarket or butcher thin sausage, on a folded slice of cheap white supermarket bread, spread with margarine, sausage cooked to a char, optional onions also cooked to a char, with tomato sauce.

Generally, sausage sizzles are run by scouts or guides, Rotary Club, Lions Club, local kids or adults sports teams, other charities. A $2 bit of greasy heaven, eaten from a cheap paper napkin with your hands.

And, as I said, it's one of the best perks of voting. All our voting happens on a Saturday, and polling centres tend to be set up in schools. So it's a great opportunity for the school to raise a bit of money, say, to send the kids to Year 6 camp.

Okay, so the bread isn't a problem at all, the bread's fine. I'm looking it up why they were nagging at this politician. LOL, ok, he ate it from the side, like sideways. I guess this was a problem for some. (This reminds me a little of Americans attacking each other over eating pizza with a knife and fork, LOL)

I remember back when there was a huge debate over which food could be eaten with fingers rather than silverware. I think it started when someone prominent (a president maybe?) was pictured eating something with his fingers at a state dinner or something.

I start eating pizza with a fork and knife. Then once it’s close to the crust, I’ll pick it up. There’s very few places that have tasty crust. But Michelangelo’s Pizza here is very good. I east every bite. Their pieces of pizza are big! The spinach pizza is my favorite.

I treat pizza like finger food, unless it is deep dish Chicago Style. That usually requires a fork and knife.
