It's called the "Bashara Bird"

LOL! He looks much better now. 3 hours exactly. Basted with real butter so it is crispy.

Your picture made my tummy growl with hunger. Enjoy!

This time of year always inspires us to peruse the National Archives Catalog for historic recipes and food related records. Enjoy!

Many of us have spent the last few months learning new skills while keeping safe at home. Making bread has become very popular in so many households. You may have mastered sourdough, brioche and an Italian loaf, but have you tried these rolls and biscuit recipes found in the National Archives Catalog?

Smaller gathering this year? This recipe for Baking Powder Biscuits makes 100 portions, but they are sure to freeze well!

I had chocolate cream pie for breakfast. I am “eating my feelings” as they say.

Our Thanksgiving plans were blown to smithereens last night when my daughters roommate tested positive for COVID. This woman is nearly 30, a functional alcoholic NURSE, who is not taking precautions.

My daughter was briefly in her presence on Tuesday but had no idea her roommate was sick. Then my daughter came over here to study all day Tuesday. So, I was exposed, albeit briefly, when we walked by each other. Probably no higher risk than going to the grocery store but still.

Heath Dept is now involved. The roommate had been reported to the hospital where she works. They say our risk is low and they’ve started tracing.

Sadly, all 3 of us are home alone. And we are all online trying to find my youngest a new place to live. Sigh. I need more pie.

So sorry to hear about the roommate's Covid ruining your family's Thanksgiving. Sigh. Chocolate cream pie seems like a logical response.

You've got a few years on me, anneg, but I know how you feel. I get frustrated that I'm not as energetic as I used to be. It's also becoming difficult to stand for long periods of time while prepping meals. My back starts to hurt, and I know that it's time for a break - like now. Everything is packed and ready for delivery to my brothers. They will have to reheat hot items, but no real cooking is involved. DH is doing kitchen cleanup. We'll nosh throughout the day, but mostly we both plan to chill. I'm almost ready for a glass of wine: It's 5:00 somewhere :D

My Thanksgiving dinner turned out well. I roasted a lovely chicken from a local farm using Ina Garten's recipe for "Perfect Roast Chicken" and made gravy with the drippings. Also green bean casserole Italian style (garlic, tomatoes, olive oil and Italian herbs) and mashed potatoes. I baked a pumpkin pie yesterday and made whipped cream today. When all the food was all ready, we packaged up half of everything for our friends and he came to pick it up. Then we enjoyed our dinner.

This evening we had FaceTime with our son, DIL, and two grandsons. So it's been a good day.

Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving! Turkey meatballs in gravy are reheating in slow cooker. Potatoes are peeled and simmering on the stove. Pierogis will need to be reheated when DH is ready to do his door-dash to my brothers. Someone gave my sister a 17# turkey that she is roasting, and she is going to bake stuffing in a casserole dish. She cooked sweet potatoes a couple weeks ago and froze them. She'll reheat them with brown sugar, butter, and marshmallows. Her adult son will join her, and they'll watch football.

Whatever you are doing to celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope you will all have a wonderful holiday. Be safe and stay well.
What a wonderful thought for you to prepare and deliver your brothers a Thanksgiving meal! I am sure they are very thankful. Enjoy your your glass of wine!

I have enjoyed hearing about all the food and the descriptions plus pictures! Maybe next year I will be in the mood to cook like previous years. I settled for wine and m&m’s. Lol

That’s nutritious, right? Fruit and water in the wine. Milk in the M&M’s for protein. You’re good. You covered at least 2 food groups!

Despite such a discouraging day, I had a good meal tonight. I wasn’t going to fix the packaged stuffing I received but changed my mind. I used 1/2 cup of pan dripping for part of the added water. It was actually decent and I am the only one who eats it. It’s not GF either.

The bird ended up being over cooked but it has a good flavor. I split it into 4 bags, added some water to the drippings to make a broth and poured it over the meat. It was fine and I have 3 more bags in the freezer.

I fixed a big veggie plate for my youngest to pick up out front. I had bought her some GF bread and non dairy butter. I sent her home with 70% alcohol wipes, paper plates, napkins and paper towels to minimize the use of the kitchen. I also had an extra 5 pack of disposable masks and a partial box of medical gloves. Now she can clean the doorknobs, fridge door, counters, etc.

It was good to “hang out” with you all today. Hope your day was nice and food was yummy! Blessings!

Thank you for sharing this. I learn so much on here. It’s cool to see the origin of recipes from our ancestors.

We had a ham steak, I put orange marmalade mixed with Dijon on it, roasted sweet potatoes, and coleslaw. A quiet day.

Thank you all for sharing your Covid Thanksgiving Meals and meal planning. I enjoyed hearing about what everyone was doing from around the world. Here is a pic of our table yesterday. Just Mr. Pirate and I. We had vegan field roast ( grains and veggies made into a loaf with puff pastry on the outside), mashed potatoes, mushroom gravy, cranberries, sautéed spinach, basic stuffing and rolls. That is what is on the dinner table. Before dinner we watched our beloved Lions blow another Thanksgiving day game with a couple of local IPA's, a vegetable and cracker platter and mixed nuts. It was a lovey day but we missed our big family dearly.

I had chocolate cream pie for breakfast, again. No guilt whatsoever. LOL! I did eat a plate of leftovers for lunch.

My oldest and I are meeting at the beach on Saturday morning. It is easy to social distance at the beach. Park your chairs near the water's edge, facing the water and made sure there is a good 6' between you. Then lay towels or sheets around you. That makes people think you're expecting others so they don't invade your space.

Beautiful spread! Where's the wine? :D

Funny you should ask, BDE. We took a trip to Napa about 10 years ago for our anniversary. We brought back several bottles of wine and open them on special occasions. We opened up a 2008 Keenan Merlot. Keenan is a small winery in St. Helena. I often think about all of the small batch, back road wineries we visited. Mostly family run. Covid must really be hurting them as they are not typically wines that sell in stores. They rely heavily on winery tours that I am sure are not taking place.

My cranberry curd tart on almond crust (all gluten free) was amazing and will be a new Thanksgiving staple, if not Christmas as well. Everything else went really well. Happy post Thanksgiving everyone. I hope you had a great day.

Decided to pop this in the oven before I go to the beach. GF, DF, EF, NF.

It called for 10 Italian plums. I have regular plums. I used 4-5 of them. Hopefully it will turn out tasty. Youngest will stop by on her way to work to pick up some. I’ll take some to the beach for my oldest.

This looks good. Do you think it would work with pears? Was going to make a crumble tomorrow with some I need to use up.
