Traditional Thanksgiving recipes? My grandmother made a turkey, and a ham. Always homemade rolls, and freshly made cranberry sauce. Usually a pumpkin pie.

She made a green bean casserole, but it was far better than the standard fare.

Green Beans with Tomatoes -Italian Style

Similar to this one, but made into a casserole smothered with parmesean and mozzarella cheese, and garlic croutons on top.

Green bean casserole made with fresh green beans, sautéed onions and mushrooms, and a creamy white sauce. No canned beans or cream of mustsoup!

My grandmother makes homemade potato sausage, with all natural casing. Bits of potato, mild seasoning and pork sausage, so amazingly good. Mashed potatoes from scratch, homemade turkey gravy...man I miss comfort food.

I make a really good cranberry relish that I’ve converted a lot of people from “I don’t like cranberry” to “I like that cranberry”.

1 bag fresh cranberries
1 packet apple cider (dry mix)
1 cup brandy
2 cups sugar (I think, it may be 1). I would start with 1, you can always add more if it’s too tart, that’s what I do.
Pinch of salt

add everything to a sauce pan (careful not to light brandy up if you cook on gas) and simmer until cranberries pop and break down, stirring frequently. Cool and serve. Can be made ahead of time and refrigerated.

I haven’t made it in almost a year, that’s why I can’t remember the amount of sugar off top of my head. Don’t have it written down any where either. Add 1 cup and see if it’s too tart, then add more to taste until it pleases your palate, then remove from heat.

The cranberry-orange bread sounds great, especially when baked in that beautiful pan!

My late mother would make a molded cranberry-orange salad for the holidays, usually with pecans and grape halves in it, sometimes chopped apple. She used an old-fashioned food grinder to grind the fresh cranberries and the unpeeled orange. This was pre-food processor times. She used individual molds so we each had our own, served on lettuce on a small plate. Very tasty and refreshing!

I made it a couple times but thought it was too much work and messy to make. A food processor would make it much easier.

This is pretty close to what she made:

Maybe check out Paula Deen’s Wayne’s Cranberry sauce? Its quick and easy and fabulous. Wrap it with turkey and dressing in soft tortillas for leftovers. Yummy

These green bean recipes sound good! I often use onion, garlic, and tomatoes when I cook green beans. My mother's method was Southern style, usually with ham and onion, and cooked a long time. I never much liked green beans until I learned there were other ways to cook them!

@BetteDavisEyes aren't you worried about getting your nails done at a salon?

Not at all. DH and I have both been there three times since they reopened in June. The techs always wear masks - even pre-COVID, and clients must wear them now. The pedicure chairs have always been well-spaced for privacy. They have added plexiglass shields to the manicure stations and are using only every other seat. We've been going to Red Gloss for a couple of years: The salon is immaculate, and all of the techs are competent and very professional.

I love fresh green beans, but not canned or frozen. A simple way to cook fresh green beans is with red potatoes and fresh garlic. Add some fresh Italian parsley. Sprinkle with salt and fresh cracked pepper and I could make a meal out of this dish.

I made a very pretty green bean salad for Christmas last year.

Really good, and festive. Red and green.

My fave sweet potato recipe:

From the Mayberry Cookbook, Robert E. Lee Natural Bridge Sweet Potato Pone:

sweet 'tater pone

Robert E. Lee Natural Bridge Sweet 'Tater Pone

Alice and Jim Schwenke--Houston, Texas

"A special treat when made with sweet 'taters grown in the Darlings' garden near Old Man Kelsey's woods."

3 cups grated raw sweet 'taters (about 3 medium sized) (I use my food processor)

1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup chopped pecans
1 cup milk
1 egg, beaten
3 tablespoons butter (I used margarine)

Grease a 1-1/2 quart baking dish. (9x13 pan, do grease it well or someone will be scrubbing!) In a mixing bowl combine the sweet 'taters, nutmeg, sugar and 1/2 cup of pecans. Add the milk and egg. Pour into the prepared baking dish and sprinkle with the remaining pecans. Dot with butter. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 45 to 60 minutes.

Serves 4 to 6 generously!

DH made Lasagna on Thursday.
(Maybe a twice or three times a year thing) So I’ll be having the last of it today for breakfast. That is all. :D

It just hit.me.in.the.face.

I'm going to miss some things that I loved, such as pole beans cooking down on the stove for hours, sharing my lace cookies with the neighborhood friends.....

My favorite way to eat sweet potatoes is baked, served with butter. Simple and delicious. Healthy too.

Not so healthy here today :D.

It's been dark and rainy all day. Made this for the first time. I actually thought the sugar quantity was an error but it works really well.

Brought home some marked-down frozen mixed veggies, marked down thin cut sirloin, and weekly flyer sale beef broth.

Vegetable-beef soup and rouladen in my future!

Looks wonderful, but I'd like for someone else to make it for me. :)

Today I'm making beef stew with red wine, beef broth, onions, garlic (carrots and potatoes soon to go in) plus some bay leaves, some chopped fresh tomato and fennel, a wee dash of balsamic vinegar. I'll drop off most of it for a friend recovering from hip replacement surgery.

Cold and rainy today, so I thought I would make grilled cheese and home made tomato soup.

When I make grilled cheese I spread Hellmann’s mayonnaise on the outside the bread instead of butter, and some cracked pepper too.

My mother would make this for me when I was a child and wasn't feeling well. It was so good. I'm sure she used butter, though. And the soup may have been Campbell's!
