Tragedy rocks Texas sheriff’s office after four deputies die by suicide in six weeks

A Texas police department has been left in shock after four of its deputies died by suicide within the span of six weeks.

The death of Deputy Christina Kohler was announced by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) last week. The 37-year-old law enforcement officer had joined the force in 2018 and served in the courts division.

Three days after Kohler was found, it was also announced that former Harris County deputy Maria Vasquez, who left the department in December, also died by suicide.
Earlier last week, another former deputy, William Bozeman, was found dead under similar circumstances. Former deputy Long Nguyen, 58, also took his own life on February 6, according to the medical examiner.

Suicide can be contagious, especially in small or close-knit communities. Once a suicide is reported, it may influence others who are similarly depressed to act on their own self-destructive impulses. Hopefully that department is extending help to their employees, and investigating the mental health issues there and how they are treated.

Research spanning centuries has since firmly established that suicide is susceptible to social contagion effects. Social contagion is exactly what it sounds like — it is when behaviors spread throughout a community. Specifically in the case of suicide, suicide clusters begin to develop. Suicide clusters reflect spikes in suicides that can be traced to a particular suicide that served as the initial trigger. Oftentimes these clusters will emerge in particular communities that are either at risk or personally impacted in some way by the original suicide.

The Social Contagion of Suicide

I’m not sure if it’s necessarily more common among younger people, but suicide clusters are a well-documented phenomenon that can develop in a variety of communities. Law enforcement can be an insular group in and of itself, and it’s possible that seeing one or more members of said groups commit suicide could influence others within the community who are already struggling.
