[…] the newborn was given emergency medical care but did not survive.

The mother, who was identified only as a U.S. national, was part of a group of young adults traveling in Europe, the prosecutor's office said, adding that the incident was being looked into as a possible "case of pregnancy denial."

The mother was taken to a hospital, where she was undergoing a medical procedure following childbirth, the prosecutor's office said. It said she was also being held under police custody at the facility.

What country was the baby a citizen of? There could be more than one jurisdiction having authority.

from what i found on wikipedia

“Children born in France to tourists or other short-term visitors do not acquire French nationality by virtue of birth in France.”

the only exception would be if the child’s father is a french citizen, but that doesn’t seem so likely if the mother was on a european trip with a group of students from the US.

what i found about US citizenship, when the parents are US citizens but the child was born abroad:

it seems that the child would most likely get US citizenship but they would still have needed to go through a process to obtain citizenship for the child.

so it seems like the child would not have any citizenship for now…

(someone correct me if i’m wrong, this is what i found with a quick search)

edit: i misunderstood the US information at first

Studies are available on "pregnancy denial".
It has been used as a defense at trial for infanticide.
Certainly not all mothers who claimed "pregnancy denial" went on to kill their newborns.

The infant was reportedly attached to its umbilical cord and wrapped in a cloth when it was found, Barron's reported, citing local police.

The body was found after it had been moved to a trash can nearby, CNNreported, citing authorities

The U.S. Embassy in Paris did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's requests for comments, but told CNN they are "monitoring" the case.

moved to a trash can by whom? the 'mother'?

The 18-year-old, who has not been publicly named, is accused of throwing the newborn from a second-floor window of a Paris hotel on Monday, Feb. 24, PEOPLE previously reported, citing the Paris prosecutor’s office.

The baby still had its umbilical cord attached to it. This MONSTER apparently moved her baby to the trash bins after she threw it >:(

Where did you read that the young woman had moved the newborn to a trash bin? Neither the French articles in Le Parisien, or in Paris-Match mention anything about a trash bin, there is only that she threw out the newborn from a window, and that witnesses alerted by cries/screams raised the alarm.
From Le Parisien translated into English:

American student, 18, 'who hurled her newborn baby from Paris hotel room to its death' is identified as Mia McQuillin from Oregon

I predict she will not be sentenced to prison, due to her age and some other factors. Did no one in her life realize she was pregnant? Did every student have their own hotel room? No one suspected anything while she had a secret pregnancy and labored alone?

Who was she in France with? I know she's 18 but this happens too frequently - Lexi Trevino comes to mind - and others around these people need to be held accountable in some way I M O.

I was not familiar with who sponsored her ‘Gap Year Program’ but here is a link to one search I found.(NOTE: Please correct me if I am wrong but I also believe some church denominations sponsor ‘Gap Year’ Programs)
What is a Gap Year – Gap Year Association
i found this:

“It has been revealed that the woman was traveling through the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based EF Gap Year, according to the Associated Press. On the group’s Instagram, the company says it college students aged between 18 and 22 their “best year ever.””

here you can see some european trips EF offers:

(but not sure if she might have been doing a longer program?)

Oh, so this was an EF tour. I am well familiar with them. They do lots of student and young people travel programs. They are a good organization.

From the EF website, if these dates for next year's gap year programs are anything to go by, her program would have started in mid February, so very recently.

These programs seem to be fully booked a year in advance, so my guess is she probably became pregnant months after booking and didn't want to miss out on the "best semester ever".
I am utterly at a loss for words about the throwing out the window part of this. She could have abandoned the baby without such violence. There are people in France who would have been overjoyed to adopt the child. I am no psychiatrist but there is clearly something very wrong that I just can't fathom.

She could have just placed the baby out in the hallway.
I know these cases are nowhere near that simple, though, because the girl or woman who does this is psychologically troubled.
