The profile of Bouhlel, 31, that has emerged from leaked reports of his cellphone contacts and police interrogations with his acquaintances is not just of a troubled young immigrant from Tunisia living in France, it’s of a midnight cowboy on the Côte d’Azur, depressive, confused, filled with rage.

None of which means Bouhlel did not, in his last days, choose to identify with the terrorist organization that calls itself the Islamic State, or perhaps with some affiliate of al Qaeda. “Being unbalanced never kept anyone from being a jihadist,” David Thomson, author of a book on French jihadists, told the local daily newspaper Nice-Matin.

The latest

Romania’s foreign ministry says a Romanian man has died of wounds sustained in the Bastille Day truck attack in Nice.

The ministry said French authorities on Tuesday confirmed the man’s death. He had previously been declared missing. No further details were provided.

Fifty-nine people are still hospitalized, 29 of them in intensive care.

Italy says five of the 84 dead in the Nice truck attack were Italians, including two couples celebrating a recent retirement.

Joggers, cyclists and sun-seekers are back on Nice’s famed Riviera coast, a further sign of normal life returning on the Promenade des Anglais where dozens were killed in last week’s Bastille Day truck attack.

We never learn, we just keep, after the fact, coming up with another way to try and stop this. Something else will be tried. Soft targets - powerlessness, we need to try to IMO do something that results in less and less people wanting to kill western society

Stout vehicle barriers will guard the entrances to the Paris Plages beach festival when it opens on Wednesday, six days after a truck driver killed 84 people when he mowed through a crowd on the French Riviera.

A Third of Nice Truck Attack’s Dead Were Muslim, Group Says

Muslim funerals were being held for at least 30 of those who died during the Bastille Day attack, including men, women and children.
The Paris prosecutor’s office, which handles terrorism investigations, said on Tuesday that all 84 people killed in the attack had been formally identified, meaning that the number of Muslim fatalities may be even higher. The number of people who were wounded was also raised, to 308 people.

barbarity touches the whole world and that the people here, the victims, are not those who commit the crimes in Syria and Iraq.”

many people “don’t see that some Muslim children were killed with the other children.”

heavy Muslim turnout at least partly to the fact that there is less drinking at the Bastille Day festival than at other big events in Nice because it is a family-oriented celebration.
It is also less religious than Nice’s other major festivals:

People from at least 13 countries lost their live

several Americans were not accounted for,

"The French authorities were today accused of lying about the Bastille Day massacre as they covered up chronic security failings that allowed 84 people to die.

As family of victims prepared to sue, there was particular anger that a 19-tonne lorry five times over the weight limit had been allowed to run people down on Nice seafront.

Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel was unchallenged by police before he attacked the crowds watching a July 14 firework display in what should have been a pedestrianized zone."

How to live with terrorism: What France can learn from Israel

Snip

In a radio interview on Sunday, Yaakov Perry, a former Shin Bet chief now in Parliament, recommended deeper intelligence supervision of neighborhoods "where Muslims, refugees, Daesh supporters of various sorts live," using an Arabic acronym to refer to the Islamic State. He also suggested that the French police were complacent, referring to news reports that the driver in Nice had told officers he was delivering ice cream. "If the driver says he has ice cream, open the truck and check if he has ice cream," Perry said.

That the attack occurred at a mass gathering for Bastille Day, France's national holiday, had Israelis shaking their heads. Micky Rosenfeld, an Israeli police spokesman, said that to secure a major event like Independence Day celebrations, when tens of thousands of people gather along the Tel Aviv seafront to watch an air and naval display, officers gather intelligence for weeks beforehand, and erect a 360-degree enclosure of the area, with layers of security around the perimeter.

Main roads are typically blocked off with rows of buses, and smaller side streets with patrol cars. In addition to a large uniformed and undercover police presence, counterterrorism teams are strategically placed to provide a rapid response if needed.

For intelligence gathering, Shin Bet has used a "basic coverage" method, which involves homing in on a particular neighborhood or population sector that is considered a potential security risk. The agency then builds an intimate system of surveillance and a network of local informers who can point to any sign of suspicious or unusual activity.

Makes much more sense. Did you know that the video that has been aired endlessly (truck slow then speeding up/ motorcycle) was right BEFORE the barricade erected to close off the street? I did not. Rachel explained it, and when you look you will see the fenced, white barricade for a second. That was why he sped up then - to break through.

I never understood the slow speed of the truck at the onset of the video,(on first seeing I thought this certainly looks like a careful driver-certainly did not look like he was trying to maul as many he could at that speed-befuddled me). I thought that the increase in the speed was becasue of the motorcycle guy, not the crash through point.

This also makes more sense, in that maybe it was just me, but I had the sense they had been reporting that he drove though a barracade at the hospital. He did not. Blocking the road off that far ahead of the crowd did not make sense at the time.

I could not understand why his "route " had been reported as so long. I had the sense that the barracade had been crashed long before that video - it was not - that was the very beginning of the tradegy.

It also explains the motorcycle - which never made sense to me, nor did all the cops running after the truck. All of a sudden, LE in front of the barracade ,caught on to what he was about to do. That is why they were running after it and shooting.

When I first saw it and realized they were shooting , it hit me as god aren't they afraid of hitting people with bullets. But now it makes sense - they knew people were behind the gate he was heading towards- and was going to crash through.

It then seems like it would make sense (surprised we have not heard something like this), that , speculation, it would seem the ones running after him were yelling stop or something. It was not like they had just started running - they were already in full stride .

It makes sense (since it not something humans tend to do - go crashing through steel gates) there would be a hesitation then I am going to do this floor it.

All this time I thought that video was he had been through the barricade for some time, and was getting close to where the congreation of people heaviest, which is why he speed up.

This also fits in with the very graphic video (contemplating posting) when the truck is coming toward a guy filming the crowd behind him. It was a very traumatic video in that it showed all the happiness right before, a band playing, and then oh my god.He was really going fast in that video .

Also hit 300 and at times hit 70 mph

Maybe many of you already got this !! DId most of you already figure this out??

This is a topic of hard issues. Many in the world condemn Israel and the treatment of Palestinians, Israel defends itself. To me, I would have to go there and see the truth, I have no idea of what to believe as each side presents compelling evidence.

It is a very very difficult and sad issue. I have been there and to many Arab countries. Like I've said before, people are sick and tired of hate and violence. They want peace. Both sides. All sides. Except, of course, those who incite hatred towards the West and democracy.

I was as I previously posted on European tour when this happened (I came here for info!) The dates prior to this law enforcement was noticeable at festivals etc but after the promoter hired armed security at the events.

Right! These are hard issues.

The tricky bit is that even with security, someone who wants do to harm will do it. Boxcutters brought down the World Trade Center. A truck rammed through barricades. A homemade bomb carried in a backpack went off at a marathon.....and restaurants, nightclubs, sidewalks are targets at any time as well.

Some of these terrorists seem to have turned into terrorists so quickly - they are not on the radar of enforcement, but make a decision to kill and do it.

We can't live in a tunnel, 10 feet thick, guarded at both ends with tanks. We need to live.

The ultimate solution isn't more "stuff" to protect us. The solution is to eliminate the DESIRE to kill other people.

How frightening for this family!

I live in a foreign country that is a resort area. Topless seems to have lost favor except with the French. Perhaps it is in the US as well, but I see females of all ages wearing thong bikinis. And I mean even young girls. If tee shirt and
shorts are a problem, I cannot even imagine what topless and thong will do.

I say if men , and that includes men such as the Duggars, cannot control their thoughts and actions around women, they need to be insitutionalized or else walk around with blindfolds when they go out.

This worldwide problem , and that includes the US, of controlling women has to end. Really, where do men get off thinking they own women?

This is so true. Is it achieveable? I hope so. Though, probably not in my lifetime.
There has to be a way to stop the festering hatred. For the love of your own people to be more powerful than the hatred for others.

...I'm a dreamer.
