France is a very secular country and has established many things to keep religion out of schools.The Muslims see this as discrimination.

France also has its colonial issues.

But who knows with these crazy people. We have our Timothy McVeigh, Dylan Roof, Columbine killers and on and on. Each individual has his own brand of hatred.

For many Muslims, it’s the official insistence on oneness and sameness that rankles. In 2008, a French court denied a Moroccan woman French citizenship on the grounds that her veil and her submissiveness to her husband were “assimilation defects.” Though the New York Times reported “almost unequivocal support for the ruling across the political spectrum,” one Muslim leader told the paper he worried the decision set a precedent for arbitrary decisions of what constitues a radical Muslim lifestyle. In 2010, the French Senate banned public wearing of face-coverings, including the Muslim face-veil, the niqab. And in 2013, the government launched what it called a Charter for Secularity in School, a set of guidelines on 15 key points of secularism to be posted in classrooms as an attempt to keep religion out of school. The then-government education minister, Vincent Peillon, insisted it was an attempt “to get everyone together,” but it had the opposite effect, with Muslim leaders claiming it stigmatized their community.

IMO This was a well planned and funded attack. Not a random attack by someone pissed off for being discriminated against.

That truck, the ammo. This was backed by an organization. One filled with hate for the west and its values. JMO

Yup, but the media is already going with their "lone-wolf" lies which they can get away with because so many people just want to bury their head in the sand over this mess.

Twitter live hasn't gone silent. It's morning in France. Should be more news but what more can anyone say? Add another person to the body count? Great minds better be getting together asap.

How many are mourning saddens me. RIP all.

So sad. I am at a loss on how we can stop these maniacs!

Many of the dead in Nice are said to be children:(

Does anyone have a list of terrorist attacks committed by radical Muslims in "non-Muslim" nations since 2004? I agree with the previous poster that there are so many that we are becoming desensitized. It's happening so often now.

Since 2004, I can recall the following:
London subway bombings
9/11
Charlie Hebdo in France;
the coordinated attacks on cafe, soccer stadium and concert in Paris;
The Brussels airport and subway bombings; Boston marathon bombings;
Car bomb in Times Square that failed to go off;
Machete attack/beheading on London soldier;
Fort Hood attack;
Attack at US military recruitment center;
Machete attack at Nazareth deli in Ohio;
Machete attack/beheading in Oklahoma;
Attack in San Bernadino;
Pulse nightclub mass shooting;
Of course I recall several attacks on US embassies - but those were in predominantly Muslim nations as we're all the beheadings of journalists and the kidnapping of the school girls - These attacks go on all day long in predominantly Muslim nations

May God give strength to the families of the victims in Nice.

Of course these are all horrible, but if we took a list of the crazy killings in the US, it would be equally disgusting.

There are so many mass killings in the US and then the serial killers and the beheadings by killers and so many other weird killings. I think all killers kill out of self hatred. They label it different things. Their rationalization for why it is OK.

I am just reading about this now....I decided to put my phone away and get lost in the day, playing with my baby, my dog, watching bad tv with my brother, eating sushi with my husband. 80+ people who will never get to do any of those things. Children who will never grow up to have their own children. Parents who will never get to become grandparents. This has pushed me to a place I never thought I would be. By trade, I'm a research scientist, I crave answers, reasoning. I feel all that I know is that all that I know and find comfort in is no more. I am literally scared to read the news. My heart can't handle a small body, draped with cover, the life gone but little doll so near. It's becoming so hard to believe in the good, to have faith that we as humans can come together. Why? Why do some of the people of the world seem hellbent on seeing its demise? Are we so blind to all the beauty around us? The amazement in it all? Are we numb to the deep sense of moving love that arises within when watching a loved ones chest move up and down while they sleep, knowing they are safe and alive? What is wrong with us, what can fix this? I just want to hide from it all. I will pray, through salty tears rolling down my face for the world, for the people of France, while I haven't even finished praying for my city. Then I will say a prayer that my prayer gets where it's going. I feel like maybe the world is so eclipsed by an evil smog that my prayers become enveloped in, never reaching their destination. Sorry to ramble on, but I've spent a week crying in secret, so my little one doesn't worry about the tears that come for strangers. I'm just emotionally drained, so frightened for the world our children will one day be left alone to mend and I'm just sick to my stomach, and torn between never picking up my phone again or reading and watching everything there is to see on this sickening act as a sort of punishment. stay safe my friends, hold your loved ones tonight.

Well Obama stands with France. His prayers go out to y'all. Will he/we do anything? Nope.

Also new in the updates:

According to AFP, which cites a police source, the truck used in the attack was a rental, rented in the region just a few days ago.

Obama is POTUS, I don't think he can "do anything" about France. MOO What do you want him to do?

All the more heartbreaking for the city to have someone born there do this. Very painful.

A Muslim is always a Muslim first and foremost and a Brit/American/French/Swede a distant second.
