Frank McCourt, the retired New York City schoolteacher who launched his late-in-life literary career by tapping memories of his grim, poverty-stricken childhood in Ireland to write the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir "Angela's Ashes," has died. He was 78.

McCourt, who was recently treated for melanoma and then became gravely ill with meningitis, died today in New York City, his brother Malachy told the Associated Press.

I was so sad when I read he was so ill last week. I knew it was coming but it still hurts. He was one of my favorite authors. God bless him and may he rest in peace.

NEW YORK – Frank McCourt, the beloved raconteur and former public school teacher who enjoyed post-retirement fame as the author of "Angela's Ashes," the Pulitzer Prize-winning "epic of woe" about his impoverished Irish childhood, died Sunday of cancer.
McCourt, who was 78, had been gravely ill with meningitis and recently was treated for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer and the cause of his death, said his publisher, Scribner. He died at a Manhattan hospice, his brother Malachy McCourt said.

Me, too. He was a wonderful talent. Considering his deprived childhood, his health couldn't have been that good.

RIP, Mr. McCourt.

Wow, I thought I posted on this last night, but it seems to be missing. Just wanted to say that I loved Frank McCourt. He was one of my favorite authors. He will be missed by so many. I only wish he had started to write sooner so there would be more of his books to read.

RIP
