CDC Atlanta shooting: Photo of accused CDC shooter released by GBI
According to GBI, Patrick Joseph White fired 500 shots with nearly 200 hitting buildings at the CDC.
The mix of the five guns was described by GBI Director Chris Hosey as rifles, shotgun and possibly a handgun, with some uncertainty as to the exact combination. He said the majority of the shell casings on scene came from a long gun.
Among the other revelations were that nearly 200 rounds struck six CDC buildings and that 500 shell casings were recovered at the scene.
They should stop using that meaningless term “long gun”. It’s an assault rifle. It wasn’t a gun for hunting game.![]()

Just to give a feel for how many shots were happening:
Extremely dangerous for everyone in the area. If this was an AR 15 using typical military grade ammunition, those bullets can travel up to a mile or more before slowing down.sheer insanity
I agree. I think it's a driver's license photo that is old.I wonder if that's an older pic of him. He looks 16 to me, not 30.
The shooter was stopped by CDC security guards before driving to a nearby pharmacy and opening fire late Friday afternoon, a law enforcement official has told the AP. The official wasn’t authorized to publicly discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity. The 30-year-old man, Patrick Joseph White, later died, but authorities haven’t said whether he was killed by police or killed himself.
I am dismayed a family that KNEW someone in the household was suicidal would keep guns at all, even in a secure safe. Get rid of them! (Yes, I know people love their guns, but please don't prioritize them over a family member who is a danger to self and others.)Are gun safes really so flimsy that a killer can break into them? I don't believe the excuse this monster's parents are trying to use. JMO, they're just trying to avoid responsibility.
People like that are usually the type to deny their own child is suicidal or has mental problems. We've seen it often will mass shooters, especially those from affluent backgrounds.I am dismayed a family that KNEW someone in the household was suicidal would keep guns at all, even in a secure safe. But...he was a grown adult. I don't think the parents would be criminally responsible, imo, for his actions - unless they had guardianship or something like that, I suppose.
I think it was a mistake to have the guns in the home, in a safe or not, but I don't think it was a crime.

He was armed with a Bushmaster XM-15 AR-15–style rifle, illegally modified to accept high-capacity magazines,[1][2][3] and he had multiple 30-round ammunition magazines.[28] In his car, he had a Savage Arms Axis XP hunting rifle and a Mossberg 500 shotgun.[1] He was wearing body armor, a military helmet, and a recording camera attached to his helmet through which he livestreamed the attack on the online service Twitch.[17][29] As he approached the grocery store entrance, he was recorded on his livestream saying "just got to go for it".[30]

Don't forget Adam Lanza who was responsible for mass murder at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. He killed 20 children and 6 school staffers with 3 military grade semi-automatic "long guns" /s, purchased for him by his wealthy mother.
Yes, and he killed that same mother prior to going on to Sandy Hook.
It’s just difficult and traumatizing to imagine your own child can be a murderer when you remember him as a sweet little baby whose diapers you’ve changed.

Exactly, there never should have been guns in the house knowing he was suicidal. At least put a measure of difficulty or a hurdle to possibly prevent tragedy.Snipped
I hear ya, but this family had LE come to their house before because he was suicidal. They knew, imo.
I have sympathy for them and do not want to pile on them as I'm sure they are broken by this. And at the same time, I wish they had put a priority on safety and gotten rid of the guns completely while living with a suicidal son.
