GA - Active Shooter on Emory College campus - Atlanta - Aug 8, 2025

It’s been reported he was mentally ill, like the guy that shot 3 ppl at target, no pic of him yet either, go figure.

Whether he was mentally ill or not is irrelevant to his cries about the vaccine. In his last act as a human being, he blamed the vaccine for his mental health problems. That is clearly misinformation that could easily motivate other individuals to do what he did. So I don't think it's a bad idea for RFK Jr, in his official role, to make a statement, clearly and succinctly condemning the vaccine lies and standing for science and scientists.

MOO.

Ken White and his wife were watching television, having just gotten a call from their son, Patrick, around 5 p.m.

“I asked him how he was doing,” Ken White recalled, “He said, ‘I’m gonna shoot up the CDC,’ and then he hung up.”

The couple changed their television channel to a local newscast, where Ken White saw the unmistakable image of his car at the scene.

Lots of details here:

GBI Director Chris Hosey said investigators determined the weapons had been secured and Patrick forced his way into the safe.
[snip]
“We thought they were safe,” he said. “I locked them up. I kept the key on my person 24-7 and I slept with it.”
The family said Patrick showed signs of mental illness over the past two years, including depression, but do not know if he was ever formally diagnosed. They shared medication bottles prescribed for depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder their son left behind.
[snip]
“It looks like there was no mental health therapy happening,” Woodward said. “From everything we can tell, he was getting medications for mental health issues, but not getting any treatment that involved therapy or anything other than a prescription script over and over again.”
The family believes Patrick’s anger toward the CDC stemmed from misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccine. Though his parents and family were vaccinated, Patrick claimed the vaccine was killing him.

The permanent cuts include about 100 people who worked in violence prevention. Some employees noted those cuts come less than two weeks after a man fired at least 180 bullets into the CDC's campus and killed a police officer.

"The irony is devastating: The very experts trained to understand, interrupt and prevent this kind of violence were among those whose jobs were eliminated," some of the affected employees wrote in a blog post last week.

My understanding was this was just a continuation of a layoff process that started April 1.
Wish it were an April 1 prank we could laugh off.

Scientists will leave to work where science is valued, imo, where their intrgrity and dedication are not mocked, and where their lives are not threatened. That place might not be in USA. We're at risk of a brain drain. imo

Yet, people cling to misinformation as if chosing sides in a pro-wrestling match.

US research scientists are already interviewing for jobs in Europe. It's rare to find top notch researchers in cutting edge areas of science and medicine. The US will lose many, many of its most talented scientists to other countries. You can't blame the scientists for leaving. Europe has much more to offer - a lower cost of living, high quality universal health care that's easy to use, great public transportation systems, including high speed rail, etc., less crime, better quality of life.

The attack was on Aug 8. Two days before the attack, on Aug 6, the shooter tried to get inside the CDC.

The man who attacked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention probably tried to enter the agency’s Atlanta campus days before the shooting, investigators believe....

“At that time, he was stopped at the first guard station and turned away by CDC Security without incident....the shooter did not attempt to enter campus on Friday, August 8, prior to the attack.”

For those following the attack on the CDC, Secy of HHS Robert F Kennedy, Jr. is currently being questioned in a US Senate hearing about his response to these attacks and how he's handling the risk to his employees there.

Sen. Warnock questioned him about whether he's ever been to the CDC in Atlanta to meet with the people there who work for him. He hasn't.
