Good Lord, I sure hope they DO lock him up and throw away the key!! any 12 yr old who can brutally murder an 8 yr old child is gonna be one helllofa serial killing adult. shudder :behindbar

Yeah, well maybe. I'm not ready for our society to give up on any 12 year old. If the United States of America with all its resources can't help this boy, then that's a pretty sorry thing, dontcha think?

Don't count on the good ole USA to help these delinquents out. You'd be surprised at how much taxpayers $$$ is spent on these perps (and yes, that's what they are, I don't care how old they are) with counseling, therapy, reunification, etc. and 2-3 years down the road, 90% of them are victimizing again. I don't feel sorry for them. Call me cruel. My child and I have been to hell and back at the hands of her abuser. The only people I feel sorry for in this particular story are 8 year old Michelle and her family.

Let's just hope the good old USA is there for them too.

Casshew,
I lean toward the BDI theory in the JonBenet case myself. I think it is the most plausible explanation given all of the information. It just creeps me out to imagine little kids choosing to commit such heinous acts. As a school teacher, I have a few in mind to keep my eye on... Just kidding! Most of my kids are awesome!

It is possible to feel sorry for someone, yet reason out that they are a danger to society. Hey, I don't care what money and help is spent on rehabilitating and "curing", (obviously this wasn't a mistake). The 8 year old losing her life will always outway all else when it comes to him ever being around children again

Wow, I'm sorry that your daughter was abused like that. Absolutely horrible!! I think I'd be bitter too if something like that happend to one of my children. HOwever, for now, I'm still not ready to ever think a 12 year old is beyond help.

Lawyer says young suspect didn't see slain girl
If convicted, boy would go free as a teen

Published on: 04/29/04

The lawyer for the boy accused of killing 8-year-old Amy Yates said today his client emphatically denies having anything to do with the murder.

"He steadfastly maintains he did not see this girl that day," Carrollton lawyer Gerry Word said of the 12-year-old.

--->>
In a telephone interview this morning, Word condemned police interrogation tactics and said the boy repeatedly told police he had nothing to do with the killing.

"He's emotionally upset he's being separated from his parents," Word said. "He's distraught he's accused of doing something he's knows he didn't do and that he has no knowledge of."

The 12-year-old murder suspect was questioned for four hours by police after being apprehended Tuesday evening, Word said. All the while, he proclaimed his innocence.

"He told the police that 20 times while they refused to let his parents come back and be with him," Word said. "If a parent had been in there, that interrogation wouldn't have gone on for four hours. It would have been stopped."

The boy apparently did give a statement, but it does not include any admissions, Word said, declining further comment on any evidence in the case. Four hours after the questioning of the boy began, the boy's father signed a statement advising the child of his right to consult a lawyer and waiving the boy's right to remain silent, Word said.

Carroll County Sheriff Terry Langley said he had no response to Word's assertions, but did say the questioning of the boy was done legally and fairly. --->>

The boy could be sentenced to no more than two years in detention if convicted of the brutal slaying -- less than some adults get for shoplifting or burglary.

Under Georgia law, if the boy is found to have committed the crime and is sentenced, the judge later could extend the sentence for two more years. --->>

Word said he decided to speak out after seeing District Attorney Pete Skandalakis' press conference on Wednesday.

"The public needs to know my client maintains his innocence," Word said. "The real killer may still be out there. The police have focused on only one suspect."

Shylock just posted this link this in the JBR forum...

Can you believe this boys rights were violated? I wonder where his parents were when the police had him for 4 hours?

~~~
ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) -- A 12-year-old Carrolton boy accused of strangling an 8-year-old neighbor girl was interrogated for four hours without his parents or an attorney present before reportedly admitting to the crime, his attorney said Thursday.
"My client steadfastly maintains his innocence in this case," said his lawyer, Gerald Word. "If there was an admission, it was not only under duress, it was flat wrong. I imagine I could have this 12-year-old admit to killing John Kennedy."
It was only after lengthy questioning Tuesday that the boy, whose name is not being released by authorities, allegedly acknowledged killing 8-year-old Amy Yates, Word said. The boy was charged with murder Tuesday evening.
I just heard that they will be trying this boy as a juvenille and he can't face more than two years in a juvenille facility. Hopefully, he'll receive much needed psychiatric care during that time.
God help our children when that little freak gets out. I wonder how many victims he'll rack up before it's over and done with. I can't help but think of Carlie, samantha...dru...and on and on. Thousands of victims because society wasn't protected from these monsters the first time around.
I'm just sick of this and it's because of people who demand and assume they can change the soul of a murderer. I hold them just as responsible if not more for the deaths of the innocents these turds will kill once released from their 'treatment'.
Is there any statistics on 'converted' murderers...? you know kids that have murdered, like this boy and then turned out alright with threapy?? how do you know when they are alright? What if they snap at 44 years old and kill someone? can you say that was a successful situation... until they snapped?
I have to say I am of the mindset ~ lock the door and throw away the key.
I am sorry if they didn't have a good homelife, or if they were abused etc etc.. I am tired of people blaming other people for what they did.
I don't want them back out, walking around and dating my daughter after a slap on the wrist in juvenile hall!
Excuse me? That was pretty uncalled for - accusing ME of being responsible for people murdering each other??? You've got a hell of a lot of nerve. Take that accusing pointing finger and turn it around on yourself.
Amen. Do people honestly think that two years incarceration, therapy, so-called "treatment", etc. etc. is going to change this kid? Think again. Read the articles on this story already. The kid's been in trouble constantly. Oh and now I see we have the "his rights were violated" mishmosh. This is where the victim and their families lose all their rights and the perpetrator gets them all. Literally makes me ill.
really, well I advocate putting murderers in jail or strapping them in to old sparky.... not talking on a couch for a couple years of R&R before being let loose on society again.
You were here not wanting this boy to be incarcerated for life. When you speak for the side of the perps you are ultimetly responsible for the actions they are allowed to commit because you support their being allowed to prey on innocents once again. Your feel good, love/save the perp is at the expense of some innocent future victim.
BTW, people don't murder each other..... one is a victim.... a murdered victim... one is a murderer.
Well you seem to have a reading comprehension problem if you think that anything I wrote above equals having him "talking on a couch for a couple of years of R&R." You're right. I was not wanting this pre-teen to be incarcerated for life and I still don't want him incarcerated for life. If you think that's speaking on the "side of the perps," then you're so very wrong. I could jump to a lot of conclusions about you as you did about me, but I'll refrain from doing so as its not going to help the problem. If you disagree with the system the way its set up now, perhaps instead of insulting people you don't even know, your time could be put to better use. Perhaps you could be spending your time writing to the people who can actually do something to change the laws instead of just whinning about the way it is. I'm not a doctor, so I don't know if this child can be helped or not. What I do know is that we don't have enough prisons to lock up everyone, so maybe we better try to figure out a way to rehabilitate some of them, because whether you like it or not, most of them will be released back into society one day and believe me, they'll be a hell of a lot worse than they were the day they entered prison and that's definately not what society needs.
