Only two years?! That's ridiculous.

A Carroll County boy accused of killing his 8-year-old neighbor girl was sentenced today to serve at least one year in a psychiatric treatment facility.

The most time he could have served under Georgia law was two years, because he was under 13 at the time the crime occurred.

"I'm limited on what I can do," said Juvenile Court Judge Daniel P. Camp, who imposed the sentence.

The boy, now 14, was 12 when he was accused of strangling his neighbor, Amy Yates. Her body was found April 26, 20004, near Twin Oaks Mobile Home Park, hours after she had left home to ride her bike to a friend's house.

The girl's parents attended the sentencing.

Tom Yates held up a photograph of Amy in her casket: "I want you to look at this picture, you little [expletive]."

The judge gave him credit for time served of 12 months and said he had to remain at the residential treatment center for no less than 12 months.

The judge gave center officials the option to extend the treatment beyond 12 months if they believed it was necessary.

Once released, the boy will be on supervised probation and have to wear an ankle monitor for six months.

Somehow I don't think this boy will be accepted back into the community.

Its a bit like the James Bulger murderers isnt it? They killed a baby then went to a facility that was far better than their homes, wanted for nothing, got a good education, then released with new identities,in suave new apartments that cost in excess of a million pounds in the same area they commited the murder Merseyside. poor baby got battered ,sexually abused, murdered, left on a railway line to get chopped in half, Seems the 2 little thugs got the better end of the deal from where Im sat!!

And they say crime doesnt pay???? :banghead:

This poor baby gets strangled by a 🤬🤬🤬🤬 !He gets a silly anklet and 2 years with no doubt lots of councilling ect...... and they wonder why parents get so angry over this
I think if you are gonna murder someone do it whilst you are young!!! and reap the rewards:furious:

I just now found this web site and had my account set up. In the beginning when I found this thread I was not going to even think about posting, but as I read the differant opinions I kept getting more and mroe aggrevated. Most may not even look back at these old threads but I wanted to say a few things anyway. Most who have followed the case now know that the 12 yr old defendant plead guilty.... although his attorney will say that his client says he is innocent and never saw or killed Amy, he continued to brag about the killing in the detention center. This is why the case was postponed for awhile. Also when talking about his past, the child was a bully and had threaten Amy several times prior to the incident. There is no way that she would have been playing with him in any way as she was scared of him.
Amy was such a loving child, carefree and wanted to help everyone. She one time saved up her money from various holidays so she could buy other less fortunate kids gifts and so forth. It is the hardest thing to know that this sweet beautiful child was snatched from her family by the hands of a cold blooded killer. This boy I feel will spend the better half of his teen and adult days in the prison system. He has shown absolutely no remose and no emotion over this incident. And as I said before he has even BRAGGED about how he killed. So for those of you who cry out for this child to not be given a harsh sentance it is a shame you don't know who this kid is as he could be moving to a town near you.

Hi and welcome to Websleuths!!! When it first happened, I couldnt' even imagine putting a 12 year old kid in prison and throwing away the kid, thinking instead that she should have serious therapy and possibly medication, etc. However, I guess I need to face the fact that its entirely true that some people are just born evil.

Amy absolutely didn't and shouldn't have died so young and so brutally. Its very hard to imagine.

Wow. That poor little 14 year old has been detained for years for a crime he didn't commit? That's terrible.

It is IF this mentally challanged 18 yr old is telling the truth. Although most facts he is giving have already been in the news. One thing to remember is that all evidence pointed to the 13 yr old as well as his own words.

This is local for me and very shocking!

District Attorney Pete Skandalakis says authorities are investigating the 18-year-old's claims. Public defender Gerald Word, who represented the younger boy, said he had learned that investigators were re-examining DNA and hair samples taken from the girl's body. He said the DNA did NOT match his client's.

Some reports on the TV news this morning said that he knew things that no one could have known, that weren't made public...I'm holding out for the DNA....also, they coulda done this murder together...huh?

I don't know much about this case but if the 18 yr old is mentally challenged, he could have been an unwitting partner in this crime. He would obviously be strong enough to kill this precious little girl. Let's just see how mentally challenged he is, though. At his age, there should be plenty of medical records available documenting his overall health. I'd like to see if he was interviewed back then by the investigators.

It's easy for me to understand the mentally challenged as I have a 6 yr old that is more like a 2 yr old developmentally. She is physically strong but doesn't always understand that. Not that she'd go choke someone, just that she doesn't get that her "play" is not always fun.

I hope true justice happens here, but I feel so badly for the family that they must go through all this again.

Having watched the "Interogation of Michael Crowe" I know that sometimes a youngsters "own words" are FED to them by unscrupulous LE. It's a shame, but it happens.

I'm hearing the 18 year old knows some unreleased info. I guess we'll have to wait to see it play out to be really sure.

The fact that he is mentally challanged has been in the Atlanta Journal Constitution since the beginning. Here is the link http://www.ajc.com/news/content/metro/stories/0210metyates.html .
As to the family... I can assure you that they only want to make sure the right person is punished for this henious crime to their daughter. We are also very upset that just when we thought that this chapter has been closed and we can move on it just got ripped back open again.

This poor family, having to deal with this all over again, the article says they just were ready to move on. I had forgot about this case :( and that the boy who was found guilty had only got 2 years, this was a huge case here when it all happened, quieted down for awhile.
