She described her attackers as younger than L*** and Elkins, and in court it was easy to see why.
L*** appeared small — perhaps 5 feet tall — and scared as he came into the courtroom in shackles and in an ill-fitting orange jumpsuit. He looked younger than 14, and when Barton asked if he had questions, L*** quietly answered, “No sir.”
Elkins, who is also small for his age, was dressed in a powder blue striped shirt and khaki pants. He appeared more at ease than Lang; when Barton told him he would read him his rights, Elkins said, “OK, judge.”

Sorry if this has already been posted but according to this article, police have a videotape showing evidence of the crime?

It also says little Antonio's middle name was Angel. My heart is breaking.

Thank you

So LE does have video. Interesting. Bet it was a surveillance camera from a nearby house or business. Someone was talking about a Bed N Breakfast nearby - could be. If LE has this crime on tape - then it's done. Over.

Now they have the gun as well.

Let 'em all fight about it and boast and threaten and do whatever on the net - doesn't matter. They are done.

I still say they will both take a plea and this won't go to trial.

Yes the arrest time is the booking time.
They could have been there for 12 hours before that being questioned.

Right? Mom and auntie didn't start talking to clear their conscience. IMO

This story is just plain horrific!! What I think scares me the most about it is looking through many of the early posts and the accusations and distrust of the mother in this case. It is sad because there have been many cases where it turns out the parents are guilty, i.e. Susan Smith. But there are also SO MANY cases of the parents being innocent, yet villified in the press-a few that come to mind include Elizabeth Smart, Mark Lunsford, and so many more I can't think of off the top of my head. And how many have gone to prison or even been on death row unjustly.

<modsnip>

I can't believe there are friends of theirs commenting and defending them. It is just so sick!!! I mean seriously!!! Can you think of any more despicable crime in the world than shooting a sleeping baby boy in the FACE in front of his MOTHER??? How does anyone defend that???

At a preliminary hearing, the defense could get a look at the prosecution’s evidence, Public Defender Kevin Gough said. Police have said they have a videotape showing evidence of the crime, Gough said, but he has not seen it nor knows where it came from.

I am really curious as to what this video of evidence of the crime. they don't say the have video OF the crime but of evidence of it.

 • #307
Is there video near where the gun was found?
Maybe they have video of them throwing the gun in?
Maybe it isn't somewhere you'd expect a camera?

you're right tl - very odd wording of that sentence. They have video evidence of the crime. What could that be? Maybe the 2 of them running away with the gun visible? Even so, that isn't proof (evidence) - is it? Maybe they have cell phone video of DE (or the 15 yr old) talking about it at a home? Someone in the room pushed the record button on their phone?

What could video evidence of the crime be?

JMHO

ETA: maybe it is just the wording and they do have the crime on tape. Video evidence. Means a video that is considered evidence. So you have 'video evidence' of the crime. Meaning they have a video of the crime. Make sense?

Wish we would get an LE update.

I think many of us are just plain jaded, but we have to remember that sometimes the truth is just stranger than fiction. We shouldn't just question a person who claims to be a victim-let LE do their jobs first. Sure, when we have a case where someone like Mark Redwine, who refuses LTD's, etc...at some point, suspicions do come into play.

But the jump at the first reports and video of a grieving mother with "not buying it" "she's just like Susan Smith" "she's worse than Jodi Arias" etc...and now we see that this whole thing is going to be attempted to become a racial issue???

Yes folks...sometimes African Americans really do commit crimes against white people. And for a white person to describe their attackers as black is perfectly fine. It is part of their description. Sex, age, height, race, complexion, tatoos, eye color, hair color, etc... I mean, if I am attacked, should I not comment on the persons race? We may wish society were colorless, but that just isn't the case.

I can't believe there are friends of theirs commenting and defending them. It is just so sick!!! I mean seriously!!! Can you think of any more despicable crime in the world than shooting a sleeping baby boy in the FACE in front of his MOTHER??? How does anyone defend that???

Where's the LOVE button?! Because I flippin love this!

My first major acquisition for my 'library' (aka the Stash, aka the Hoard) was a complete set of Christie's books in hard cover. :) I'm also a huge fan of mysteries in general, and will add to your list Rendell, George, James, Grimes and most recently Louise Penny!

But it's OK, I can stop reading any time I want! :floorlaugh:

Thanks for the list! I'm always looking for new sources for my habit. ;D

And of course you can stop any time! We have this thing completely under control!!

Possible things on the video:
I'm not looking at sources, just what the evidence on the video might be.

Video of them discussing the crime before they did it.

Video of them committing the crime.

Video of them fleeing the scene.

Video of them disposing of the gun.

Video of them disposing of their clothes.

Video of them discussing/admitting the crime after the fact.

Maybe the video is an attempted burglary some time prior to showing the boys with the same gun? OR what seems more likely would be them showing off for one of their friends' cameras and they recorded it for a youtube thing just goofing around. Later friend sees news and says ' oh snap, that's the gun they used in our video' . Maybe they do have one conscientious friend who would come forward with something like that. Kids that age have to video and film every single second of their day it seems. It wouldn't surprise me at all if that's what it is !

Also, so glad they found the gun. Now the odds of them getting off or pleading down to some tiny offense are much smaller. Justice for baby !

If there is a video (which would be great) why offer them a plea just fry 'em, they wont need a plea they are DONE! A 10 min trial , show video DONE!

The timeline is odd for this - the search for the gun began at 3:30 in the saltwater pond, and the arrests of mom and aunt were at 5 a.m.

They already had all the info they needed to find the gun before the arrests were made, it seems like. And the charges were for lying. So mom and auntie didn't feel "squeeze" to give the truth, IMHO. Very Curious.

It could have gone something like this...... Mom and Auntie shared names of shooters friends with LE. Friends gave info to LE related to location of gun. Upon finding the gun, LE feels they have enough evidence to charge Mom and Auntie with charge of lying to LE. Just a guess.

If there is a video - then the defense atty would encourage the suspect to plead guilty. Once he pleads guilty - there is no need for a trial. Trials are expensive and time consuming - no need for one if the defendant says "yea I'm quilty - I did it". Only thing left is sentencing. And, with a guilty plea - the court usually takes that into consideration when sentencing.

My prediction - they both will get LWOP.

JMHO

ETA: Wait, after I read that - thought about it. Nope - shooter gets LWOP - the 15 yr old will get somewhere between 15 - 25 years.

I believe LE already had them in custody however the 'official' time of arrest is listed as 5am. jmo

Perhaps a plea in order to prevent a traumatized mother from having to live through a trial. Perhaps to prevent the city from having to deal with a public, racially charged trial. Those are reasons the state might consider offering a plea deal.

After their arrests, both women gave police new information that helped lead investigators to a small saltwater pond where they found a handgun, Glynn County police Chief Matt Doering said. He said the gun was being tested to determine whether it could be matched to the slaying last week of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago.

“We arrested them last night and brought them back to headquarters, where we afforded them the opportunity to make additional statements,” Doering said Tuesday. “They did, and that information led us to other witnesses ... (who) led us to an area where the gun was disposed of.”
