Emergency responders are searching for a missing 34-year-old Canton woman who disappeared early Monday morning, April 15, near a creek off Sandy Flats Road, not far from the Lumpkin County line.
The woman has been identified as Belinda Butterfield, said White County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Bob Ingram. Butterfield and her mother were out at the site around 4:30 a.m., and the mother told investigators her daughter voluntarily went into the water.
Authorities are still on scene trying to locate the woman as of Monday afternoon, and the incident remains under investigation, Ingram said. He also said they are trying to get assistance from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Ingram added that authorities have interviewed the missing woman’s mother, who lives in Lumpkin County, and do not suspect foul play based on the interview.
