Without trying to sound crass, given the sad nature of this, if she survives, the risk is she will be like Terri Schiavo-- completely unaware of anything.

Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown was “still alive and breathing” in a hospital Saturday afternoon after being found face down in a bathtub full of water

Nobody knows what caused Brown’s unresponsiveness, Holland said, but police consider it a medical incident at this time. She said investigators had found nothing to indicate it was drug- or alcohol-related.

That ^^^ is what I do not understand. If investigators do not believe it was drug/alcohol related, then why would a 21 yr old be found face down in the morning bath?

From that same link about brain swelling:

"Intracranial hypertension is common after drowning and is strongly associated with a poor outcome [157-159]. Initial cerebral edema is most likely cytotoxic due to energy failure and transit of water into the intracellular compartment. This can contribute to intracranial hypertension and decreased CBF. While CBF improves during the first 24 h after ROSC, cerebral edema worsens as tissue deteriorates"

By and large, when young otherwise healthy adults (we dont know her medical history, maybe seizure disorder?) are found drowned in a tub, it is nearly always drug/alcohol related.

LE may not be able to speculate and in the absence of finding drugs at the scene, may have to state "medical" pending toxicology screens.

The conclusion may be a procedural "just the facts ma'am" statement until further evidence presents itself.

ETA: it may take a few days for the family to realize there is no hope-- to give her time to show if she can pull out (the brain cant regenerate itself though) and for them to take her off life support and then for her body to pass away... So if she isnt going to make it, it could be 3-4 days before it is all settled.

TMZ is now reporting that her father, Bobby Brown, and Tyler Perry have arrived at the hospital.

Without breaching TOS it could mean somebody cleaned the scene, somebody lied to Police, somebody did something to cause a scene to appear the way it did, somebody (Police) is waiting for tox reports, etc. Prelim Police reports from the scene doesn't really mean much right now, IMO.

There have actually been several cases of full recovery from near drowning.
A toddler here was dead for 15 minutes... and is 100% normal.
I don't think it's for us to decide if she is better off dead. :twocents:

I agree Ragamuffin....they didn't get the search warrant until hours later...and I'm sure there could have been some taking care of "things" by a friend once she was taken into the ambulance.

I was thinking that maybe she gets in the tub to "connect" with her mom and have a conversation with her. She has been unresponsive before in the tub. Maybe it is a symbolic way that she connects....poor girl...

A Source on twitter is reporting brain death, but i dont know if its reliable. Has ticked numerous people off...

ETA: the family has confirmed to CNN that she is in a medically induced coma..

Toddlers have a much greater chance of surviving near drowning accidents for a variety of reasons over an adult who was likely in an altered state and doing it deliberately.

But, hey, yes I hope she survives unharmed and goes on to live a long, happy and productive life.

Hmmmm on the rescue call they said she was "gurgling" So either the CPR was moving water out...or she was??

A news reporter (Brad Bessey) just wrote on Twitter that LE has said "if" she dies the announcement will come from her family.

I have had a cardiac arrest 4 years ago, I was in ICU so don't remember anything, I was revived, my chest was black/blue/green from the CPR. It was self inflicted (suicide attempt) so I did not get much sympathy, thank god that era of my life is over.

I think from what i've read she may have brain damage? They aren't giving a lot of info.

So sorry you suffered in more than one way. Shame on those who cared for you that were not compassionate. That is uncalled for and should never happen. I'm glad you are here with us.

I think when EMT puts a breathing tube in, they listen for stomach gurguling to be sure the tube was placed correctly. I could be wrong. They may have been referring to something else..

Link to CNN article confirming medically induced coma:
http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/31/entertainment/whitney-houston-daughter-unresponsive/index.html

Stomach gurgling when oxygen/air is forced into a breathing tube (endotracheal tube) would indicate the tube is not in the correct place and would have to be removed and another attempt would be made for proper placement.

Ah,thanks for correction. Would anything else be worth mentioning gurgling on the emergency dispatches?

  • #78
Couldn't "gurgling" heard after ET placement also indicate fluid in the lungs in a drowning victim, for example, someone found face down in a bathtub?

Short ET video report:

Reports that this incident is being investigated as a potential drug overdose.

I know. I was just wondering if they treat overdoses with this procedure. I know they treat strokes and heart attacks and brain injuries with a medically induced coma at times. Just wondered if they ever did so in cases of an overdose. I guess so, if it resulted in a heart attack or a stroke, perhaps?

I know we do not know if it is drug related. But if someone passes out in the tub, it is often a result of an overdose. Bobbi is a young healthy girl so she should not be having a heart attack or a stroke without something provoking or triggering it, imo.
Personal story: scroll if not interested.
I have a friend whose son overdosed on GHB. Turns out, he had no idea he took it, no idea who gave it to him. (Allegedly) he was found blue on the kitchen floor not breathing and a pulse that could barely be felt about 10 min after coming home one night... He was transported to ER and several hours passed before they figured out what drug he had injested. The parents returned home to look for anything he might have taken. The did find a bottle of Gatorade with condensation on it at his bedside. It was found to have large amounts of GHB in it. He was placed in a medically induced coma due to side effects from the GHB or as a treatment for it. I'm not sure. I know he was having awful seizures and his muscles were clenching up - and not relenting. I believe it was 3 days total. He however was not face down in water when found.
So yes the do put people in medically induced comas for some overdoses...
Just so sad for this family. It has been reported Tyler Perry is with her dad.
*I'm local, but I'll find the link.
I really feel for him.
