BURKE COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – Burke County investigators and the GBI are working to identify human remains found near Briar Creek Bridge.

Officers were called to the 4700 block of Story Mill Road in reference to the remains on Sunday around 1:30 p.m.

WAYNESBORO, GA (WFXG) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Burke County Sheriff’s Office are investigating after possible human remains were found in Brier Creek.

According to the sheriff’s office, two fishermen found a skull and bones in the creek on Sunday, August 11. The remains were found near the creek bank by the Brier Creek Bridge.

Upon arrival, deputies met the two fisherman who said they located a skull and bones near the Briar Creek Bridge.

The remains were collected and taken to the GBI Crime Lab for testing.

The investigation is in its early stages and still ongoing.

According to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, the remains of an Augusta man who was last seen in 2018 have been identified as Tyrone Hughes.

In August of 2019, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office discovered a body in Briar Creek. Through DNA matching, the Center of Human Identification determined the body is Hughes.
