On Wednesday, September 20, 2006, at approximately 11:17 a.m., the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting incident at Jon’s SportPark on Thompson Drive in Douglas, Georgia. Deputies arrived on the scene and found the body of Doris Worrell, age 39, at the scene. She was the victim of an apparent gunshot.

Jon Worrell, the husband of the victim and manager of Jon’s SportPark, left the business at approximately 9:40 a.m. to run errands. His wife remained on the premises engaged in cleaning the business. When her husband returned at approximately 11:15 a.m., he found his wife’s body.

No one has ever been charged with the murder. There has never been a trial. There have, however, been two arrests that went nowhere. But that doesn’t mean matters surrounding the case have been quiet. In fact, quite a bit has happened since that tragic day in 2006...

After Doris’s death, rumors began circulating about possible trouble in the Worrells’ marriage. They appeared to be the perfect couple. That may not have been the case after all...

Another central figure in the case was Paola Yarberry herself. While it was obvious she didn’t pull the trigger – she was seen on video at the time of the shooting – many people believed that she knew a lot more than she was saying. ..

In 2008, Jon Worrell and his children moved to Costa Rica. Interestingly, so did Paola Yarberry. Today, Worrell and Yarberry live together in that country, where they operate several businesses.

Costa Rica has no extradition treaty with the United States.

Surely the Kids have questions about what really happened. Why did Dad take up with Na ny,after Their beautiful loving Mom was murdered. Who is she really anyway. No papers, '15' years old. I bet the aunt kicked her out with good reason, if there even was an aunt in the first place. Wonder how long it will be before someone younger than her comes along, and they turn on each other.

The GBI, Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office are scheduled to hold a news conference on Friday, May 23, 2025, at 10:30 a.m.

The conference will take place at the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, where investigators are expected to release further details about the extensive investigation that led to this long-awaited arrest.

This development offers a glimmer of hope for justice to the family and community affected by Doris Worrell’s untimely death, highlighting the dedication of law enforcement agencies in pursuing even the most challenging cold cases.

Thank you for posting this. This was a very good press conference. I appreciated the professionalism of the officials who spoke & Doris's sister had me in tears. The ripples from these crimes just impact so many things. My heart goes out to Doris's family & especially her children who must be reeling from all this. (And I appreciate that the Coffee County Sheriff said pretty much the same thing that these young adults lost their mom & have now lost their dad.) A huge thanks to all the LE involved through the years.

I hope Robert Preston is on social somewhere so he can be properly thanked. That gentleman pursued this case for a decade plus from that first photo of the crying husband. I’d like to credit him - he’s the journalist mentioned in the press conference - has anyone found him online?

“After another in-depth review of the case, it was decided that investigators would travel to Costa Rica, where Paola eventually cooperated,” the GBI said. “Based on the facts gathered in the early years of the investigation, additional information either learned, confirmed, or corroborated in recent years, along with Paola’s cooperation, investigators were able to obtain arrest warrants for Jon for Doris’ death.”
