GUILTY GA - Gene Siller, 41, Paul Pierson, 76, & Henry Valdez, 46, murdered, Cobb Co, 3 July 2021 *ARREST*

  • #161
I have a question that maybe I just missed when I was reading, but did the truck get stuck on the course? Or did Siller just see it on the course and walked up to see why it was there? I have never worked a golf course so I have no clue how often vehicles drive on greens....is this rare?

As he observed the pickup truck stuck in a sand trap on the 10th hole at Kennesaw’s Pinetree Country Club golf course Saturday afternoon, club member Tom Dowling figured the driver had suffered a medical emergency.

Golf pro Gene Siller volunteered to investigate.

Question from the reporter during the Presser (at 5 min 15 sec mark) may go to explain why LE stated "No risk" to the public. Perp was arrested within hours after the murders for a DUI and was held until released on Tuesday. No risk to the public if your suspect is in a jail on other charges while you investigate.

I wonder if the LE who were holding him on the DUI didn't get the message that he was a suspect and released him ... resulting in the FBI and the Fugitive Task Force then coming in to find and arrest him again - this time for the murders.

The same post says he was released July 6, and during the press conference LE said his name came up in the first couple of days of the investigation. I doubt they knew their suspect was in jail when they said there was no risk to the public.

Makes zero sense.

'Lone shooter' in Cobb County country club triple murder arrested

"A mug shot of Bryan Anthony Rhoden arrested by Chamblee Police Department on July 3, 2021 next to the scene of a triple murder on a Cobb County golf course earlier that same day."

"Golf pro Gene Siller was found shot to death on the green and two others, 46-year-old Henry Valdez, of California, and 76-year-old Paul Pierson, of Kansas, were found dead in the bed of a white Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck teetering on the bank of a sand trap on Saturday afternoon, Cobb County police said. Police identified Pierson and the owner of the truck.

Police believe Siller was not targeted by the suspect but witnessed an active crime leading to his death."

Man charged in Georgia triple murder that included golf pro Gene Siller

Cobb County Police Chief Tim Cox is expected to host a press conference Thursday at 8 p.m. ET in reference to an arrest in the triple homicide, Cobb County Police said earlier.

Arrest made in killing of golf pro Gene Siller, 2 others - WISH-TV | Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

Update 8:13 p.m. EDT July 8: Bryan Anthony Rhoden was charged with three counts of murder, three counts of aggravated assault and two counts of kidnapping, Cobb County Police Chief Tim Cox said in a news conference Thursday evening.

Within hours of the triple murder, Rhoden was arrested by the Chamblee Police Department on unrelated charges, including DUI, driving a vehicle without insurance and false identification, WSB-TV reported. He posted bail on Tuesday.

Cox did not provide any specifics about Rhoden’s arrest or how he was targeted as the suspect.

Golf pro killed at country club was in wrong place at wrong time, police say

Rhoden is being charged with three counts of murder, three counts of aggravated assault and two counts of kidnapping. He is being held in the Cobb County Jail.

Within hours of the murder, Rhoden was arrested by the Chamblee Police Department on unrelated charges, including DUI, driving a vehicle without insurance, false identification and more. He bonded out of the DeKalb County Jail on those charges on Tuesday.

Cobb County Police Chief Tim Cox did not comment on whether or not Rhoden had already been identified as a suspect at that time. He did, however, say that investigators developed Rhoden as a suspect within a few days of the crimes.

OK folks, put this NEW REASON in your pocket for the future. If police say that there is no danger to community, it could be because LE thought he was the guy, and he was IN JAIL! Who would have thought that one!

I guess we will have to wait and see if LE answers why they said there was no risk. They may not have had enough to charge him with the murders at the time and he bonded out before they were able to charge him. Maybe there was a lack of communication between the two LE agencies. I dunno

All of that may be. Aside from eroding trust (IMO) in local law enforcement, if I were a 6’1” Hispanic male living or working in that area, I wouldn’t be happy matching the (now presumably inaccurate) description of a spree killer still on the loose. MOO.

Wow. Perhaps the DUI charge a few hours after the golf course shooting explains his driving and why he chose that strange location. Wondering how he got from Kennesaw to Chamblee if he initially left the scene on foot. They’re prob 25ish miles apart. Maybe he called someone. Just very thankful that he didn't commit another violent crime to get to where he wanted to go.

This is the DeKalb Co Jail site that has his booking info from Rhoden's initial arrest. Note charges of false ID and and acquiring license plate for purpose of concealing ID of vehicle

I thought the nearby university, not LE, is where the suspect description originated? I don’t recall reading a statement from LE that the suspect is 6’1” and Hispanic.

Police still searching for shooter who killed 3 at Kennesaw golf course

Police have only released a very vague description of the suspect. They said the suspect is a Hispanic male wearing a white T-shirt, work pants and possibly a hat. He is 6′1′' and weighs around 170 pounds.

The Cobb County Police Department apparently provided at least some information via news releases, but the last posted release on their website is from June.

Speculation Only: I wonder if he took victim Henry Valdez’s wallet and gave LE Valdez’s ID when he was pulled over. Valdez probably didn’t have ID on him, which is why it took longer to identify him.

Interesting. Here is the link to the court records and copy of sentencing from that Indiana case in case anyone's curious. Looks like he got it down to a misdemeanor after getting initially charged with a felony. It was just filed in May of this year.

Interesting theory. Yes, likely Valdez didn’t have ID on him, but wow that would be pretty brazen for Rhoden to use that ID!

I want to know how their paths crossed in the first place. This story just makes no sense!

yeah I meant an actual statement. I think the article is referring to the university’s description from the alert they sent out. Jmo

I don’t know that I agree — The Atlanta Journal Constitution also reported it as coming from Cobb County LE and included an interesting quote from other local LE.

Kennesaw golf club was ‘thriving’ under slain pro in triple homicide case

As of Monday evening, the shooting suspect was still at large, according to Cobb police, which released few new details about the shootings. Officials described the suspect as about 6-foot-1 with long hair, last seen wearing a white or tan shirt and dark-colored work pants.

Other law enforcement agencies were not involved in the investigation as of Monday. The Kennesaw Police Department said they had not issued a public warning about a shooter loose in the community because “the description of the suspect has been vague,” said spokesman Scott Luther.
(BBM)
Regardless — I’m glad an innocent person wasn’t shot over the vague description. MOO.

ETA: I see now the AJC description doesn’t include “Hispanic.” Now I’m wondering whether AJC pulled that in light of caution from other LE (and racial issues in general) or whether Cobb LE quietly revised the university description. I’m interested from a public affairs perspective, but I doubt we’ll ever know.
