Who is Haralson County Doe (2023)?
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Teams with Othram to Identify a 2023 Doe
In September 2023, partial skeletal remains belonging to an unknown individual were found near Buchanan, Georgia. Buchanan is located in Haralson County near the Georgia/Alabama state line. The discovery was made deep in a forest and there were no clues about the person's identity. The remains consisted of the top portion of a skull, with the lower mandible and other bones missing. Despite investigators' efforts, no identifying information could be determined, including the individual's sex or ancestry.
In late 2023, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation teamed with Othram to determine if advanced DNA testing could help to identify the individual. Othram scientists will work to develop a suitable DNA extract so that a comprehensive DNA profile can be developed for the individual using Forensic Grade Genome Sequencing®. Othram's in-house forensic genetic [sic] genelaogy team will use this profile in a genetic genealogy search.
Anyone with information that could assist in identifying the individual is encouraged to contact the Georgia Bureau of Investigation by calling the GBI Tip Line at 1-800-597-8477 or submitting tips online at gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online. Please reference case number 01-0057-01-24.
A DNASolves® crowdfund has been established to cover the casework costs. Anyone can contribute here.
