When will kids and teens ever learn. Likely never. :(

Five Georgia teens decided to pull off the age-old prank of TPing or "rolling" a house but the typically harmless fun turned deadly when one of them ran over the homeowner who went outside to confront them, cops say.
Jayden Ryan Wallace, 18, stands accused of first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving in the death of 40-year-old Jason Hughes in Gainesville.

His wife is an angel.
But in a shock moment, Laura Hughes, the teacher's wife and fellow educator at North Hall High School, released a statement asking that all charges be dropped.

'This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,' she told the New York Times.

'This would be counter to Jason's lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.'

Laura Hughes said that her husband did not run out to reprimand the group for the annual prank tradition, but he was only 'excited and waiting to catch them in the act.'

She added that the students and Hughes loved each other, and her family fully 'supports getting the charges dropped for all involved.'

I think this quote helps reframe what happened. Its also worth noting that the student that hit him stopped and they tried to help him

In a statement, Laura Hughes, Mr. Hughes’s wife, who is also a teacher at North Hall, said her husband and the students involved loved one another. Mr. Hughes was not going to confront the students but instead “was excited and waiting to catch them in the act,” Ms. Hughes said.

She said the family fully “supports getting the charges dropped for all involved.”

Its also worth noting he tripped and fell into the street before he was struck. I would imagine it all went down in an instant

As Mr. Wallace was leaving in his pickup truck, Mr. Hughes tripped and fell into the street and was run over around 11:40 p.m., the authorities said.
Mr. Wallace and others stopped and tried to administer first aid, the sheriff’s office said. Emergency medical workers arrived and Mr. Hughes was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

I can put myself in that position. My friends and I had that relationship with our teachers. Or in my case, the school superintendent. In my case, he didn't bust me until graduation day.

Such a sad, tragic situation all around. I say again, his wife is an angel.

In a statement, the family said, “We are thankful for the outpouring of prayers and support as we grieve the loss of Jason. We ask that you continue to pray for our family and also for the students involved in the accident along with their families. Please join us in extending grace and mercy to them as Christ has done for us.”

Offering forgiveness is his Wife's way to honor Jason's legacy, rather than letting his tragic death define them. Beautiful display of true Christianity, I'm sure the kids are devastated.

Can anyone please explain the prank? I’ve not heard of it in UK

TPing or "rolling" is to take a roll of toilet paper and repeatedly throw it over a tree (or any structure) until the paper runs out. You can find videos of it on YT.

This really is such a sad story. These weren't bad kids targeting a teacher. It was a known junior and senior prank war and apparently they got extra points for "rolling" teachers. There were some established rules like no eggs, no paint, no weapons, etc. Nothing that destroyed property. Hence, the tp. They likely chose a teacher they liked and who liked them, who was in on it. The roads had been wet from rain and the teacher slipped in the street. The students who hit him immediately stopped and tried to render aid until help arrived. The kids are devastated. The teacher's family doesn't want charges against the kids. I don't know that it serves any purpose.

Extremely encouraging update. This was nothing more than a tragic accident, and charging those kids is not something the victim would want, the family wants, or something those kids need. They'll live with this forever.

"The Hughes family is adamant the incident was a tragic accident and fully support dropping the charges against the teenage students.

District attorney Lee Darragh told ABC News he is reviewing the case and will give "great deference" to the Hughes family's wishes.

All five students have since been released on bond.

Wallace is scheduled for a court appearance on April 1 but Darragh said he expects to make a decision before the hearing."

CHARGES DROPPED

📍Hall County Georgia

Following mounting public pressure and requests from the victim’s family, the DA overseeing the case in the homicide of Jason Hughes, a math teacher at North Hall County High School has dropped all criminal charges according to the attorney of the teenager who was charged by the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

This is the statement sent from the Wallace family’s attorney |

“Jayden Wallace and his family first want to thank Laura Hughes for her remarkable compassion and spirit of forgiveness in the face of the tremendous loss of her husband, Jason Hughes.

As the family’s attorney, I join them in thanking the District Attorney’s office of the Northeastern Judicial Circuit for completing a thorough investigation and for the prompt decision to dismiss all criminal charges against Jayden and the other students who were present.

District Attorney Lee Darragh was able to act swiftly because the facts and circumstances are not in dispute.

Jayden and his friends were participating in a competitive game outside the home of their beloved teacher as part of a longtime junior-senior tradition at North Hall High School.

As he was leaving the home, Jayden never saw Mr. Hughes, and Jayden’s vehicle had only traveled a few feet when the accident occurred.

Vehicular Homicide charges were not warranted because Jayden never operated his truck in a dangerous, improper, or unsafe manner. In the end, there was no crime – only an extremely sad and devastating accident.

Jayden is still grieving deeply but is determined to move forward eventually to live a life that would make Jason Hughes proud.

The Wallace family would also like to thank the North Hall community for the prayers and loving support that have been offered to the Hughes and Wallace families.

Parents Jeremy and Kristen Wallace, along with their son Jayden, also encourage donations to the GoFundMe account established for the Hughes family as well as your continued prayers for Laura Hughes and her children.”

I sure hope they take the wife's wishes into account. I also think they should take Jason's own actions into account. He was not outside to "catch" them because they were vandalizing his home or to punish them or something like that. He was outside to catch them as part of the prank and the students had no way to know he was even outside let alone near the road. He was participating in this fun prank and he fell. Had he not fallen, he wouldn't be run over, and he would have likely just shown them he was there and they were "caught". This is nothing more than an accident and I do think it matters that the teacher was in on it. He wasn't standing in the roadway and the students knowingly hit him to get away. I think they charged way to fast and should have investigated first and waited to charge them.

So happy to see this. This young man is going to need lots of help to get over this. Putting him in jail would not bring Jason back and it wouldn't teach anyone a lesson because nothing was done with malice, intent or even knowledge that it could happen. He had no idea Jason was even outside so how could be know driving away could kill him? I hope these kids get some therapy and find a way to honor Jason and move forward.

Love the speed and the fact there was no attempt to "split the baby," and all of the charges were dropped.
