This part is concerning:
victim 'believed to be unarmed' ran towards the car to confront them.

I see them admitting to the vandalism... but saying she was terrified the victim was coming to hurt her/them and thought he was armed.

Not going to work but only hope IMO.

Could it be that the victim was doing well and moving forward and the ex was jealous and didn't want to see him happy in a new life?

It sounds/looks like all 3 suspects didn't care if they hurt someone. Three toxic miserable people got together to take their emptiness out on a victim.
