It's just so heartbreaking that this case has not been solved, honestly I thought it would be solved very quickly. I truly hope that it is a question of time and that there is just tons of video footage and other information to sort through, and not that this killer was lucky enough or clever enough to not leave any video or DNA evidence.

Keeping Katie, Bowie and their loved ones in my prayers.

My sentiments exactly!

On the issue of DNA, they may have a useable sample or samples but there is no match in the system for a known suspect. In an earlier thread it was discussed when and on which crimes Georgia collects (or doesn't collect ) DNA from arrestees. Iirc misdemeanor arrests (and maybe even some convictions?) don't allow DNA samples to be collected, and iirc again there might be certain felonies that can only take an individual's DNA if convicted.

All of this to point our that just because we aren't seeing visible progress and don't have an arrest doesn't mean no DNA.

Is anyone aware of any crimes committed recently where genetic genealogy has been used to successfully help identify a suspect? I only hear about cold cases that have been solved this way.

I see a 15yo that burglarized an elderly woman last year got arrested for it, found via genealogy. A year is the quickest turn around I've seen, I think.

Police arrest girl, 15, in 'brutal' Lake Oswego assault

found on the wiki list for cases solved this way.

Thank you so much for this.

Good to know it IS being used for current cases.

The turnaround time is not surprising as the use of Parabon has increased exponentially in the last couple of years.

I'll definitely keep the case you cited in mind for all yet-to-be solved crimes .. as a worst case scenario when other investigative avenues aren't fruitful for LE, this will keep hope alive for families.

''A federal corrections officer in Atlanta was pistol-whipped and had his pit bull puppy stolen from him by a man he had picked up earlier that evening. According to local Fox affiliate WAGA TV, the assault and theft took place in the early morning hours of August 29. Police are investigating the matter and believe the suspect may be targeting the trans community in the area, as the victim was wearing a dress at the time of the incident.''

I checked a little earlier this evening hoping I'd missed news of an arrest in this case... or least some progress. :(

I check the news every day, just for something. But there's nothing, at this point it doesn't even seem like the silence is intended. Doesn't seem like there are any leads.

Wow! This could definitely be a connection. Too coincidental that both had pit bulls and were LGBTQ. Maybe Bowie put up a fight that the killer didn't appreciate? I still think it's more likely to be a SK type than a thief, because of the signature, but who knows at this point.

We need some more info, APD!

''While pointing the gun at his victim's head, the suspect allegedly told them to "get on the ground" and threatened to kill them.

After a short struggle in which the victim was hit in the face and arm. The repeated blows to the head required the victim to get seven stitches and caused four facial fractures.''

''As police continue their search, this victim is warning others to be careful.
"Be smarter in your decisions. Use your better judgment. When your first mind tells you don’t, don’t," the man said.
Police and the victim believe the suspect could strike again.''
"I don’t think it was his first time at all. I think he is going to do it again. I just hope he’s not dumb enough to do it here again because now I’m ready for him," the victim said.

If you have any information that could help police identify the suspect or find the missing dog, please call 911 or Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS (8477).''

Thank you for sharing. It's interesting that there are details in this article that I haven't seen elsewhere. Included in those details is reporting of EC taking her "bike" to go look for Katie. Very interesting after watching the video @AtlantaBourne posted above.

I guess I was wrongly assuming EC was in a vehicle. Makes perfect sense that the bike would be dropped nearby after what she found if it was hers.

Clark took off on her bike and arrived at the park’s 10th Street gate around 1 a.m. Once inside, she saw Janness’s pit bull, Bowie, motionless on the ground. About 50 feet away lay Janness, dead.

I think we all wrongly assumed EC was in a vehicle because of the article below, but upon rereading it, I realize it was not a direct quote.

EXCLUSIVE: Partner of woman killed in Piedmont Park speaks about victim's final moments
Clark says she used the 'Find my Phone' app to locate Janness’ phone. She says it pinged to Piedmont Park and was not moving, which concerned her considering Janness was walking the dog. Clark says she left her home and began driving around familiar routes that she thought Janness would take. She says she then went to the park and made the gruesome discovery that Janness had been mutilated and their dog killed as well.
