Yes I also have wondered this about the phone ringing. Emma must have called and texted her several times immediately upon discovering Katie wasn’t home. Probably several calls and texts in a row. I wonder if that could have interrupted the killer’s postmortem plans and they fled.

I not only wondered about the phone ringing, etc. but also added to that...
To the killer, possibly the phone becomes active for several minutes, then 10-15 minutes later, a man comes running down 10th St., with a bright light on top of his head(the jogger), & turns left into the CA entrance running straight toward where Bowie was found.
If the killer was there when the jogger ran in, the killer may have thought the jogger knew KJ & was looking for KJ & B & this caused the killer to flee. Just speculation though. I also speculate that the jogger was very lucky that night.

If it's an iPhone, the basic location feature does nothing on the phone to light the display or play any sounds. But you can opt to play a sound on the phone to help find it. The sound plays even if the phone is on silent.
But prior to the attempt to use the location services, i'd think there would have been calls or texts which may have only been on vibrate, that I don't think has even been mentioned.

11:35 pm - Katie departs after visiting Emma's workplace
12:09 am - Katie is seen on the rainbow crosswalk with Bowie about to enter Piedmont Park
12:25 am - guy with walking cane exits park
12:35 am - Emma stated she left work about an hour after Katie's visit
12:46 am - that jogger in green was passing near the CS exiting the Park
01:11 am - 911 was called by Emma

Via public records (which can contain errors) I found a 39 y/o SW (listed as a/k/a SLW and SLW Jr.) associated with at least four shelter addresses--two in Philadelphia and one in Atlanta.

It does not show the older man with the same name to be associated with those shelter addresses. But some time ago both men shared a P.O. box in Lake Monroe, FL.

She had earbuds, right? So IMO she probably had her phone hooked up to blue tooth. So even if it was ringing or pinging or whatever, it would be really quiet since the sound would be coming from the ear buds.

This tweet from CBS46 in AUG 2021 states the largest homeless camp is next to Buckhead. My SIL lived in Buckhead during the late '90s. I'm quite sure the homeless did not camp near there, at that time. The upper scale Buckhead area is a mere 4.5 miles South to Piedmont Park or 1.5 hours walk.

Residents of 'The Hill' call it a city within a city, complete with power, shower, and even a barber." 30 to 40 people reside in the small tent city called 'The Hill'.

Obviously, I am using the wrong browser. Thanks for finding/posting this news bite. So, the answer is yes, Midtown does have homeless camps that are dismantled every couple of months. We need a timeline of SLWs whereabouts so we can put this potential POI to bed. Bueller?

The videos found in the report mentioned fires which reminded me that ECs father said during ECs exclusive and brave interview with cbs46 on JULY 29, 2021, that the couple, EC and KJ, had lost their stuff in a home fire before moving to the place they lived when KJ met her death.

Is there anything suspicious about their home fire we should be discussing that may pertain to Katie's demise?
While I can't begin to put myself in her situ, EC does not cry, nor tear up, during the entire 23 minute interview. Anhedonia can flatline a person's emotions. Sjogren's syndrome, usually develops while in the 30s, can prevent one from the ability to cry due to dry eyes.

I’ve been looking into the Atlanta cold cases and I found the case of Patrick Boland. I know his case has been brought up in the #2 thread for this case. I wonder if the police compared the two cases. Possibly someone targeting people that are classified as lesbian or gay? One occurred in 2009 and one occurred in 2021. He was 43 and she was 40. The killer could have escalated due to some trigger or pent-up rage.

On the other hand it could have been EC. One of the reports said the crime had “familiarity”, meaning that the killer was familiar with the victim. In addition, the word “FAT” carved on her could also suggest that someone was scorned. I agree with those who have mentioned EC’s lack of emotion in her interview. Although, everyone grieves on their own time and in their own way.

Although, I still feel this was possibly a younger person or a person with cognitive delay. Due to the way she was stabbed and sliced, it almost seemed “experimental” in a way. Unless the killer made it seem that way in order to throw off the police.

These are my opinions based on the nature of the crime.

The idea about her wounds suggesting the killer was "experimenting" is interesting. When I read the autopsy report, it made me wonder if the killer was in a state of compulsion. It seemed like a lot of the injuries were anatomically centered, targeted, or following structural lines. It's so creepy.

My thoughts are similar. It’s almost like the person was taking what they learned from anatomy class and applying it to the murder. I found it interesting that the killer seemed to hit the vital organs and arteries. A number of those wounds could have killed her, but the killer continued. Another thing that struck me was that she was cut open like a deer, from her xiphoid process to her mons pubis. This is how you gut a deer, well you cut to the anus on a deer, but her injury was very similar. Ed Gein slit his victims open like that.

Any speculation on why CSI was removing a large tree branch from the CS?

Why would KJ willingly enter the PP so late at night while knowing all the while that it was officially closed for the evening? KJ was off work all day on Tuesday so I don't understand her doing all of this walking at and around midnight.

I have always speculated that KJ walked Bowie down the path parallel to 10th St. There are houses & apts on the other side of 10th.
I can't determine if they entered PP at Piedmont & 11th, Piedmont & 12th, the 12th St main entrance or the small 10th St entrance near Argonne Ave & 10th. IMO, after doing google street views, there are several cameras in these areas on residential & business bldgs. LE may know where they went after the rainbow xwalk from these cameras, IMO.
I also speculated the killer initially snatched Bowie's leash from KJ & jogged away w/him, luring her further into the park.
(I think what I would do & think if someone did that to me & how my friendly dog would react--a weird joke or some stupid drunk. I couldn't just let someone take my dog ((my GF's dog)) wo doing anything).
I considered that Bowie was tied to the limb that was collected by LE & the killer walked out of view behind the RR bldg.
I speculate when KJ caught up & found Bowie ok, she might have been relieved & possibly started untying the leash. Then the killer attacked from behind.
Because of KJ's & EC's work schedules it was normal for them to walk the dog(s?) late at night. This is according to EC in the Channel46 news interview on 7/29/21.

But this is just my theory on what may have happened.

How low on the tree was the branch LE took? What kind of tree, and was it in full foliage or even dead? Did/can any WS locals see where on the tree it had been, if it’s not too high up?

Could the killer have been perched in the tree? Could B have been tethered to it, or worse? Did they find leaves or bark on KJ or B?

Their removal of a branch as evidence suggests premeditated killing to me.

Pic of Atl PD loading limb in CSI van. No verifiable reports of whether the limb was attached to the tree or laying on the ground. It appears to be from a pine tree & is not brown IMO.

@fanged1 interesting correlation between the knife cuts and anatomy classes. The juvenile arrested in Miami for the "Cat Killings", stated he was doing it for anatomy classes. Until that was suppressed, as he did not have an attorney present.

I still think that LEO should keep an eye on that guy. He pretty much fit every profile for "serial killer" wannabe.
