Interesting that the 24 year old son has access so quickly and can monitor his dad's checking account activity. Does he share a joint account with dad? I have college kids that still live with me, but they could not go online and access my household accounts. I can see the bank giving LE the info. But the son sounded like he accessed that info on his own. Interesting.
My daughter who lives with me has my account access, in case there is something that goes wrong. She is not on the account but has every thing she needs to be able to check my accounts and even transfer cash if necessary.

I don't consider it unusual for his adult son to have access to his bank accounts. Having a joint account holder allows money to be accessed in the event of an emergency. From the age of 16 until my mother remarried I was a joint account holder on all her bank accounts. When I was 16 she worked long hours to support my brother and I - she needed help with household management. I did all the grocery shopping and weekly trips to the laundry mat. We reviewed and paid bills together as well. Even after I was married I remained an account holder on her accounts for emergency purposes. When my mother remarried, my step-dad became the joint account holder instead of me. It makes perfect sense to me (providing that you fully trust the joint account holder).

There is a difference to me, between being a joint account holder, in case of an emergency. You can go to the bank or call and get info. Having all the passwords, security question answers, etc., which is pretty extensive for my online banking, seems odd to me. There is no reason he needs all that unless he has equal access to spending the money. I am a great believer in after hs or college, barring mental/physical problems, in kids being up & out and independent. I even question why he is 24 & still living as a 16-17 year old at home but appearing as an equal to his father, accessing his personal finances, etc. But that is just how I was raised and see things.

I work at a bank and there are a lot of people who have their adult children as a joint owner on their bank accounts. Because of potential legal issues with having a joint account, I recommend a POA, but a lot of people don't bother with that and proceed with a joint account.

As far as a 24 year old living at home, this has become more of the norm in areas with high housing costs.

Forgive my ignorance...what is a POA?

I have two theories. The first is that he met someone and they did something to him. It could have been a Craigslist seller/buyer. It also could have been a former student. The second theory is the more obvious and most common one. And I wonder if he had been married. Is there any mention of a wife?

Power of Attorney

Most often, people don't think of the issues with having a joint account with a non-spouse.

For example - dad & son joint owners but for the most part, dad is the primary user. If son has any court ordered judgements the account could be seized. If son passes away, 1/2 of the funds could be subject to inheritance tax. If dad passes, the account funds bypass any estate plans dad may have wanted (split equally among kids) and belongs 100% to surviving owner of the account. Son could take all the funds legally and close the account.

A Power of Attorney appoints an agent for the individual. The agent can do many different functions but the funds do not belong to the agent which bypasses a lot of the legal issues of a joint account. An agent has the duty to only transact the the principal's interests.

Good info to know. Thanks!

Again, I get the joint account holder in case of emergency. It is how the son described being able to access online every detail. That is another level of the child pushing to be treated as an equal while living as a dependent or a parent who could not hold any boundary with a child, allowing him access to his whole private life. Like Mr. Bolden could not let go of his son and allowed him to be equal in his household so he would not leave.
As in any potential crime, I always ask, who benefits from Mr. Bolden being missing, not found, while still employed v. retired or found deceased. A brother, an ex-spouse, a child, a lover? This will be interesting.

LARRY BOLEN UPDATE: This was just released from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (Georgia). No new leads were found during the search last week.
------
On Thursday February 11, 2016, an organized team gathered at Hunter Park in Douglasville to conduct a follow up search for the missing 62 year old Douglas County teacher, Larry Bolen. Mr. Bolen was last seen by family in May of 2015 at his home in Douglasville. His vehicle was later found at Hunter Park several days later, unoccupied. Previous searches of this area during that time did not reveal any leads to Mr. Bolen’s whereabouts. Over the months that followed, investigators continued communicating with family and the public trying to develop new leads. Several tips were received and leads were followed up on yielding no viable results.

This search under the command of Lieutenant Sharon Carroll and Sergeant Susan Sweat consisted of nearly 100 participants from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Douglasville City Police Department, the Douglas County Fire Department as well as volunteers from several K-9 and Mounted Horse search and rescue teams from different areas of Georgia. The search took place over the course of the day where organized teams searched nearly 500 acres of wooded and open areas of property around the park. The decision was made at the end of the day that the search had covered all the best probable areas, sometimes even twice.

This search also did not yield any leads to Mr. Bolen’s whereabouts and the case will remain open pending any new leads or information that arises. Again, any information on the whereabouts of Larry Bolen can be called into the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Missing person cases in general are something I'm very passionate about and I have a HUGE list of 'older' cases that I try to check on updates for at least twice a week or so. I get so frustrated when there is nothing new because it seems as if they've simply been forgotten (although I know this isn't really the case). It's always reassuring to see new searches being conducted or an update!

Back on topic though, being a teacher and the same age as my mother, Mr. Bolen is always in the back of my mind. Hoping for the best possible outcome of course, but if my fears for him are realized, I hope those responsible pay dearly.

Hambrick said the identification is based on evidence found at the scene with the remains along I-20 a mile west of Highway 5 on the eastbound side of the interstate.

Two teens were walking through the woods late Wednesday night after dark and found what they believed to be human remains, Hambrick said. The sheriff’s office secured the scene Wednesday night and started working at daylight Thursday to recover evidence at the scene.
Hambrick said he would not elaborate on the personal items found, but that they alone gave the sheriff’s office confidence the remains were those of Bolen.

Hambrick said some of Bolen’s family had been notified Thursday, but he wasn’t sure which family members or what was said.

Hambrick said the remains will be sent to the GBI Crime Lab. He said he didn’t know how long the remains might have been where they were found.

“To be honest, the evidence that we’ve located is pretty conclusive,” Hambrick said. “So if they (GBI) review our evidence, they may not do DNA testing. They may agree. But we give them the option and the opportunity to do that. They will be sent to the GBI — last investigative update I have — and then let them make a decision what they do from there. “

Hambrick said the sheriff’s office has no reason to believe foul play was involved in part because of the way Bolen disappeared.

I wonder how far from Hunter Park, where his car was found, is the location where he was found. Does anyone have an idea?
