Lashawn Thompson was allegedly eaten alive by bugs in his Atlanta jail cell while awaiting trial for a June 2022 misdemeanor simple battery charge, according to his family's attorney.

Now, the 35-year-old's family is calling for the closure of the Fulton County Jail, as well as a criminal investigation into Thompson's death.

"People like him get neglected. His parents are deceased. No wife, no kids. His family's not from Atlanta, so they weren't here while he was here to keep up with him. But they got the call that he had died in the jail," attorney Michael Harper of the Harper Law Firm told Fox News Digital on Thursday.

Jail officials placed Thompson in the psychiatric wing after determining he had schizophrenia, Harper said. The attorney shared several extremely graphic photos of Thompson and the filth he allegedly died in at the detention facility in a Wednesday press release.

that filth is not acceptable for anyone, much less a person with schizophrenia in there for a minor charge
why was he even in there? they post bail for much worse crimes
unless he had other worse priors

That photo alone is unacceptable.

"These cells are horrible and not fit for an animal. Mr Thompson had not even been convicted - he was being held until his trial day.'

The scene was so horrific that the detention officer said she would not even administer CPR when they found him because she was, in her words, freaked out by the scene."

:(

Wait, what?

An employee was unaware of the conditions?

Huh?

There should be criminal charges in this case. People need to do jail time for causing this man's death. No parents, no family, no one to advocate for him so officials do whatever they want because he's mentally ill.

This is no better than if he'd had dementia or was elderly and couldn't speak and was abused in this way because he couldn't fight back.

May he rest in peace after all the BS he endured during his short life on Earth and may the people who left and kept him in that filth pay the price.

Family members of a former Georgia inmate found dead in a filthy jail cell “not fit for a diseased animal” after being “eaten alive by insects and bedbugs” are calling for a criminal investigation into his death and the closure of the beleaguered Fulton County Jail where he was housed.

Lashawn Thompson, 36, who family members said had schizophrenia, died in a cell in the psychiatric wing of one of the country’s largest lockups based in Atlanta. He died on Sept. 13, three months after his arrest on a misdemeanor battery charge, said family lawyer Michael Harper.

That photo looks like something from a post-apocalyptic/horror video game, not something anyone should be proud to see happening in America (or anywhere), no matter how “tough on crime” one may be.

This is an interesting read. Article states that jailers had expressed concerns about his well-being in the days before his death. A report on the unit housing mentally ill persons decried the conditions as well.

However, COD has not been determined. I’ve never heard of bedbugs killing someone. Where was his family the past three months?

Was he denied bail? He was booked on a misdemeanor 3 mos ago…has history of arrests.

Sensational article but I believe there’s a lot more to this story and I’m not sure it’s concern for the deceased that is the motivating factor.

Mr. Thompson's family lives in Alabama. They did not know he had been arrested or detained in Georgia. He died in September 2022, 3 months after he was arrested. The family found out only when they were notified of his death.

Public records obtained by Harper's law office apparently show that detention officers and medical staff at the jail noticed Thompson's deterioration — including an infection from bedbugs and lice on his torso — while he was still alive but did nothing to aid him.

Well not administering CPR if needed is not acceptable.

I don't know if there's a thread but apparently there's a Federal lawsuit regarding Joshua McLemore's death in an Indiana jail.
Both cases are cruel and horrendous but Thompson's death seems even worse.

Federal lawsuit filed in case of man who died after spending 20 days in solitary confinement at Indiana jail
Wow, that was a disturbing read as well! How could that have even happened? He didn’t even do anything to warrant an arrest, did he?
Would you be ok if I started a thread on this? I didn’t see one.

What is happening to the USA?
We are killing one another almost every day.
Often, there is NO reason.

Kids at school are no longer safe.

Parents murder their children, children murder their parents.

Kids bully their peers until kids see suicide as the only option.

Now, we put mentally ill people in cells that look like remnants of Chernobyl while they are literally eaten alive by BUGS.

What will happen to any and all of us?

If we have yet to be included as a statistic, it is just a matter of time before it happens to someone that we know and love, or even to US.

Lord, we need action before it's too late.
