UPDATE | Investigators: false alarm at suspicious scene on Golden Camp Road

http://www.wrdw.com/content/news/De...cial&utm_source=facebook_WRDW_News_12_WAGT_26

I hope this recent find isn't another false alarm. The first quote above is from when they found the tortoise in the toolbox. It was on the same road.

Thinking of Janell and hoping for an update soon.

“Remains will likely take months to identify”

“What appears to have been human remains found in a wooded area of the 2200 block of Golden Camp Road in Augusta could take months to identify, according to Richmond County authorities.

Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said the office plans to ‘get the job done’ as soon as possible.

‘A few months at the very least,’ he said as authorities from Richmond and Columbia counties and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation worked to recover the remains Friday. ‘We’re just hoping we could find out who it is, and if it is a criminal case, we’re hoping to help get some justice served.’

The remains were found about 3:57 p.m. Thursday after a homeowner found what appeared to be a bone protruding from a shallow grave behind a residence.

By noon Friday, Alice Gooding, a Kennesaw State University anthropologist contracted by the GBI, had begun work with the Richmond County sheriff’s and coroner’s offices to remove the remains from the site.

Sheriff’s Lt. Glen Rahn estimated the remains to be 100 yards from the home. He said the grave seemed as if it was intentionally dug but he was uncertain whether additional evidence, such as clothing, would be found.” (BBM)

Smith has been living in this community for her entire life. She says it's more than a coincidence that these investigators are here searching for human remains just a block down the street from where they were last year.

"The fact that they were in this same area June of last year in the same vicinity, they were parked right here and it was full," Smith explains.
Neighbors called about a strange odor at that time in 2017. Rumors circulated on social media that the smell could be the body of missing 16-year-old Latania Janell Carwell but it ended up being a dead animal in a toolbox. Carwell lived near the area and is among more than 10 people missing in Augusta according to Sheriff's Department. Investigators told FOX 54 bones were found approximately 100 yards behind the home.
"It's in the part where there's a wooden section. It's not like landscaped or anything so it's not something that would have easily been seen," says Lt. Glen Rahn with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. The Forensic Anthropologist will send the remains to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta where there's no set timetable for identification.
"Usually DNA runs a year to 14 months, I have other avenues which I am going to check out to try and speed this up," says Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen.
Bowen says there are other methods that can take 2 to 4 months he wants to be able to give an accurate description of who is this person but nothing is set in stone right now. "Somebody's loved one is here, we have to give them closure."

Well I sure hope they keep the so called 'mom' locked up while they wait for DNA results. I really think she should be locked up, perhaps forever. :jail:

I wonder if the deceased animal was a decoy? Sick, but effective.

Can someone refresh my memory of when Janell's mom was arrested? Was she in jail when the false alarm tortoise in a toolbox incident occurred last year? I seem to recall there were news fb live videos of family and friends gathering on Golden Camp Rd. Everyone was sure that was going to be Janell and people were crying, etc.. What I'm getting at is, is there video of her mom's reactions last year? If this turns out to actually be Janell those videos from last year may be very telling, IMO.

Very close to "last seen" from flyers.

RBBM for focus:
"Deputies say after a bystander spotted the stepfather, Leon Tripp, in Atlanta by the Stop'N'Shop on Lee Street, alone, investigators issued the arrest warrant for Tripp on kidnapping charges.

Investigators say the bystander positively identified the cross tattoo in the middle of Tripp's forehead." (BBM)

Though I have not read anything to that effect, maybe LE was able to verify the witness's claim by reviewing CCTV footage as well.

The tattoo is kind of hard to miss. This is exactly why this case needs more MSM coverage: The more people know what LaTania and Leon look like, the more likely they will be found sooner rather than later, IMO.

Just bumping this in case it's relevant again.
Still looking for whether mum was at tortoise episode

Uhhh I think this article has been updated ? because no one is talking about this yet...

"During the investigation, it was revealed that Tanya Faye Tripp (the biological mother of missing teen Latania Carwell) was in contact with Leon Tripp and had recently moved to the Atlanta area to be with Leon Tripp.

Tanya has now been arrested for Hindering the Apprehension of a Criminal."

Bumping forward - Mother arrest

Thank you for finding that! So she was arrested in May. The Tortoise incident was in June. So scratch my theory about her reaction on the scene. This also means that neither Leon nor Tanya could have planted the dead turtle in the toolbox as a diversion (unless they had an accomplice). It was likely coincidence the turtle was found there, MOO.

Your mentioning of their reaction though made me wonder how great it would have been to be a fly on the wall in those cells that day !
