Superior Court Judge Michael N. Annis has announced he is resigning his judgeship effective Feb. 1.

Annis presides over criminal and civil cases. He is currently appointed to preside over the death penalty case of Leon Tripp who along with his wife, Tanya Tripp, is accused of murder in the death of his step-daughter Latania Janell Carwell. Her mother, Tonya Tripp, reported her missing April 17, 2017, her 16th birthday.
Her remains were found in a shallow grave in March 2018. Leon Tripp faces a possible death sentence if convicted.
Annis’ replacement will complete his current term of office, which ends Dec. 31, 2020. The state Constitution will give his replacement until 2022 before he must run for election.

The skipped part just says the judge asked the governor to appoint a replacement. The judge was up for re-election in 2020 anyway. He asked to work part time until his successor is chosen. He is one of 8 Superior Court Judges of the Augusta Judicial Circuit. It does not say why the judge is stepping down early. He has been on the bench for 16 years. It also does not mention if this will delay the case longer but I imagine it might... MOO.

This case infuriates me. Mainly because I think it is not an abnormal situation in that nothing is happening. 
Edited to add: I realize this case has no progress mainly because the person who would normally be seeking justice (i.e., victim's mother), has a role in her death.

As far as I know - they both have a $500K bond, and I haven't seen anywhere that they posted that. So I would say - yes, they are in jail.
