Mercer professor reflects on McDaniel's guilty plea

..."No one wanted to jump to any conclusions too soon." Charlotte Thomas, a professor of Philosophy, reflects back three years ago when she learned Mercer student Stephen McDaniel was arrested in connection with the murder of another student, Lauren Giddings. ...

...Thomas teaches the Great Books Program that McDaniel was a member of and says she never noticed anything that would suggest he was capable of murder. ...

I am so relieved for Lauren's family. Just so da*n relieved ! Thank you, Lord.

I just can't believe this. I had to triple check the thread title. Wow. This is so great.

I am stunned

I know it's the natural progression for cases to be moved as they are resolved, but I feel like Lauren's case is in the janitor's closet behind the broom.

Wow! That's very unfair, Knox.

I've been reading the conversation about SM in prison. I don't think he will do well at all. In Bibb County jail, he has been separated from other inmates. I just don't think the state prison system will keep him separated from other prisoners. IMO, he will not handle general population well. True, prisons are filled with murderers. I've been told that prisoners have a strong dislike for child molesters and other inmates whose crimes are abhorrent. He will probably have some cred as a jailhouse lawyer, but he will also probably suffer in ways he cannot imagine.
He will stay at Jackson for a couple of months while they evaluate him and decide in which prison facility he will spend his years.

If he goes to GSP or Rogers, he will be very close to my home.

That's a whole new article pearl has linked here, folks:

McDaniel leaves Bibb jail for Jackson prison

http://www.13wmaz.com/story/news/crime/giddings-case/2014/04/22/mcdaniel-leaves-bibb-jail/8023435/

...and from your link, pearl:

...Cooke also said he's preparing the case file on the McDaniel case for release to the public and the news media, but could not say when it would be available. 13WMAZ has requested a copy of that file. ...
I am very glad to hear we may get some more answers yet.

bessie, I kind of feel the same way Knox does, but I don't think either of us (speak up if I'm wrong, Knox) means any criticism...we know that's just the natural progression on WS as things develop. It just FEELS so weird. I remember feeling disoriented in a similar way when Lauren's threads were first moved out of "Located".

But Knox -- check the forums home page: Lauren has a banner there. It says:

CONFESSION IN THE MURDER OF LAUREN GIDDINGS! CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT MORE
...and the link leads to the Breaking News post bessie made.

So, for now, it's a well-marked broom closet, LOL.

Tomcat, that solves the mystery of the long stick McD was seen with by the renter's girlfriend. We sure didn't think that was what it was used for did we?

No for sure! I guess be leary of weird looking guys carrying long sticks even if you are on the second floor!! I think I and others maybe, thought of everything BUT that, but Backwoods was onto that second floor window and him lurking, I guess if SM has been honest, we can assume he didnt' use that stick for anything else, either way, the outcome was bad

Everybody remembers Greg Winters, right? The former DA:

McDaniel ‘thought he was gonna beat it,’ former DA says

Defense attorney fears McDaniel will be a target in prison

...“Do I think he thought he was gonna beat it? Yeah,” said former Bibb County District Attorney Greg Winters, who first brought charges against McDaniel.

“I think he thought he was gonna be able to find a way out, and he couldn’t.” ...

I am pleased Lauren's family have been spared going to trial but I sincerely hope this monster is never released. He will never be rehabilitated or fit to go back into the community ever again. Obviously he is a very intelligent but very dangerous individual. I hope the parole board see sense and never release him 30 years from now and beyond. Clearly he could still murder and commit more evil acts in his sixties if released.

It is not often I can relate personally to the victims of cases here but I am nearly 30 like Lauren would have been and have a degree in Human Resources and Law. Lauren also loved animals so much like me from the photos I have seen in articles. Her family and dog must miss her so much. It is very sad Lauren never got the chance to graduate, have a great career and of course a family of her own. Lauren's family are in my prayers tonight.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Lauren's case and cared that this monster was found guilty. I haven't contributed much to the discussion here but I always checked in from time to time to see what was happening.

Here is a link to the new Daily Mail article about the confession and him pleading guilty in court

"The family of a murdered 27-year-old Georgia student listened to her killer confess to the moment she ripped off the mask he was wearing and recoiled in horror as she recognized her friend before he strangled her to death.

Mercer University School of Law graduate Stephen McDaniel, 28, pleaded guilty to the June 2011 murder of fellow student Lauren Giddings, 27, in court on Monday and provided a full confession as part of his deal.

As the Giddings family broke down in tears, McDaniel's coolly detailed confession of how he startled Lauren awake at 4.30am on Sunday June 26 after he broke into her apartment dressed all in black was read to the court."

I don't think we ever knew for sure, either, bessie.

Maybe the dogs alerted, maybe not -- maybe Golba just used his noggin and figured it was a likely spot...?

it went to a different landfill than BH, maybe it was picked up on an earlier day than the BH trash was picked up, SM stated that the torso had been in the BH trash for a few days or named a date prior to the actual pickup date

I know there was discussion here about what days and how many trash pickups there were in a week in the area.

Maybe he did just use his noggin

maybe there wasn't anything left but bone, would the scent dogs pick up as easily then (at the dump or in the dumpster) and would the dumpster have still held a scent?

I know the dogs have been discussed in length as well

Potential jurors in Henry County are probably breathing a sigh of relief about now. Coverage from there -- (which also includes a recap of another Mercer-related murder that received a lot of media coverage, as I recall, and was moved from Monroe Co. to Henry Co.):

Killer avoids Henry County trial with guilty plea

A former Mercer University law school graduate accused in the 2011 strangulation death and dismemberment of a fellow graduate and neighbor pleaded guilty to murder Monday ahead of his scheduled trial in McDonough. ...

I read back a ways but I didnt' see anything in regards to this except the mention of LG Bday on the 18th

Any chance SM waited or was waiting until LG bd or close to confess or did it all just happen to play out this close to LG bday? I know these people like soveniers from the crime scene as has been discussed here in length

Just pondered maybe if he knew beforehand he was going to have to confess but tried to wait until 18th, initially the first thing that came to mind was OMG he may have confessed on her bday ruining it with gory details,

just a thought, but I hate she's forever tied to this creep, then, almost owns her bday, as a sovenier

And let's not forget the 5 grandchildren that were adopted because their mother/father were in prison for crack cocaine use.

Right after the arrest Glenda M. gave that very weird interview to the Telegraph talking about the devil and then saying the 6 year old said he wanted to go to Macon to look for Lauren's body parts.

I do feel sorry for her, really, but is scary to think about how the 5 grandkids may turn out.

THey may not turn out good but I sincerely believe that just because you are raised with a naive mother, it doesn't make someone murder, dismember and possibly other things to a corpse

I feel sorry for her, in a different way than I feel for LG and her family and I'm sure I won't agree with her tactics of raising children I just think people that do this are born with it

I just read his 1 page confession.

What a 🤬🤬🤬. How absolutely infuriating. He is pure evil. Reading that page feels like deep injustice to me. He still controls what is known. He savors his victory as he sees it. He is a coward. Lauren's parents said it perfectly. He will never even come close to extinguishing her great light.

Despicable is one of many words that come to mind. I can't say the others without getting a timeout from Bessie.

Oh yeah. The brief, matter-of-fact details of him murdering her, leaving her, dismembering her and putting her remains in the garbage, leave one distinctly aware of what a cruel monster he really is. Absolutely deranged. There is so much more unsaid, that clearly it is the tip of the ice burg. Just how deep was his depravity and what else has he done?

  • #499
Sorry Bessie, it's how I feel.

That's too bad. Did you see the notice on the first forum page? Or the post in the "Breaking News" thread? I did the best that I could.

Last night I took time to organize and group the threads so they'd be together in one sub-forum, with re-directs for each one. Now to find the threads, one only has to enter "lauren giddings" in the main search box; or, click the "lauren giddings" tag at the bottom of any one of the lg threads. Either will result in a complete list.

bessie -- speaking just for myself (one day I will learn not to attempt to speak for others) this time: It's all good. By joining in the closet comparison, I only meant that I still feel a little lost when I drop into WS because Lauren's are still usually the first threads I check...and I knew "the way" so well. (Well, my "the way" -- because I think I navigate sort of bass-ackwards sometimes.)

Lauren is not in the Currently Awaiting Trial thread anymore, obviously, because there is not going to have to BE a trial. And that's a good thing.

IMO, you have done fine with this, and throughout the nearly-three-years of Lauren's case.
