*Sentencing Hearing (Day 1 of 3) (@ 9am ET) - GA – Mary Frances Crocker (14) & Elwyn John Crocker, Jr. (‘JR’) (14) (Mary died Oct. 18, 2018, Elwyn died about Nov. 30, 2016 & both discovered Dec. 20, 2018 buried in backyard, Guyton) – *Mark Anthony “Tony” Wright (31/now 37) (bro of Candice) arrested (1/8/19), charged (1/29/19), indicted (3/12/19) & arraigned (4/17/19) & re-arraigned (2/19/20) with malice murder & felony murder in Mary’s death, 1 count of sexual battery, 2 counts of cruelty to children, 2 counts of concealing a death (Mary & Elwyn) & 1 count of false imprisonment. No bond. DA will seek DP. [DP taken off on 8/29/25 with plea deal]. Effingham County
Wright is brother of Elwyn Sr.'s wife, Candice & overheard a family discussion about Mary's death & called an aunt, who tipped off authorities. Judge F. Gates Peed has also imposed a gag order prohibiting attorneys and investigators from discussing the case outside court.

*Candice Heather Crocker (33/now 39) (“step-mom”) - 10/21/20 Update: Plead guilty to 2 counts of malice murder, 2 counts of cruelty to child, to 2 counts of concealing a death & 2 counts of false imprisonment. Rest of the charges were Nolle Prosequi (dismissed). Sentenced to life without parole & credit for time served (12/20/18 to 10/21/20) to be served concurrently. In plea deal she must testify against the other 3 defendants.

First day of Mark Anthony "Tony" Wright's sentencing. Joann Groover (Kim Wright's sister) gave character testimony on behalf of her nephew. She brought some letters of support from fellow inmates, thanking Tony for introducing them to God's word. Then she mostly talked about what a likable, caring, hard-working bible scholar he is, and how patient and nurturing he's been over the years to an endless succession of behaviorally challenged cellmates (because the jail kept putting "problem" inmates in with him). She finished by stating for the defense that she would have no problem trusting him around children or letting him live with her, and that wasn't only her opinion, but the opinion of the 15 or so people she brought to support him (mostly church friends).

Cross examination was when it got interesting. She tried to talk about what a "level-headed" protector Tony was, and confidently stated that JR and Mary "idolized" him and thought he was a cool uncle. That's when the prosecution went down a long list of tortures the kids endured that were reported to police, asking if she was aware of each one. It was painful to watch because she was completely unprepared for it. She tried to say Tony was away from home, staying with relatives, and didn't know about any of it—but the prosecution has cell phone data and text messages placing him at home during the abuse. Then they showed the court two disturbing photos of Mary at death's door and asked how Tony could be a protector and "cool uncle" if he let this happen.

She just kept saying, "No. No. I was not aware." She even testified at one point that she "was not aware" that her nephew had pleaded guilty. I can't tell if she's delusional (she's Kim Wright's sister, after all) or she really didn't know. It seemed like she was really unprepared for what was happening, like she thought it was a probationary hearing, or some HR meeting where she was trying to keep a friend from being fired. When the prosecutor asked if knowing that Tony pleaded guilty to murder changed her opinion of him, she replied, "I know what I know, and I don't know what I do not know." (?!)

Then her husband got up and gave very brief, mostly useless testimony about what a dedicated Christian and man’s man Tony is, and how he memorized a lot of Bible passages. Oh, and that he thinks Tony is basically a martyr who's being framed and railroaded by our corrupt and unbalanced justice system.

To me, it seemed like Joann, her husband, and those "supporters" have all either been extremely under-informed, or in complete denial this whole time. I wouldn't be surprised if a large portion of those church friends they brought to support Tony jump ship after this.
