Identified! GA - Newton Co., Blk/BiracialFem, 12-17, in Yellow River, Mar'18 - Shanequa Sullivan

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. - Investigators are closer to identifying the body found in the Yellow River over the weekend after an autopsy Tuesday.

Officials said a fisherman found the body Saturday about a quarter mile south of Rocky Plains Road.

Tuesday, the body still had not been identified, but the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Lab said the body is that of a girl or young lady, possibly African American or bi-racial, between the ages of 12 and 17.

Investigators said there are no apparent identifying scars, marks or tattoos on the body.

The cause and manner of death are still undetermined.

Local outdoorsman Pat Campbell Jr. was fishing on the river about 4:45 p.m. Saturday when he discovered the body caught up in some bushes in the water.


Campbell said he had been downriver to the Ga. Highway 212 bridge and was on his way back when he spotted what he initially thought was a dog or deer in the water. On closer inspection, Campbell said he saw the victim’s foot and then recognized it as a human body. Campbell said it appeared the victim’s hands were missing.


Campbell said he called 911 at about 5 p.m. and then waited for authorities from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office to arrive, which took about 25 minutes because deputies had to walk through woods to reach the site.

Do you know if they have anyone reported missing in this area? Even though I am from Georgia I am not familiar with the Yellow River so this must be in the Northern part of Georgia.

I pray they can ID this young female. If the fisherman could ID her foot it seems maybe her hands may have been removed by the suspect trying to prevent identity. To me this means whoever killed her knew they could be linked back to her if her fingerprints could be forensically taken by the ME at the time of autopsy.

Thank God for all of the campers, hikers, hunters, and fishermen-women who find bodies of victims so that they can have the possibility of justice for what was done to them. So many victims would never have been discovered if it were not for those who go into places not often traveled by others.

They have been the unsung heroes in so many cases but my heart breaks for anyone who happens to come upon a human body even skeletal remains. My own hubby has mentioned it since he goes hunting each year in areas rarely gone into by others. He said he hopes, and prays he never stumbles upon human remains or a recently discarded dead body.

May this young woman or teen be identified and may justice be done.

My top choice of the above threads would be Janae Robinson as she is the closest geographically and the most recent (missing since Nov 2017). There's no specific location for where Janae was last seen, but Covington, GA city center is under 10 miles to the location this UID was found and the Yellow River runs as close as 4 miles from the town center.

Although, theoretically this teen could be from anywhere. HWY 20 runs over the Yellow River north of where this girl was found. Hwy 20 is a major trafficking route and the same HWY that Heidi Todd's abductor was found off of in Alabama after he drove through the Atlanta area with her.

Atlanta is known for having Sex trafficking issues. Unfortunately I feel this is the fate of a lot of missing teens in the area.

I live in Covington and drive past this river at least 3 times everyday. It twist and turns and goes under a lot of different road ways. Upriver from it there is a very popular access point off GA Hwy 212. There are always groups of people up there partying and fishing. I wouldn't doubt if she was dropped around there as this spot is not frequented during the colder months of the year.

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Family has confirmed that a body found floating along the Yellow River in early March has been identified as a woman who went missing from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport over a month before.

A family member said Atlanta Police Department contacted them to confirm that 23-year-old Shanequa Quanee Sullivan was the person found by a fisherman along the river.

Interesting to note LE's age estimate was off... 12-17 vs actually 23. Always trying to observe the differences for our work in other cases.
