Manhunt for accused cop killer outside Atlanta

SNELLVILLE, Ga. -- Authorities said they're continuing the search for the second of two teenage suspects in connection with the fatal weekend shooting of a police officer near a school northeast of Atlanta. Authorities said Sunday they believe 18-year-old Tafahree Maynard fatally shot Officer Antwan Toney a day earlier as he checked a report of a suspicious car parked near a school in the Snellville area, Gwinnett County Police said in a statement.

Maynard remained at large early Monday and should be considered armed and dangerous, police said.

He faces charges of aggravated assault and felony murder.

A second suspect, 19-year-old Isaiah Pretlow, was charged with aggravated assault for allegedly pointing a firearm at an officer during the pursuit after Toney's fatal shooting, police had said earlier.

A Gwinnett County officer killed in the line of duty Saturday has been identified as Officer Antwan Toney.

He had just turned 30 years old and was just 6 days from celebrating his 3rd anniversary with Gwinnett County police.

Ayers said Toney was loved and respected by the department

"The people that worked with him on a daily basis recalled a very jovial person who was dedicated to his job and dedicated to his community," Ayers said.

That respect was on display just hours after Toney died Saturday when dozens of officers accompanied the hearse carrying his body as it left Gwinnett Medical Center.

One suspect was in custody as of Saturday night. The second suspect is deceased as of this morning.

Channel 2 Gwinnett Bureau Chief Tony Thomas was the first to report that 18-year-old Tafahree Maynard was located Monday morning. Sources then confirmed to Thomas he is dead.

U.S. Marshals arrested the second suspect, 19-year-old Isaiah Pretlow, Saturday night and charged him with aggravated assault. He is being held without bond and will appear in court Monday at 1:30 p.m.

This happened less than a mile from my old house and about 6 miles from where I currently live. Saturday night was crazy. Police blocking off and shutting down neighborhoods all over the place. The shed he was found in was two houses down from my wife's coworker.

First line of duty death in a long time for Gwinnett. I think the whole community is pretty much in shock. O was young the last time we had an officer die. I vaguely remember it. A drunk driving incident. He had pulled over someone for a DUI and got hit but another drunk. Smh.

Feel horrible for Officer Toney's family, friends, and coworkers.
