GA - Pregnant teen Mia Campos, 16, found dead on side of road; boyfriend arrested - Jul. 17, 2024

Out on bond -- WTH?
Hasn't he been charged with murder?
SMH.

His attorney argued the accused has no criminal record, and the evidence is circumstantial so the court then lowered his bond! Never mind he was the last person to see Mia after luring her out of her parents house-- and then lied to police about it.

never mind that the accused is merely 17 and hasn't yet been around long to gain much in the way of a criminal record. his first charge is a doozy

Now months after a judge granted him bond, Monroy is now charged with statutory rape and child molestation.

“My soul is not the same. My mind is not the same,” Edward Campos said.

Applicable Georgia Laws for the new charges per the indictment:

Georgia Law

O.C.G.A. §16-6-5 states that a person commits the crime of enticing a child for indecent purposes when he or she solicits, entices, or takes any child under the age of 16 years to a place whatsoever for the purpose of child molestation or indecent acts.

Asportation is an element in enticing a child for indecent purposes. There must be some taking or moving the child towards somewhere that an indecent act would occur. The taking could be accomplished by using force, enticement, or persuasion.

Georgia Law on Child Molestation

O.C.G.A. § 16-6-4(a) states that a person commits the offense of child molestation when the person either:

  1. Does any immoral or indecent act to or in the presence of or with any child under the age of 16 years with the intent to arouse or satisfy the sexual desires of either the child or the person; or
  2. By means of an electronic device, transmits images of a person engaging in, inducing, or otherwise participating in any immoral or indecent act to a child under the age of 16 years with the intent to arouse or satisfy the sexual desires of either the child or the person

Georgia Law on Statutory Rape

The Georgia age of consent is 16 years old. In the United States, the age of consent is the minimum age at which an individual is considered legally old enough to consent to participation in sexual activity. Therefore, people age 16 or younger in Georgia are deemed legally unable to consent to sexual activity and having intercourse with someone underage may result in prosecution for statutory rape.

O.C.G.A. § 16-6-3 reads as follows:

A person commits the offense of statutory rape when he or she engages in sexual intercourse with any person under the age of 16 years, and that person is not his or her spouse.

Therefore, it does not matter if the individual under 16 consents to the sexual activity. Under Georgia law, those under 16 lack the legal capacity to consent.

ETA: We also learn in the YT that Mia's father wanted the DA to charge Monroy per the Indictment at the time of Mia's murder so the latest charges of Feb 2025 are not new or a surprise but could not come fast enough for her family.

SHE was a teen, as for the idiot boyfriend, he ruined all those lives because he couldn't be arsed to put on a condom. The sad fact is, he would not have had a motive to kill her otherwise. The motive was the baby. Even if her family raised it, he knew he'd still be on the hook for life. I know it sounds terrible and heartless, but usually this happens with very young people who do not want a baby and are driven to desperation and rage. It's tragic all around.

a teenage father who doesn't want a baby.

Respectfully, I was responding to 'a teenage father' quote by OP. And I agree -- It is tragic all around.

My bold. They really socked it to him. Under the jail for him, IMO.
If he goes to court and is found guilty, he should make very few buds in the slammer.
What a shame...

From the 4/2/25 quoted MSM:

On April 2, Monroy's defense attorneys filed a motion for bond again. According to a court order, a Gwinnett County judge granted Monroy a $150,000 bond for his new charges under similar conditions to the last time he was granted bond.

[..]

“We do not agree with the granting of bond in such cases as this, but we present the issues to the Court, and the Court, gives her ruling. We assure the family that the District Attorney’s Office will fight and achieve justice in this case," she stated.
