GUILTY GA - Riceboro, WhtFemale, discovered in woods of the Portal Hunting Club, homicide, 2 Dec 2022 - Mindi Mebane Kassotis *husband arrested*

-- NK's third wife was arrested a month later for Mindi's murder.
This information is incorrect. “NK’s third wife” was never a suspect nor arrested in relation to Mindi’s murder.

Kassotis married her illegitimately under the alias Nicholas Kilian James Stark. An annulment was granted shortly after his arrest in the summer of 2023.

I don’t think it was an illegitimate marriage, although he was certainly not upfront with everything to the new wife.

Wasn't he still married to Mindi when he married SK? Bigamy is illegal in all 50 states.

Technically, but he had already killed MK at that point.

Mindi was murdered in December 2022 and he married his third wife in April 2023.

I have heard that the name change from Kassotis to Stark was done legally, but I haven't seen any evidence of it. Either way, I do not believe his third wife knew of his prior identity.

news to me, too.

on a side note, two interesting things i heard briefly discussed on court tv

apparently mindi herself mentioned this jim mcintyre to others.

and, that a judge can't allow a third-party suspect on just someone's word, there has to be additional information provided regarding a third party suspect. assuming i understood correctly.

personally, i have no doubt nick convinced mindi of jim mcintyre. but, i'm really curious as to what evidence/information was provided to the judge to allow jim mcintyre to be considered.

anyone have thoughts

I think NK was extremely manipulative and probably did convince Mindi that this dude was after them. May have even used that as a way to separate her from her family (if you talk to your family, the bad people can find us!).

I can imagine this initially started as a way to run from his ex wife, but as time went on and he met SK, the idea of starting over across the country with a new wife and writing career became too appealing.

-- NK's first wife had just won a large divorce settlement.
-- NK and Mindi (2nd wife) were allegedly on the run to avoid paying the $1.5 million.

NK married his first wife in 2009 and then married MK in 2016. I'm not sure exactly when NK got divorced (or maybe he never did?) But why would the divorce settlement be an issue seven years into their marriage?

Also, until 2019 NK was a Lt. Cmdr in the Navy JAG Corps. They certainly don't make the kinds of money that a civilian lawyer would make. And, as far as I know, he didn't come from money. His dad was a small-town police chief. (Still living, I believe.) So, how did NK come to find himself on the hook for $1.5 million?

If the first wife testifies, then maybe some of this will become clear. But, it certainly is curious.

i wonder who is paying for weinstein's legal expertise... maybe nk's friends/family, if nk doesn't have the funds.

I missed that part. Was it DW who stated that?

it's in the court tv clip i linked. my link starts where vinnie is talking about the case. within a few seconds of intro by vinnie there are bullet points shown on the screen... the last bullet point states mindi and nick both mentioned mcintyre. also vinnie mentions it in discussion.

again, i can easily see nk convincing mindi of james mcintyre. but, it's the 3rd party culpability threshold they discussed in the clip that make me most curious.

Just watched it, thank you.

As I suspected, "defense (DW) says both Nicholas and Mindi told people about running from McIntyre".

Let's wait for those persons to say that in court... under oath.

Owner of the Airbnb says the house was extremely cleaned when K moved out.
A rug was missing from the area that "leads up to the backyard"... It was replaced by a new one.

Defense also asked if it was common for items to be damaged and replaced and he seemed surprised when she said it was not common at all.

NK looked fairly upset when the Ford recall information was effectively rebutted.

DW states that the Airbnb owner told investigators the front door lock was broken, but she doesn't recall saying that (and/or that the door lock was broken). DW moves on...

DAILY TRIAL UPDATES

DAY 3 – 8/7/25

DAY 2 – 8/6/25

  • VIDEO: GA v. Nicholas Kassotis – Day 2 | Dismembered Wife Murder Trial
  • The medical examiner who examined the body parts of Mindi Mebane Kassotis testified in excruciating detail the savage attack she suffered before being cut up and dumped in the woods where animals chewed away at what was left of her.
  • Dr. Keith Lamar Lehman testified that Mindi’s body parts were so drained of blood, that they could not recoup enough of it for toxicology tests. Her legs were cut from her torso across the femur bones, which would have severed the largest arteries and veins emptying the body of most of its blood content.
  • WATCH: Dismembered Wife Murder Trial: Day 2 Recap
  • Lehman also testified that Mindi suffered nine lacerations to her head including one wound that struck deep enough to cause a skull fracture. She also suffered cuts and bruising to her chest and abdomen. Bruises on her arms and the back of hands suggested she tried to defend herself against the onslaught of blows.
  • Lehman said a piece of her liver was sent for toxicology testing when normally blood from the heart would be used. Toxicology tests revealed a non-lethal concentration of Benadryl but the forensic toxicologist could not say what affect that concentration would have had on Mindi.
  • Lehman’s autopsy noted no trace of a fetus, even though her parents thought she was 8-months pregnant at the time and that she was due to give birth in January of the following year.
  • On cross the medical examiner agreed that Mindi’s head wounds would have produced copious amounts of blood – but a GBI agent previously testified that only a small amount of blood was found at the house. The defense suggested that blood found on the couple’s futon could have been menstrual blood and not blood from a head wound.
  • Lehman ruled Mindi’s death a homicide caused by traumatic injury.
  • GBI agent Lindsay Smith testified that identifying the remains of the victim was so challenging that it required the help of a forensic artist who created two drawings based on photographs of the severed head – which were released to the media in an appeal for help in identifying the victim.
  • When the sketches produced no results, investigators turned to a private genetic genealogy firm that linked the DNA from the body parts to Mindi’s mother, before Mindi Mebane Kassotis was identified as the murder victim.
  • Prosecutors displayed photos of what appeared to be the defendant’s car driving on the same road leading to the hunting club on November 29, a few days before Mindi’s remains were found. On cross-examination, the defense noted that the driver of the vehicle was not visible in any of the photos captured by surveillance cameras.
