GA - Starving boy, 10, 36 lbs, runs to neighbor and begs for food, Tyler and Krista Schindley arrested, Griffin, 2023

so frustrating when the coverage just stops and we never hear another word. I've half a mind to find some time this weekend to go and locate all the local news orgs that covered this case in the beginning, find the reporters who wrote the initial stories and email them all asking hey, what gives? what happened?

looks like defense tried to argue for change in venue because - Facebook.

Defense attorneys said in addition to media coverage, the community has been commenting on a Spalding County Facebook page about the case.

However, the State argues that not everyone has seen that page.

"There are hundreds of jurors that aren't even on Facebook. So we are guessing or anticipating what the jury is going to do, and that's just not what the law says that we should do," an attorney argued.

The judge said he would reserve a ruling on the matter, as they had not yet begun to pre-qualify jurors.
Court hearing held for Spalding County parents accused of starving 10-year-old son until he was 36 pounds

Editor's note: This story contains details about child abuse allegations that may be difficult to read.

Opening statements began Wednesday, with the state portraying the boy as an unwanted child, brought into the Schindleys’ home only because his adoption was tied to a pair of twins the couple wanted to adopt.

Prosecutors said the child was the "sacrificial lamb because they wanted the twins," adding that the 10-year-old "was the cost." Jurors heard testimony from multiple first responders who encountered the child the day he was found.

The children’s bedrooms were fully furnished and stocked with clothes and toys — except one.

The room allegedly used for the 10-year-old had a bare mattress on the floor, a puppy pad and no working light fixtures.

Prosecutors said the window in his bedroom room was covered with frosted film so he couldn’t see out, and it had been nailed shut. The light bulbs had been removed from the ceiling fixtures, and the door had scratches on the inside — with a lock installed on the outside.

"He had no access to hot water," the investigator added. “No way to turn lights on and off. No way to get out.”

As court wrapped up for the day, prosecutors introduced one final piece of evidence: a family photo tree found in the Schindley’s bedroom. All the children’s pictures were facing forward — except the 10-year-old's. His photo was turned backwards.

In court, the state said the child suffered injuries from the “soles of his feet to the top of his head.” He had 15 teeth removed due to severe dental neglect, and four crowns were placed. Prosecutors said Krista and Tyler Schindley withheld food, medical care and emotional support, locking him in a dark room with no working lights and directing other children in the home to mock and avoid him.
A couple's adopted 10-year-old son weighed 37 pounds when he was rescued. They just pleaded guilty to abusing him.

Prayers for this sweet boy today, that he is recovery physically, receiving love, support and compassion.

Judge is saying that he is bound by the 8th amendment to not impose a sentence that is cruel and unusual punishment.
His Honor is not happy.
So far, two twenty year sentences, consecutive, followed by twenty years probation, also consecutive.
It's a little hard to hear the livestream, so I hope I heard right.
BANISHED FROM GRIFFIN, GEORGIA AND SURROUNDING COUNTIES IN THE JUDICIAL CIRCUIT AND NO CONTACT WITH MINORS.
Edit due to more info
