After parking, he sat there. For 30 seconds... That's a long time.

A very long time. I wonder if he was texting.

I'm so confused! We know he was stuck in the car seat and couldn't get out of it! Whether he was secured properly according to the manual doesn't change the fact he was strapped in that car seat and could not get out! What is this argument about?

The child's shoulders were tightly secured but if the crotch strap wasn't, it added to the cruelty because the child's lower body and head thrashed about in his agony. It is compelling evidence that the father did not use the car seat for safety in case of a vehicle accident, he used it to murder his son.

Is it long enough to smother his infant with his hand?

IMHO:
It would be a "good start" but the total deed would take much longer and at that point, Cooper was a full fledged LIVELY toddler....a "moving target"!

Also....huge pathological/physiological indicators that smothering had taken place, had he done it successfully.

Sorry that is impossible. If the bottom was not latched there would be no pressure at all and the baby would have gotten out. It has to be fully buckled.

Whether he was secured right or not, the bottom line is his father left him in the car, and he died an unbearable death, probably screaming and calling for his mommy and daddy, and I can't even imagine what he was thinking. I wonder when Ross shut the door, he could hear Cooper screaming, or could he have told Cooper he had to get something and be right back?

Thirty seconds, making sure no one was looking his way, waiting for people to move past him, etc.?

30 seconds with his head six inches away from his sons head.

He was strapped in. If not he would have gotten out. He would have been fighting and got himself out or would not have been in the car seat when found dead with scratches. Those scratches are him hurting himself out of fear and frustration from being strapped in.

Thank you! I've been reading, catching up, and am at a loss that there is even a debate about this.

If Cooper was not strapped in, he'd been out of that car. At 22 months both my children could unlock a car (press a button, just like Fisher Price) and they could work the inside door handle too.

reaching past his child (to his right) to retrieve computer bag from passenger seat thus having a much greater opportonity to notice his child then what he claimed finally made him notice him - turning heard to right to check traffic and make lane change. Because to get that bag from seat would involve looking more downward MOO not across and through window and at mirror.

sexting or taking pictures of his member?

and yeah, probably scoping the area out, making sure no stragglers were left in the lot despite arriving late

Just to clarify terminology: ABRASION....removal of superficial layers of skin (excoriation of the epidermis), scraping away a portion of the surface.
Laceration.....injury involving a cut or break of the skin (frequently irregular edges)

When noting such damage to the body, MANY practitioners use the terms interchangeably.

I can see a variety of ways that damage could be done to this child's head both mechanical & by his own actions of utter despair (my editorial comment in bold)

Is anyone else's thanks button moved over to the right?

Waiting for the car to heat up and it get uncomfortable. Listening to the screams and thrashing of son trying to extract himself from the too tight shoulder straps.... Sexting one of the six women....If anyone had walked by, he simply could have started it up and driven off.

If you rub your skin hard enough, back and forth, for long enough on anything you are going to cause an open wound!

This just breaks my heart into pieces! That poor baby was probably desperately turning his head back and forth looking for his daddy to come and get him. He must have felt so alone and forgotten. I just can't fathom it... He is safe and protected now.

She's right, because the 5 point harnesses can't just be latched at the shoulders! They have to latched at the crotch to work at all! The chest clip only keeps the straps lined up correctly. It would be easy to slip out of them if the crotch latch was undone. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five-point_harness
