Marietta police report teen mom trying to bury dead newborn in backyard

Police have arrested the 17-year-old mother whose newborn was found dead over the weekend at a home in Marietta.

No one could have imagined what police say unfolded in a home on Gramling Street. Investigators say 17-year-old Leticia Rodriguez gave birth to a baby boy in her bed early Sunday morning.

17-year-old Marietta mother now charged with murder in death of newborn baby

Marietta Police announced the death investigation earlier this week.

A previous arrest warrant outlining the earlier charges indicated the mother admitted to police she had used a "sharp knife" to remove the umbilical cord from her newborn's neck after birth, "causing a large laceration" on the infant. The mom also allegedly admitted to using a pocketknife to "cut out the deceased infant's heart."

The latest warrant accused the teen of causing the death of the infant, which led to the felony murder charge.
