Police in Hapeville have arrested an Atlanta police officer accused of shooting a woman and burning her body.

On Aug. 22, a Hapeville city employee found the body of a woman on fire at the end of Elm Street. Police said the woman, Vernicia Woodard, 26, was shot multiple times and set on fire in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.

Officers arrested Tahreem Zeus Rana around 8:30 Thursday morning at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. They say he was headed to Monterey, Mexico, which may have been a stop on the way to India. Rana was on the no-fly list.

Hapeville police say Rana will be charged with murder, arson, and kidnapping.

Police believe Rana met Woodard on Craigslist. She leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter.

Rana was questioned Wednesday by police. Later in the day evidence at the scene and internet correspondence led them to consider him a suspect, but police couldn't find him. ... That's when they put him on the "no fly" list.

Glavosek told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Vernicia Woodard’s phone records led to APD Officer Tahreem Zeus Rana. Detectives then located Woodard’s posting on Backpage.com, a classified and hook-up website, where investigators believe the couple met, Glavosek said.

The fact that it was the 23-year-old Rana shocked officers, not only because he was a lawman but because some officers remember him as a kid growing up in Hapeville, Glavosek said...

The lead Hapeville detective on the case, Stephen Cushing, told Channel 2 Action News that investigating Rana was almost surreal because of the young man’s long ambition to become a cop. “I’ve been a police officer in the city of Hapeville for 15 years and actually saw this young man grow up and heard him say, ‘When I grow up, I want to be a police officer,” Cushing said.

Rana admitted he contacted Woodard on the advertisement website to hire her for sex, but decided not to go to the location because it was too far. “He stated that he had been using the site for about six to eight months; that he was commonly looking for a girl that was 'clean and cheap' was his statement,” said Hapeville Police Detective Jason Dyer...

Dyer testified that investigators found shell casings at the scene that matched casings found at his home. Surveillance at the motel where the victim lived also showed a car that matched Rana’s, police said.

This is just one example of someone who never should have been accepted on the force. It is scumbags like this that give LE a bad name.

What a disgrace to the uniform he was wearing and the public he was sworn to protect and serve. Hoping he finds someone "clean and cheap" in prison (they'll probably find him first) while either serving a LWOP sentence or sitting on DR.

A former Atlanta police officer was indicted Friday for murder.

Tahreem Zeus Rana, 23, faces 12 counts in the shooting death of Vernecia Woodard... Rana has been charged with murder, felony murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, concealing a death, tampering with evidence, violation of oath, pandering, and another weapons offense.
