Identified! GA - Whitfield Co., Skeletal Male in wilderness area, Jan'17 - Gary Fingerle

Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a call Sunday around 3 p.m. found the skeletal remains of a male. The discovery occurred in the wilderness area near Gordon Springs Road and LaFayette Highway in the western part of the county.

The remains had been there “at least a couple of months.”

This is the second deceased body found in the woods in Whitfield County in January. A 13-year-old boy found a burned body in the woods in the southern end of the county near the intersection of Interstate 75 and Carbondale Road. The investigation into that discovery is continuing and investigators made a trip out of state last week following leads and conducting interviews. No cause of death has been released from that autopsy at the state crime lab. The sheriff earlier said investigators were concentrating on a missing persons report from outside of the state.

I grew up in Whitfield county, still have family there.
Investigators seem to be concentrating on a missing person from another state in this case and in the case of the other body that was found recently. Are they connected?

A tentative identification has been made of the skeletal remains located Sunday in a wilderness area off Gordon Springs Road...

Investigators believe the remains may be those of Gary Wayne Fingerle, 59, of the Floyd County, Ga., area...

He was an avid hiker and his pick-up truck was found abandoned on Forestry Service Road 219 in Walker County in November.

Authorities in Floyd County recently discovered an abandoned pick up truck in nearby Walker County. That truck, belonging to 59-year-old Wayne Fingerle, an avid hiker, was found 3.5 miles from the remains.

Authorities do not suspect foul play in this case.

Update: A release from the Rome Police Department today confirmed that the skeletal remains found in Whitfield County have been identified as Gary Fingerle, a missing Floyd County man.
