I have searched to see if there are any threads following this trial and I couldn't find it, I apologise if this is a duplicate! The trial of Teresa black, accused of two counts of felony murder, two counts of child cruelty, aggravated assault and concealment of death, began yesterday and I intend on following it closely.
Here is some background information on the case (worded by me, using information from sources linked below)

In 1999, the remains of a small child were found in a wooded area near a cemetery. The body was believed to be 3-6 months into decomposition and was found with belongings to indicate he had been cared for, wearing weather-appropriate clothes and brown timberland boots. At the time, his cause of death was not determined. The identity of the boy remained unknown for more than two decades until a tip came in. A woman, claiming to know Teresa Black and her son William in 1998, recognised an updated artist rending posted by NCMEC, National Center for Missing % Exploited Children. Investigators used DNA from Teresa Black and linked it to the missing boy. Now identified as William Deshawn Hamilton.

The woman who helped break the case, Ava, says she was very close with Teresa and William when they lived in North Carolina. She often cared for William and described him as loving books, dancing and being adventurous. She explained that Teresa left with William in 1999 but when she returned, William was not with her. Ava was suspicious of Teresa's changing stories about where exactly he was.

In 2022, a DeKalb County Grand Jury returned an indictment against William's mother, Teresa, in connection with his murder. Teresa Black is accused of causing her son's death by giving him a substance or substances containing Diphenhydramine and Acetaminophen. Traces of this was found in his muscle tissue. She is also accused of hitting him in the head with an unknown object. Teresa Black never reported him missing.

Georgia woman Teresa Black heads to trial on charges including two counts of felony murder, two counts of cruelty to children, aggravated assault, and concealing the death of another. The case remained cold for 23 years, until facial reconstruction aided in the identification of 6-year-old William Dashawn Hamilton.

I've been watching it live, here are a few little updates.

The opening statement by the prosecution told jurors the evidence would prove Teresa neglected and abused her son and that she gave him a fatal dose of medication that caused his death, soon after they moved to Atlanta in December 1998. It was also mentioned how friends and family members gave gifts to Teresa for William but she would lock them away in a cupboard. Also a few instances of people witnessing Teresa seemingly go to attack William and behaving in such a way that made others feel uncomfortable.

The defence told jurors that Teresa has lived with regret for abandoning her son's body and lying about his whereabouts but that she loved him and did not harm him. The defence stated that they fell into a cycle of homelessness once moving to Atlanta so the pair of them were sleeping rough days before William died.

Ava, the lady who called in the tip which broke the case is the first witness called by the prosecution. Ava and Teresa, the accused, were friends in North Carolina in the late 90's.

These are just notes I've taken from watching Ava on the stand. When asked about how Teresa was with William, she said she was very detached and did not speak nicely to him. She would not allow him to play with other kids or play outside. Ava says she witnessed Teresa be physical with William twice. The first incident was over something Teresa had cooked for William, he didn't want to eat it so she shoved him in his chest. On the second occasion, William was asking to go outside as it was a nice day and Teresa refused and punched him in the chest.

The prosecution has started asking Ava about when Teresa said she was going to move. Ava stated that out of the blue one day Teresa said she was moving to Atlanta. They had a conversation about it and Ava remembers that Teresa only knew one person from there, a man she had known for a year. Apart from that no known connections to the area and she does not recall whether it was a romantic relationship between Teresa and that man. She does not believe it was.

The nature of Ava's and Teresa's friendship has been discussed. Ava said she would see Teresa and William every day, sometimes before work in the morning or the afternoon. They worked together. Ava said their friendship was considered to be that of best friends.

The prosecution is now asking Ava about the day when Teresa left for Atlanta. Ava is emotional recalling the last time she saw William. He said he would never forget her. Ava says that Teresa was saying that she had a plan, she was going to stay in Atlanta with family and that she had a job lined up already. Ava questioned her as it still seemed to her quite out of the blue and she did not fully believe Teresa's story. Teresa gave Ava the keys to her home and said she could "keep it". Ava kept hold of the keys believing they would return shortly. The rent on Teresa's home was paid up to four months in advance from when she moved to Atlanta. The home was also left as if still lived in, with furniture and a lot of belongings left behind. Ava describes what was left behind as " a whole house".

More on the last time Ava saw William, she describes what he was wearing which sounds eerily similar to what he was wearing when he died. She provides further information on Teresa's story of moving to Atlanta. Teresa stated that she would be living with William's biological father's parents and that they had a job for her to start. She did not specify to Ava what job it was exactly.

Ava says before Teresa left she questioned her. She asked if everything was okay, and if she was struggling with William and even offered to take care of William for her so she could have a break. She offered to take care of him until Teresa was more settled. Teresa denied any issues and said "No I wouldn't give you my baby".

According to Ava, when Teresa left she reached out a week later by a telephone call. It sounded like she was in a phone booth and she seemed to be under the influence. Ava was concerned for William and asked where he was. Teresa replied that he was with friends of hers to which Ava said you don't have any friends there. Ava was very concerned by this and told her to go get William and return home.

To clarify, Teresa left with William June 1998, she returned without him late December 1998. William's body was discovered in February 1999.

When Teresa returned without William, Ava asked where he was and Teresa changed her story a few times. According to Ava it seemed like Teresa did not want to say where he was. After this Teresa was avoiding Ava. Months later in the summer, Ava bumped into Teresa in a store and confronted her again on where William was. Ava remembers asking if Teresa hurt him and Teresa exclaimed "do you think I killed him?"

Quite an important note
At some point after this, Ava saw William's Father. Teresa claimed she moved to Atlanta with William to stay with William's father's parents. Ava asked him about William, he responded that he was not staying with them. Ava reported her concerns to the police, who attended her residence. She requested that they force Teresa to tell them where William was. They responded that their hands were tied and had no probable cause to work on. Ava then called every hospital in South Carolina, she was very concerned and did not know what else to do.

The defence questions Ava
A little reminder; Ava knew Teresa Black and William back in 1995-1998. Ava is the lady who recognised an updated artist rending posted by NCMEC in 2020, which broke the case open after two decades.

The defense has asked whether Ava ever reported Teresa for neglect/abuse in 1998 when they were friends before Teresa moved away. Ava said she did not. The defence has brought up the two incidents in which Ava said she witnessed Teresa being violent towards William. When asked again how often Ava spent time with Teresa and William, she reiterated it was every day. The defence changes the subject after saying "every day together but just two incidents".

Next witness up, the state calls Miles Boyce.
Miles was a friend of Teresa's, meeting sometime between 1997-1998. Miles met William when he was 5/6 years old and described him as often looking dirty. He recalls the last time he saw both Teresa and William together when he dropped them off at a bus station. When asked if he could remember what William was wearing that day, Miles states he remembers him wearing Timbaland boots. Teresa told Miles that William's Grandmother lived in Atlanta. Miles recalls Teresa only having one bag of luggage, William did not have a bag with him.

The prosecution asks Miles whether he saw William again after the day he dropped them off at the bus station, he said he did not. When asked about whether he saw Teresa again, he said yes but can't recall when. Miles stated that she did not mention William to him.

The defense askes Miles if he ever saw Teresa be abusive towards William and he said no. No further questions.

Next witness up, the state calls Martha Dial.
Martha worked at Pleasers where Teresa worked as an exotic dancer in the late 90s. It is worth noting that Pleasers is just over 12 miles away from where William's body was found.

Martha is asked a few questions on the clubs regulations and the process of how they employ dancers. The prosecution ask her questions on the name Teresa used, Martha confirms it was "Baby something" but can't recall the second part as many of the dancers went by "Baby".

Under cross-examination by the defense, Martha is questioned on whether she knew much about Teresa. Due to her not remembering her name and the amount of exotic dancers working there at the time. Martha agrees that she knew little of her. The defense throws into question whether Teresa worked there at all and asked if she has any documentation to prove so, Martha says she does not.

Next witness up, the state calls Thomas Gasque, a former DeKalb Police Officer.
In February 1999, Thomas Gasque was the first responding officer to a call of a body found in the woods. He confirms that he was flagged down by two individuals when he arrived at the scene who were working at the time at the Cemetery nearby. One of the individuals stated to Thomas that he went to relieve himself and that's when he noticed the body.

Photos of the scene are shown
Thomas appears emotional during his time on the stand recalling the experience and also when these photographs are shown. It is worth noting that when these photographs are shown, Teresa appears to show no emotion.
