George's Gun: Who notified the police?

If it helps any in narrowing down a search, I've gotten most of my information about this case here on WS. I started reading here approximately 1 month prior to joining. The story that has "stuck" with me regarding where/how LE was notified is that GA ordered the gun over the internet (LE might have been tipped off when going through computer records). The gun had to be shipped to a local dealer, where GA had to retrieve it. Something about licensing/permits I believe is why it couldn't be shipped directly to the A home.

Now, I cannot tell you WHY this particular story has stuck with me as the correct one, but I can tell you that I am not usually persuaded without links/sources. So....if someone wants to narrow their search for the source of the story by confining it to one month prior to my join date and a post on WS, I imagine there should be something there in the way of links!

All this, of course is JMO....I regret no links to share with you at this time but will try to keep searching!

Has anybody looked at LA's transcripts from the morgan deposition? Maybe something was mentioned there. His was the first transcript of anything related to the case that I read.

I began keeping my own personal timeline on this case. That is, until about the end of March, which is where it ends.
In any case, these are a couple of the notes I have about the gun:
FRIDAY AUGUST 29
— OCSD learns later that George Anthony purchased a Taurus .38 revolver along with a box of ammunition from a local gun store on this day. The firearm was picked up on September 4th.
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 5
— OCSD learns of George's gun purchase on August 29th. George picked up the gun on September 4th. Deputies and home confinement people picked up the gun in the early morning hours of September 6th. According to Richard Grund, he is the one that notified Casey's home confinement officer Don Bjoring about the purchase.

There is no link for this info. But, the dates will help anyone interested to google.

This is a very good narrowing down. Thanks!

I'm making no sense today. I don't think LE knew about the gun because of the tap. LE received a tip about the gun.

But the FACT that LE put a device on the A's phone is documented as per yesterday's release. Prior to that, it was speculation. So now we know. What is not revealed in the docs, is what LE, if anything, found out through doing that.
Oh...and this is something I'm licking my chops about. I do think, though, that JB provided the whole family with throwaway phones...but also remember LE walking out with some phones after Caylee was found. Wonder if they'll ever establish for us whether or not they were "real" phones.

GA didn't have Conway for counsel in Aug 08. The quote you referred to was when Conway reported GA missing to 911 due to suicidal tendencies. This about the gun that was reported from a tip to be in the wheel well. Do we still have the vid of female officer looking in GA' car that night as I remember being glued to it and we all chewed that moment up. I don't remember anyone stating who the tip came from. My theory was it was the gun shop owner who had gA fill out gun registration and permiit to carry it.

My understanding is that one is not required to register a gun in FL. This is what I was told by the department that issues concealed carry permits when asking where to find a database for something I was working on a few years ago. However, if one has a concealed carry permit, that's another story.

I read the Velez-Mitchell quote differently than did you. BC made the call when GA disappeared and they allegedly feared suicide. BC made reference to a gun that had been confiscated in the past. I think we'd have heard of another post case inception gun confiscation. I also believe that if there was a long ago confiscation, prior to case inception, it wouldn't make sense to speak of that one and not the more recent wheel well gun. Make sense? Or am I getting something wrong? Then again, I'm not sure what a confiscated gun had to do with anything going on that night, anyway. :)

Agree!

But, IMHO. requests for links should be applied more uniformly.

Unless modified by "IMHO."

I like that; if someone qualifies their remark with "IIRC" or such, I don't think they're stating something as fact that they have a link to support. On the other hand, I think it's better to try to post the supporting documentation or link when stating something as fact without making others ask, as many, if not most posters do automatically most of the time.

Perhaps GA was licenced to have a gun after all he was LE.
But I am glad it was confiscated by the police, because GA does not seem to be rational anymore.
I believe it was Lee who told them. but I do not really care who told .
I am glad it was taken.
:twocents:

If he had a concealed carry permit it would have to be work related. There has to be a reason for the permit; they're not just handed out on request. Again, going from a personal experience and telephone call to the department that issues same.

Is it possible LE reported (back in Sept 2008) that they were acting on a tip, since they didn't want to reveal at the time that they discovered the presence of the gun via wiretapping?

ETA: Sorry for beating a dead horse. Hope we all find out the truth some day.

Excellent theory! Sounds very, very plausible to me.

How did RJ know about the gun purchase? (maybe he knows the gun shop owner?)

If LE knew on Aug. 29 why wait until Sept 6 (wee hours) to pick it up or deal with the issue? That means GA had the gun for a day and a half.
Who knows what could have happened under the circumstances. Weird.

I can see how this might be a little confusing. In the context of my own timeline, however, it makes perfect sense. Let me try to clarify.

FRIDAY AUGUST 29
- George purchased a Taurus .38 revolver along with a box of ammunition from a local gun store. The gun itself was not picked up on this day.
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 4
- George picks up the gun.
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 5
- OCSD learns for the first time today of George's gun purchase and that he has picked it up and possibly has it at the home.
Deputies and home confinement people picked up the gun from George's car in the early morning hours of September 6th.

Hope this helps.

That makes sense. The other post somehow made it sound as if OSCO knew about the gun earlier (but I'm tired). Still, how did RG know about the gun I wonder?

Please post the link to this document.

I wish I could Patty G...I've searched and searched for it but can't find it. I found the doc by searching the text but the link is for another site which brings up the doc. I'm looking through our doc links here at ws to find it so I don't have to post a link from another site. I'll post it as soon as I find it.

So, the gun dealer may be advised by LE who is temporarily not allowed to have a gun.

In addition to the criminal records reports that they usually get, I mean.

Thank you.

The statement can be found on Page 45 at the link provided by "momtective"
http://blogs.discovery.com/criminal_report/files/01.pdf

On September 5th, I learned that George Anthony had purchased a Taurus .38revolver along with a box of ammunition from a local gun store.

The firearm was ordered on August 29th and picked up on September 4th of this year.

Condition #15 of Casey's Conditions of the Home Confinement Program state as follows:15) I will not possess or have in my residence or in my vehicle any deadlyweapons. (Examples: Firearms, martial arts weapons, or explosives)I notified Casey's home confinement officer Don Bjoring about this purchase.

Later that evening, Don Bjoring, Meg LIughes, and Garnett Ahern conducted a home visitat the 4937 Hopespring Drive address. They were accompanied by uniformed Deputies attheir request.

The Taurus .38 caliber revolver was recovered from within the house. Theweapon was held for safekeeping upon the request from the home confinement officers. As a note, Casey's home confinement was not violated based on this incident
.

IMO, based on how this statement is written, it is not clear that is was Rev. Grund that told LE. It appears to be the investigators report of the happenings on September 5, 2008 and not associated with the portion above regarding Rev. Grund's September 5, 2008 interview.

Thanks for keeping us straight ~ I agree with your interpretation, Patti G. But don't understand "The Taurus .38 caliber revolver was recovered from within the house" statement. I was under the impression it was thought to have been recovered from the wheel well of Georges auto. . . If not, I wonder what they got out of his trunk that night.
