''The trial of a man accused of murdering six people and injuring hundreds of others at a German Christmas market has begun.

The suspect, named Taleb A in line with German privacy laws, is accused of driving a car through crowds at Magdeburg Christmas market on 20 December 2024.

Prosecutors say the attack that lasted just over a minute left five women aged between 45 and 75 years old and a nine-year-old boy dead.

During the rampage, which began at 7.02pm, the rented BMW reached speeds of up to 29mph (48kph) as it crashed into people enjoying the festivities on the final Friday before Christmas.

The Saudi doctor is accused of murdering six people and attempting to murder a further 338. He's also charged with injuring 309 people.'

That is one of the saddest things I have ever read. I have always wanted to go to Christmas in Germany to see the markets. And now they could be a thing of the past because of ...... what?

I have always wanted to go to Christmas in Germany to see the markets.

To be honest, they're getting more and more 'uniform', same-old, same-old. There may be exceptions, but it's the trend. Of course, if you've never been to one before, then there's a big draw obviously. I don't think they'll all be cancelled though. There will be towns and cities who manage to solve the dispute on 'who should pay' for the growing costs. 'Who should pay' is always a big topic in German politics, back-and-forth between municipalities and Länder and federal level or as in this case between municipality and Xmas Market organisers. MOO.

Things change, people pull through, find other ways. (I think it's sadder that children apparently don't go trick-or-treating so much anymore in North America, but go trunk-or-treating). There are for instance indoor Christmas craft markets in Germany. And throughout the year there are lots and lots of festivals outdoors. Municipalities end up subsidising lots of outdoor festivals, in some form or other, including Christmas Markets.

Oktoberfest will be next to go.

I think outdoor Carnival especially the parades might be next to go because they are a lot harder to contain and/or completely fence off than Oktoberfest.
