Lexx, I was thinking as a former political figure, Haase is likely to be confident and possibly be multilingual? Familiar with travelling abroad? Even if he is not highly educated. I seem to remember there was some information that a business Haase worked for is based in Ireland, although I don't think that was confirmed. Maria will have studied english too; maybe french as well.

Being a politician must give him confidence, social skills and even a network of people to help him. He must know the system and he's gotta have some understanding to get to that position. He must be very convincing in discussion and he should be able to arrange things better than most of us. At least my common sense tells me this.
Politician might also be in an optimal place to some favors like getting forged IDs? He knew he was going on the dark side so getting the IDs / arranging other stuff would not make a difference anymore. What kind of political party was he in? Some parties might have people with different priorities and higher loyality.
So anyway, I can understand why Haase might have the confidence to have taken Maria away to another country. But I just cannot think what his plan is for the future. Where he thinks they will live, how he will work and what Maria will do?

If I would have to dissappear the first thing I would try to do is to get new IDs, go 2000km away and board a plane to never-never-land. I don't know if ID's are possible to have like that but I would surely try.
Bernhard Haase has no future in his old life anymore but he is an experienced man and he must have planned this somehow. I cannot see any other way than to go far away with possible new identity and new life, set up a coffee shop and live on. I just cannot see him being so stupid and do this without any planning unless he was ready to commit suicide.
This kind of man doing this kind of act, giving up his life, work, wife, reputation, becoming a fugitive, possibly a sex criminal. That is really hard to explain with other than blind passion and extreme boredom of his current life. And maybe even pleas from Maria to run away? Still it sounds like a nightmare.
Or maybe he's just super bored of his life, work, wife, everything and wanted this last moment of passion not caring about what happens next? But now after the biggest flame has burned out he has started to plan desperately driving somewhere in southern EU trying to find a way to hide and thinking what to do when money runs out.
If only we could know of his and her life more. That would clear up many things.
